That’s actually pretty interesting. I always assumed that the quality of the athletes was just improving over time, and that was the reason why passing and receiving records are broken so often these days. Apparently it’s just the ball. Crazy!
The first ever American football is the ball used in the Princeton vs Rutgers game in 1869, more than 70 years before the 1940s ball shown in the video. The ball in the video isn’t even the first NFL ball as the ball changed shape and size in 1932 and the first NFL season was in 1920. Also, the “old” ball in this video is worn and weathered. A new ball in 1940 used for a game wouldn’t have been like that.
Basically, Sammy Baugh is the greatest NFL player of all time. Guy was the greatest QB AND punter of his time with this horrendous ball. 187TD's passing And AVERAGING 45 yards per punt. With a then NFL record of an 85 yard punt. He also a top DB of his era, as well.
The old footballs are what made the passing yards and gameplay that much more impressive, looking back imo. Doesn’t mean it was optimal however. Interesting. I’d have to see it tested more to form a full opinion.
did they even pass it back then? You know i always wondered what it would be like if both the NFL and the NBA had variations where they played with the old rules.
@@jmgonzales7701 I wish they had a seperate league for that too. But I have a feeling unless it was majority or all old rules that aren’t used/have* been replaced, people will think it’s “redundant” or not worth it. I do like seeing the XFL’s rule differences though.
Of course that’s going to happen when an 80 year old ball’s leather deteriorates and the bladder is,pretty much, gone. Same thing will happen to that NFL ball in 80 years unless it’s kept in pristine condition.

Rip Mr kapp
The fact that the ball is made of organic material and 80 years old may have altered its performance a bit as well.
It was probably a lot closer to the duke on day 1

The first few footballs actually were closer to a rugby ball for obvious reasons lol.
Plus in the old days the field was often a quagmire.
“Clearly more designed for passing” literally the same thing just a little heavier
Footballs go back like 80-100 years before the date you gave that one

The ball hasn’t been mudded.
You can just imagine back then when good QBs would throw like 50 yards. Them guys back then was GOATED

The old school ball was just a ball to play with. The new one is designed for aerodynamics and such.
