Whenever I see this version of Robin, I link him more with the Cary Elwes version from 'Men In Tights'. " . . because, unlike other Robin Hoods, I can speak with an English accent!"
Apparently this is not a favourite amongst the majority of fans, but I personally find this one a hoot. In the original version, the Sherif was indeed revealed to be a robot, but that scene was removed just before broadcast, as it involved Robin cutting off the Sherif’s head. However, as a police office had just been beheaded in a terrorist attack, the BBC decided to remove the scene, due to respect and taste concerns.
I love this episode. The Doctor and Robin's interactions are hilarious. The ending part about stories and their power to inspire others is just wonderful.
Fun episode, good reaction. "I am The Doctor and this is my spoon" is one of the best lines ever. Peter Capaldi is the same age as me so the age references either make me laugh or think "hey, there's still a chance". Isn't Clara's outfit a thing of wonder? The next episode is. Something else.
I remember reviews at the time said that this felt more like a Matt Smith era story, but I don't think it would've worked nearly as well with him, since he's a lot more whimsical and would probably throw himself into the action and shenanigans. Capaldi's more grumpy demeanour and general tendency to act like he's above this nonsense is what makes it this so much fun to watch
I agree - the "Grumpy doctor" is perfect for this, watching Robin Hood get under his skin and tease him, is solid gold comedy. And they cast the right actor to play Robin Hoood.
I see plenty of people like me who really enjoyed this episode but feel guilty about it. Funny that, isn’t it? We may have been swayed by a vocal minority! Anyway, I still really like it. It’s a romp and 12 gets to be really grumpy. What’s not to like - ha ha! Ben Miller who plays the sheriff is/was comedy partners with Alexander Armstrong, who played Madge Arwell’s bomber pilot husband in ‘....the Wardobe’ Christmas special. The sketches where they play English WWll fighter pilots are gold. He was also the first eccentric English detective posted to the Caribbean in ‘Death In Paradise’.
In the original script/cut, the sheriff is a robot too (hence singular “robot of sherwood”) and gets beheaded before he falls into the gold. This was changed last minute because of the news of British hostages being beheaded by Isis just before.
Couple of notes here - originally the Sheriff was beheaded and revealed to also be a robot (the actual robot of the title) but this was edited prior to broadcast due to the Islamic State beheadings going on at the time. One of the Robin Hood images was Patrick Troughton's (2nd Doctor) 1952 TV appearance.
Steven Moffatt said that he wanted the Twelfth Doctor to be a bit less "user friendly" than the Tennant or Smith incarnations. This wasn't without precedent, as Doctors One and Six could both be bad tempered. Personally, I get a big kick out of his snarkiness. In this particular episode, I've always felt that his attitude is a combination of his being certain that Robin is a fake and being impatient to get to "the truth" and jealousy of Clara's fan-girling over Robin. A fun episode overall.
Can't stand this episode, but the darker and grumpier Twelfth Doctor really works well for me. It does harken back to the classic Docs. I just find it a shame that they diluted it so much after his first series and made him almost another Smith/Tennant. I don't think Capaldi was served very well by the show, certainly not used to his full extent.
Mark 1:04. Hi! The last time that I checked, there were two books; one titled "The Encyclopedia of Superheroes", which I bought as soon as I saw it for sale on a shelf in a store, and the sequel, "The Encyclopedia of Supervillains", which I know of, because it was advertised in the back of the first one. I have yet to ever see one to buy it. Both include mere heroes and villains too, by the way, and explains the differences. Also, as much of a misnomer as it is, their female counterparts are included. My point is, I thought it may interest you to know, that "Doctor Who", is listed with his own entry as a, "Superhero"! 😎👍 Side note! "The Encyclopedia of Science-Fiction", also refers to him by the name, "Doctor Who"! 😎👍
I really like the reversal here to the norm. By that I mean here the doctor is the audience, pointing out the stupidity of everything. He feels like he's walked into a story that isn't real. Whereas the companion is completely part of the silliness here and irs the companion who reminds the doctor not to stop believing in stories. This reversal helps the audience warm to 12 as we sympathise with him.
Mark 22:01. So, you mentioned the, Kevin Costner movie, "Prince of Thieves", but have you seen the Keira Knightley movie, "Princess of Thieves", made by, "Disney"? 🤔 What two roles do actors, Sean Connery & Patrick Stewart, have in common? They each have played a version of, "Robin Hood", and, "King Richard"! 😎👍
In the aired episode, the Sherif's lines "Half man, half engine. Never ageing, never tiring" don't really make sense since they cut the revelation that he was part robot! ruclips.net/video/AXe7cFqg-1k/видео.html has the original version of the final sword fight, including the Sherif's temporary beheading that some others have mentioned in comments.
I don't like this episode exactly, but I love love looooove the Doctor's constant bickering with Robin Hood. It's mainly the reason I never skip this episode. It's just too funny to miss! Also, I love the Doctor's outfit in this. I wish they kept it in his future series.
Ben Miller(Sheriff of Nottingham) is/was the comedy partner of Alexander Armstrong who played the “lost” pilot husband in The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe episode... so now you can sleep at night! 😄
I loved this episode. I know many did not but it was great fun. Robin was like the doctor in many incarnations. Post trenzalore he was grim. And he saw his past self in Robin and thus didn’t like him
Good idea to rewatch the Disney Robin Hood! If you haven't watched it, you could react on the side to the Mel Brooks parody Robin Hood Men in Tights I think you'd have a blast!
You should try to look at Capaldi as a scarred veteran, He's lived for over two thousand years. He's loss alot and it's made him fearful of happiness/connections because he always gets hurt just when he finds it. I feel like his journey right now is to slowly rediscover the importance of happiness and kindness.. He has seen too many wars & battles, loss too many friends and people he cares about. Eventually that gets to you and you can no longer play the fun guy anymore. Why do you think he asks Clara last episode "Am I a good man".. he genuinely doesn't know anymore. He's loss so much and he feels responsible for it all... He's the Doctor. It's in his name, he just wants to help people. And when he can't it eats away at him. So now he's scared to help or care because if he does he might fail and lose someone else... We know it's not his fault, but he's spent too many years trying to be a good man, and now he's starting to wonder if all that time he was the reason for all the pain and loss. That maybe he's the bad guy... So we have to be here for him now, because he's trying. He wants to be a good man. He's just scared. ❤️
Watching your reaction helped soften my harsh feelings towards this episode. Granted that watching Doctor Who you have to accept a lot of the "science" they invent for the show. But shooting a golden arrow into a spaceship to give it a power boost??? I did and do enjoy Peters Doctor. When you think about it how many hundreds of years did the doctor spend on Trensalore? Living as long as he has at this point, so much has got to be "Been there, done that" So no bother with pleasantries. Let me figure out whatever your problem is, back in my box and off to the next one. The companion is us going wait, what??? ^These are people with feelings and not just puzzles for you to solve.
Hi FWR, if you have the chance you should watch the 1938 film (The Adventures of Robin Hood) with Errol Flynn, it`s a really good adventure romp. The first I knew of Robin Hood was growing up in the 1960`s. They repurposed a 1950`s evening drama series for Adults, into a teatime viewing for kids, it was (The Adventures of Robin Hood) starring Richard Greene. Big problem with the last few series is making the companions look good at the cost of making the Doctor stupid by not having him think of it first. It worked with the early companions because everyone up to Clara had an insight into human relationships which the Doctor was lacking in, but Clara is both a terrible person and way too important in the universe when it's revealed she fixed up all the Doctor's mistakes over his whole lifetime. It culminates IMHO in the Day of the Doctor anniversary special where three Doctor's together have exhausted their brains to the point that they are resigned to wipe out their entire species, until Clara says "no, you're better than this" and then they go "oh yeah, let's think of something else". It's a huge undermining of the Doctor that three of him together were dumber than Clara, who didn't even actually do anything, to the point that they were going to commit genocide.
I laugh a lot too, though. Ah-ha-haaa!
NEXT EPISODE IS MY FAVORITE (for the 12th doctor)
Somone should make fourthwall laugh compilation 🤣🤣🤣🤣
@@TheEleventhDoctor That would be a very long video!

I always thought, the longer his hair got the more I loved him, he took a second to grow on me!
I think Robots of Sherwood is underrated. It's fun.
Especially that ending
This is a favourite of mine. I do love a very grumpy doctor. Great reaction and review.
I love this episode. The Doctor and Robin's interactions are hilarious. The ending part about stories and their power to inspire others is just wonderful.

One of the Robin Hood's on the computer screen was Pat Troughton (2nd Doctor) who played Robin Hood on the BBC once long ago.
One of my fave Who easter eggs ever. :)
In the original script/cut, the sheriff is a robot too (hence singular “robot of sherwood”) and gets beheaded before he falls into the gold. This was changed last minute because of the news of British hostages being beheaded by Isis just before.
Its a shame they didn't but that back in later because it completely fits and makes sense in context.
That "I'm not a hero" conversation at the end is one of my favorite parts of Capaldi's time as The Doctor.
I still love that final conversation with Twelve and Robin. Both men are indeed legends in their own ways that are forever immortalized
The dress that launched a thousand cosplays...
Couple of notes here - originally the Sheriff was beheaded and revealed to also be a robot (the actual robot of the title) but this was edited prior to broadcast due to the Islamic State beheadings going on at the time. I really adore this episode. After seeing it, I fell in love with the Twelfth Doctor 🤷😍😁
love it when Dr Who does comedy
Because I am the Doctor: and THIS IS MY SPOON 😂
The spoon is by far the most Doctor thing Capaldi does in these first few episodes 🤣
Mark 2:38. Hmm. Why didn't she say, "Doctor! Stop trying to spoon my, Robin Hood! I want to do that!"? 🤔😂😅

Loved him in "Primeval "
He's so cute when he's cranky.
for further robin hood silliness, i highly recommend mel brooks' robin hood men in tights
"Aha . . . right rope!"
This is just a fun episode!!!
I loved this episode. I know many did not but it was great fun. Robin was like the doctor in many incarnations. Post trenzalore he was grim. And he saw his past self in Robin and thus didn’t like him

Christopher Eccleston doctor would have perfect temperament for this episode show off sardonic side just like all British pantomime heroes

Best Robin Hood is the series, "Robin of Sherwood"
