I hope Genesis soundfonts become the new trend. I like the sound of the Genesis a lot. Grew up with it. It's got such a funk to it. Much better than how every song was made 8-bit. And the Super Mario 64 soundfonts, they're fine, but I think the Genesis has more versatility for interesting sound remixes

Sega Megadrive has always sounded beefier than the super Nintendo, just compare the "Jungle Strike" theme! It's like night n day. It do be like this: SNES: let me play a cool upbeat synth stealth theme for u. Megadrive: let me obliterate your ears with this radical heavy metal theme that suits all your Apache killing needs! Oh I made this awesome guitar solo for the theme song too!
This is fun and I enjoy it, but as an explainer for those who don't know or anyone curious, this is absolutely not even close to what it would sound like on real hardware. This video was created using MIDI files and a "SoundFont" that contains sounds sampled from a real Mega Drive system. It's actually much more similar to the way music works on the Super NES, although the sound samples would likely be quite different and definitely lower-quality (the GenesiSF is like 65*MB*; the SNES has 64*KB* of audio RAM). Audio on the Sega Genesis was produced in quite a different way. Instead of having a track with a bunch of events that say "play x sample at y pitch and z volume here" - the way MIDI works - you actually had to program a sequence of noises to the FM synthesis hardware, which was generating the sounds directly in real-time instead of playing pre-recorded samples. You could also play pre-recorded samples (and many games did this for drums, especially) but the hardware's capability to do this was limited because it had to be done on the CPU and there was no hardware mixing. The Yamaha audio chip inside the Mega Drive is a slightly-retarded version of the same chips found inside Yamaha's popular synthesizers that were all over the place in 1980s music, and it can do some incredible things in the right hands, but it took a lot more effort to get good-sounding music out of the Mega Drive, especially if you were using a pre-made audio driver like Sega of America's much-maligned GEMS driver. Most of the most famous Mega Drive composers, like Jesper Kyd and Yuzo Koshiro, wrote their own sound drivers for the system (!). If you want to hear songs that were made for the original hardware instead of imitations of the sound like this, search for songs made using "DefleMask" or "Furnace" tracker software. You also can use the keywords "YM2612" and "OPN2" to find music made for the Mega Drive's audio chip! Happy listening!
Sounds a lot like a missing original DOOM soundtrack! Mainly because one of the computers I had growing up, the soundcard had the same audio chip as the genesis. Love it!
The shortest straw tho. Holy f dude that solo just shredded my glass processor. Why do i feel like im dodging falling heads being thrown from a mid boss? Oh wait
When I think of bands like Metallica in video game sound fonts, I think of Genesis. It's just too perfect to use anything else. Genesis always had that punky gritty metal tone.
I want more! Off topic but I would love to hear The Smashing Pumpkins Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness done as this. This is beautiful. Absolutely beautiful.
When in proper hands, the Genesis sound chip can produce incredible music. Some personal favorite games with exemplary soundtracks: Streets of Rage 2, Shining Force 2, Shinobi 3, Splatterhouse 3, Castlevania: Bloodlines, Thunder Force IV, M.U.S.H.A., Ranger X.
This would pair so well with classic Gen games like Castlevania, Road Rash, Rock and Roll Racing, Ghouls n' Ghosts, and Golden Axe to name a few. Excellent tunes man. Please do more.
I don't want to be a pedant but since the Sega Genesis used FM Algorithms to generate its sound it's technically impossible to capture the entire range of the sounds a Genesis could create with a soundfont as the sound is entirely procedural instead of baked-in. A soundfont would be more like a "best of Genesis FM" taking the best algorithms that people created for the device and recreating them as samples. If you want to learn more about this, there's quite a few videos about how FM synthesis works, with the sega genesis using a cut-down version of the Yamaha DX7 (to my knowledge). Also this is pretty great 😁
The "One" solo is absolutely incredible.

The Genesis synthesizer chip was so much better and darker sounding than the SNES.
@@arsxxmoriendiagreed, to me the SNES was only super insane amazing using the soundboard during Megaman X1 through X3
Oh and the one time Doom sounded better than the shot storm we got on the 32x
Hell, I just want more FM synth. If the vehicle for that happens to be Sega Genesis music, I'll take it!

All hail lady Justice!!
The Genesis sound font sounds so much better than the N64 sound font tunes that I've heard.
Genesis has some bangers
Marble Zone theme is one of the best video game themes IMO.
genesis does what nintendon't
Genesis sounds were always more "metal" sounding than N64 with lots of rock guitar sounds, so I think that's why it works so well
@@hettel_visual They were really gritty.
One goes astronomically hard. I would absolutely love to see this album in the original Doom sound font if possible
All you'd need is a good Metallica midi and either a genuine SC-55 or choose one of the many soundfonts trying to emulate it.
I was going to say the first thing that this reminded me of was the music in DOOM 🤣🤣🤣
“Goes hard”?
Like an erection?
@@zerosoma33 from Urban Dictionary: something that goes hard is menacing and/or badass
It reminds me of games like Skitchin' or the Road Rash series. I love this.
At the times this reminded me a lot of the good old Road Rash 2 and 3 games. Hell these songs would fit in the game like a chain whip to the face. 😎👍
Road Rash 3 UK stage has major New Wave of Heavy Metal Vibes.
This version is somehow cooler than the Mario 64 version you made. haha

If someone made a 16 bit Metallica video game based off their early music videos and albums... I'd be down with that.

Genuinely though, the bass sounds so good in the Genesis soundfont. I mean it does when it's added back into the original mix too but this is great.
