화랑유원지는 안산시 단원구 초지동 지역 주민들의 건전한 여가 생활과 체력 단련에 기여할 목적으로 조성되었다.
총 면적은 632,107㎡이다. 화랑호수와 산책로, 경기도미술관, 단원각 등이 시민들에게 자연 휴식 공간으로 제공되고 있으며, 잔디광장·중심광장 인라인스케이트장·야외공연장·자연학습장 등을 비롯하여 어린이교통공원·족구장·농구장·게이트볼장·간이축구장 등의 체육 시설이 마련되어 있다. 화랑유원지 내에는 관목류 13만 주, 교목 14만 주 등의 수목들이 식재되어 있다.
2016년 현재 화랑유원지 내에 위치한 화랑호수에는 갈대와 물풀·부레옥잠·연꽃 등이 서식하고 있어 수생 식물 관찰이 가능하다. 또한 흰죽지와 알락오리·흰뺨검둥오리·쇠오리·넓적부리오리 등의 겨울 철새들이 떼를 지어 찾아와 자연학습장으로서의 구실을 하고 있다. 단원각에서는 매년 새해맞이 타종 행사가 열린다. 안산의 동서남북을 잇는 지점에 위치해 교통이 편리하며 접근성이 용이하여 누구나 쉽게 찾을 수 있다.

There are 130,000 shrubs and 140,000 trees planted in Hwarang Resort.
As of 2016, Hwarang Lake located in Hwarang Resort is home to reeds, water plants, water hyacinths, and lotuses, allowing for the observation of aquatic plants. Also, winter migratory birds such as the white-tailed geese, the swans, the white-cheeked geese, the mallards, and the broad-billed geese come in flocks, making it a natural learning center. A New Year's bell-ringing event is held at Danwon-gak every year. It is located at the point connecting the east, west, south, and north of Ansan, so transportation is convenient and it is easy to access, so anyone can easily visit.
