As soon as I saw the costume for the Golden Voyager, I knew in my soul something was off. I was watching the ceremony on NBC, and they said this whole sequence was supposed to be some kind of abstract homage to Frenchman Pierre de Coubertin, the creator and founder of the Modern Olympic Games. They said he was the "golden voyager" who uncovered the history of the ancient Greek Olympics, and the rings coming out of the set (which was shaped like the world map if you look closely) was supposed to represent that discovery as well as the world coming together to resurrect the games. The end of the sequence when the Olympic rings appear was supposedly representative of the Games finally coming back over a millennium after the fall of ancient Greece.
If they hadn't been commentating the whole time, I would have been utterly and completely lost, but even still, something in my spirit just saw all of this and knew something wasn't quite right, although I couldn't quite pinpoint it until seeing this video. If Olympic history was what they were truly trying to portray, there were millions of better ways in which they could have done so. Hopefully, Milan Los Angeles will do a better job at bringing back the artistry and historicism that Olympic ceremonies used to be known for without having to completely mock an entire religion to do so. Considering the times we live in and the current trend of humanity, however, I won’t be surprised if they follow the same trend France did.
