    I wish people would buy out the old Tv Towers and start broadcasting again. The last channel out here in Canada was CBS. I was sad to see it go :( Id love to buy a broadcasting tower if I could find one.

    Interesting, I never thought about buying a short range transmitter to make my own little analogue TV channel. I know I can't get anything more than short range because I've looked into the FCC laws and enforcement, and I don't want to get a criminal record just because I wanted to tinker with broadcasting to my analogue CRT collection, but still something fun.

    This is actually legal in the US as long as your broadcast's range does not go past 300 ft., otherwise it's best to apply for a broadcaster's license.

    I use a DVD player connected with a scart cable (RGB) to an old satellite receiver with an internal coax mudulator (PLL, so very stable and right on frequency), and two antenna amplifiers in series to increase the output signal of the modulator. The whole thing is tuned to channel 40 UHF with a matching antenna for that frequency. Excellent picture quality, way sharper than SD terrestrial digital tv. Only the sound is in mono, but I can live with that.

    I like the transmitters that can broadcast more than one channel, such as the ones that used to transmit cable TV to homes within a radius of whom didn't have cable boxes... Or possibly someone who setup a rig for easy cable access through their home, but it was a very generous thing to do.

  • @johnmcentyre918

    To all the idiots saying this is illegal, of course it is. The fcc has broadcasting licenses for a reason. You could use this video to legally start up a station with the right equipment and proper authorization. this is more of a proof of concept, anyone with a brain and critical thinking can see that!

  • @purplemutantas
    @purplemutantas 11 лет назад +4

    If you want to do this legally get an amateur radio license. That would allow you to use any antenna you like an a max transmit power of 1500 watts PEP. I have been thinking of getting an amateur television transmitter to play with. It might be fun to hook one of those up to a helmet cam. Unfortunately in my area on the 70 cm band there is only one ATV channel available. Of course I always have the option to use other bands. Some experiments with ATV on the 13 cm band are in order.

    @gdrewpowers it's not illegal if you broadcast to a "whitespace" channel, which is unused television bandwidth. The FCC has a search engine so that you can search for channels that aren't being used. Then you can broadcast to those.

  • @helloworldstein

    @miniclip876 I think most of the digital channels are taken up by TV stations so your signal would get pwned by those coming from stations, but I think you might be able to get a digital transmitter and find a empty channel to broadcast.

    This is a great way to broadcast free cable and other fee-based media such as DVDs from a paying customer to a non paying customer. The only problem is that you would have to have a dedicated "server" that would be a computer or television to broadcast from. The great thing about wireless is it is no longer a 1:1 connection but a 1: many.

    Not all of the analog channels are open due to low powered stations being able to stay with analog because of the cost of DTV transmitters. The reason everybody was forced to switched to DTV was to open room for other communications.
    I think this is legal only if you don't broadcast a certain distance and not hindering or disrupting anybody else's signal. So yes the FCC is still in control of all analog channels and like I said they have plans for these channels.

    Those frequencies are not in fact open for free unlicensed use. In the US, you can get a knock on the door from the FCC if you get caught, and the fines are very hefty. You should warn your viewers about the laws.
    Many of the UHF frequencies are now what digital TV are using. Please do not get your viewers into trouble.

      I think it depends on the radius. If it's a box that only broadcasts in your house, I doubt there'd be much issue. Broadcasting to your neighborhood however.... that might get you in trouble.
      Kinda like those mini fm radio transmitters people use in their cars when they don't have an aux input. Technically, broadcasting over fm radio is illegal too. But the signal on those things is just so weak that no one would probably know about it, give or take, care.

    I can't see how the transmitter would be legal. The FCC is very very very strict about these things and the fines for broadcasting without a license are atronomically high. The risks hardly outweigh the potential costs. You can stream video on ustream and other services for free and legally, provided you have the copyrights to the content.

  • @hittingrabbit
    @hittingrabbit 12 лет назад +3

    The reason as to why the digital televisions don't include that simple mode option, is because the cable networks are carrying the local channels (that used to be free), and as a consumer you now have to pay for network television.
    Remember cable had no advertising?
    Those days are now gone, once they tricked people into getting cable, they increased the cost, and locked out over the air broadcasts, if an emergency happened and they dont want you to know, you wont know.

    Yes, and No. If the signal can be gotten over 300 feet from where its coming from, its illegal, if its just static 300 feet away from the source, it isnt illegal. However, you probably won't be getting even 100 feet with one of these transmitters, unless you hook it up to a roof antenna.

    Yes it is. But you can do it legally with an amateur radio license. Provided you operate on an amateur radio band your transmission is directed to at least one other amateur, your transmission power doesn't exceed 1500 watts PEP, and you ID at the end of your transmission or every 10 minutes. There are of course other rules, but those are the basics.

    Yes, it's illegal. And, the transmission is easily traceable. The FCC can triangulate the signal right to your front door. And, if you send out a dirty signal that "cross-talks" and causes interference across channels used by air-traffic or emergency services (and if you're not a trained engineer, that's very easy to do without you knowing it) you can find yourself with not just a hefty fine, but also some very serious prison time.

My laptop did not have any form of TV out, it requires a special tv card or video card. I did get the transmitter working with a DVD player going into it, but the strength of the transmitter's signal was absolutely horrible. I bought the exact same transmitter in the video. It wouldn't reach across the living room.

    The question should be is it lawful. Just because something may be legal or illegal does not mean its lawful or unlawful. When it comes to legality, we are dealing in a commercial society aspect of things. We, as men/women in the life form have nothing to do with the legality of things. We live under law. We are free to do as we please as long as it does not infringe on the rights of others to do the same.

    @GeneralOJB The Avira firewall is not that good, its anti-virus is much better, and I would not recommend windows firewall. It literally blocks almost nothing. As long as you are not going to dangerous sites or giving out personal information, you should be fine, but otherwise I would recommend PC tools. It has to initialize when you log on, which takes about 20 seconds on an old computer, but once its done that it has almost no performance impact. Much faster on new computers.

    @SirGufix No. It's only legal if you get a whole bunch of federal licenses.

    So I was thinking of starting several UHF stations around the USA, but do I need a certain license? Please reply, my dream is to make a sitcom network. And yes, I know it is Analog.

      Sadly, since the analog to digital transition is still ongoing, the FCC won't accept new TV licenses. If you want an analog TV station, you could move on to digital TV, because everyone uses that.
