These videos make me cry every time I watch one. I remember my family and culture intact. The days of old…went too quickly for me. Too much change. I guess, never being able to live there ever again, makes this hurt .
I love the old, unspoiled accent of my childhood. So nice to hear. The old people sounds like my people. Makes me miss my grandparents. I’m 50…not a youngin, but I miss it so much.
I remember the mummers coming in my Nan’s. No liquor in her house. A bit of Purity syrup, or a bit if “drink” (cola). I’m sure they were just my relatives. I can’t remember now. It was 40 years ago!
I grew up in the huge urban metropolis of Corner Brook, I guess during the 80's. I remember we had this weird christmas album on vinyl with creepy mummer faces on it, but I never knew what it was all about. Then one year, totally by surprise, the mummers turned up at our door, just like this. My parents were CFAs and kind of freaked out. I remember being pretty scared at all these lunatics demanding rum and such and I think I was sent upstairs. It turned out to be a few of the guys from up the street and was really pretty awesome in the end. Man, I really miss that place sometimes.
Now each year at Christmas I think of it still, no matter wherever I be; in fancy my mind wanders back to my youth to that snug little spot by the sea. It was "come into my house, so humble and small, let's drink a toast to us here! To the twelve days of Christmas we'll drink to them all with a wish for a Happy New Year!"
