    Just got a kunekune for our 20 acre homestead. We have a Vietnamese pot belly already. Love the video!!! We're city slickers who somehow ended up hanging out in the country!

    I use feed up until about 3 months of age then wean them off it. I do this just to help wean off the sow and eventually I’m go to skip that. After the weaning I just pasture in summer and hay/alfalfa in the winter. I also throw them the windfall apples and pears. I’ve had no health issues and all look fantastic and I never have to worry about them being overweight. I know what the experts say and so far from what I’ve seen I’m betting the feed companies have a lot to do with what we believe these pigs need.

    Very interesting information. I have noticed that several farmers are going with the Mangalitsa pig, why did you chose the Kunekune pig.

    • @bootstorootsfarm
      @bootstorootsfarm  3 года назад

      Good question! We chose KuneKunes because of the demand in our area although we haven’t tried Mangalitsas.

    Hi there! Love your video. We are hoping to get kunekunes in a few months. We opted to build a sturdy hog panel/t-post pen for them instead of electric fencing. We spaced the t-posts super close together and feel like the kunes won't easily get out. HOwever, we're now a little worried about predators getting in! Not sure why that didn't cross my mind before, b ut we are in coyote country. Do you worry about predators getting your piggies? Do you lock them up at night? Thanks!

      Congratulations on your decision to get KKs! I hope you love them as much as we do! We don’t use fencing as our predator control but rather Livestock Guardian Dogs. We have two Great Pyrenees girls that patrol the pastures and barn. They are wonderful for us but you would have to decide if they would work for you. Good luck!

    Thanks for the great Kunekune video. I'd like to get a couple kunekune pigs and start my own little kunekune farm. What is the cost of a piglet? I have plenty of land but little pasture land. If you're in Maryland, you have lots of cold weather. I'm in southeastern North Carolina so that kind of reduces the winterizing steps (so what does that mean? I truly don't know; it just sounded good (smile)). Would like to reach out and learn more about getting a couple kunekune pigs. Thanks much. NEW SUBSCRIBER!! I will be watching to learn more. 👍🏽🙂

    I don’t think you mentioned that the “teat line” characteristic is passed by the male or boars

    The pigs are beautiful, but you need to improve your presentation.
