Custom Car Stereo Installation in a Tool Box

  • In this video I show you how I upgraded my toolbox by installing a car stereo into the top compartment. Most of the materials used were things I had laying around. The radio is surprisingly loud and clear. There are no vibrations from the cabinet or tools inside. The range of the sound goes from very high frequencies to pretty low bass considering they are small size speakers.
    It's louder and sounds better than any job site radio I've heard. I'm very pleased with the way it turned out.
    Let me know if there is anything you would change or think I should add. If you like the video give it a thumbs up and be sure to subscribe to my RUclips channel.

    Hey Bill. Your videos helped me fix a " trashed dryer" that only needed a thermal fuse for a total of 30$ and also showed all the extras to test for. Thank you. Meant the world for my friend and extra knowledge for me. Enjoy how you show the whole project. Lots of confidence after watching your vids. Thanks again..

    Very cool!! A few years back Kobalt had a roll around tool box with a stereo in it and also a little fridge!! It was over 20yrs ago.

    Can't believe i'm the only one asking how it sounds.
    Very clean video though. There are many ways to do this of course and this is just one way. Good video just would have loved to hear it.

    love it. Your description was very detailed. Great idea. I'm sure its a lot cheaper for you to install your own stereo than to purchase a tool box w/ one already in it. Great job.

    I was thinking about doing the same thing with my toolbox but I prefer my speakers inside mounted inside with the stereo head unit rather than cutting holes in my toolbox. I was thinking about triangle pieces of sheet metal tacked/welded in the back top corners like the BIG stainless Kobalt toolbox (Model #53SS19D13) that already has stereo and speakers built-in. I was at West Marine recently and found a white ABS plastic housing for $20 specifically made to mount stereo head units in boats. It would look more professional and polished as if designed for that application with just a little black spray paint. Overall, you did a nice job.

    That's cool. I seem to out grow tool boxes every few years so it's overflowing into 4 drawer file cabinets now. I like the idea of a stereo in tool chest, saw that once at brainerd international raceway.

      I seem to outgrown them too. I started with the middle section of that toolbox, then added the bottom part, then splurged on the top section. Still not enough room! Thanks for Watching!

    Pretty nice, I would've either made a square hole on the back wall of the toolbox to where the stereo sits on top of the power supply OR mounted the stereo on the ceiling of the toolbox lid. I'd just rather not loose next to no space in a small toolbox like that

    Great idea and great job..just wished you had shown more of the wiring being done for those like me who doesn't know how to wire a radio other then that awesome

    • @devinbirmingham2811
      @devinbirmingham2811 4 года назад

      All you need to wire up a radio is this...
      Positive, one for the power and another for the memory
      Negative to complete the circuit
      Then look at your wiring harness on your radio, it'll have 4 sets of wires, a solid color and the same color with black stripe, solid is power for the speaker and the black stripe is the negative 👍 all 4 of your speakers will have different colors that correspond to where it plays from.

    Not bad but you should have put a trim ring behind the speaker so the magnet didn't go all the way through otherwise looks sweet good job bro

    For better sound quality, especially low frequencies, I would suggest put a peace of plywood behind toolbox side walls, where speakers are installed. In other words speakers sounds much, much better if you cut them in big peace of wood!

    The only thing is, you don't have the sp3akers enclosed, there for not having full potential of the best sound produced from speakers, I've built a box that holds a car radio and 2 5 inch speakers, 2 2 inch tweeters, and a 4 inch sub wired up with an old ps2 cord. Works great , but I like the idea. Just some tips to help any one wanting to build something like this

    I would put Green and Black on switch, and would use Violet (5V Stand By) to power 5-12v booster and use that for memory. Also you can use Red (5V) to charge your phone.

  • @blakedoan2394
    @blakedoan2394 6 лет назад

    not a bad idea, your handy work looks pretty good (besides the open wires in your power supply :P.) I'm sure your speakers/box are going to give weird resonance and sound tinny as hell. sheet metal is basically the worst thing you could use for an acoustic enclosure. try throwing some dynamat under those bad boys. or if you are willing to hack the inner wall of your box a bit more try throwing some speaker pod enclosures in the back. Should make for quite the improvement over the half cut sheet metal magnet hole type situation you are currently running. just an idea and some constructive criticism.

  • @chrisbevins1218

    Don't really need the washers I would suggest getting screws that would fit in the hole the speaker won't go anywhere

  • @edwardsativacomedy5626
    @edwardsativacomedy5626 7 лет назад

    Hey, Bill. I have a very old truck. And I do not want to make any cuts or mods to the interior for installing/mounting a stereo. Any way I could just run my IPod directly to an amp?

    • @chrisbevins1218
      @chrisbevins1218 6 лет назад

      Edward Sativa Comedy you could buy an FM modulator which would play your iPad or iPod or phone or anything else through the radio directly in to your truck without having to do anything or secret audio makes some other options check their website out you could run an amp with RCA's with an aux wire the speakers directly to the amp then you don't have to do anything else no cutting no modifying in any amp will work so just though 100 watt amp less than 50 bucks course you would need the power wires ground wire and have to buy the RCA to aux adapter but definitely do it all for less than 50 bucks 75 bucks and you could probably upgrade all the speakers and everything have a great sounding system and not have to change your dash just hide the amp underneath the seat run the aux cord up to the cigarette lighter leave it in there you're good to go

  • @showcasecharlie11
    @showcasecharlie11 7 лет назад

    would have been better to bend you some sheet metal and mount the speakers in the lid, then some sheet metal bent and drilled for the radio. hide the wiring. smaller power supply. look at Macs MB1700 series toolbox to see what I mean. It would look like a more factory like install.

    I plan on using the kobalt usb port in box to power tablet that has built in AM/FM and spotify, linked to a bluetooth USB powered port2 on box power strip. DONE, Now I can watch RUclips car hot to videos, search the web for trouble codes and get messages from wife using phone clone. All text etc will be on tablet. Keep my phone away from cars but still keep contact with family and customers. No need for cabinet or wiring etc. You can simply use 4 tiny magnets hot glued onto tablet back and then stick onto tool box where ever you like. The magnets are only 1/4 inch by 1/8 inch.
    Already own the 1 year old tablet and blue tooth speaker we bought on HSN using easy pay last xmas. It also came with bluetooth USB keyboard so I dont have to use touch screen or I can use keyboard from inside the car or my desk etc.

    why did you put washers on it? since you put those on a plastic grill it's less secure with washers then it would be if you just put the screw all that way through like it's supposed to be, because then the screw would be tightening the speaker to the metal instead of just resting against the plastic grill like it is right now. also they kind of look retarded.
