@@rawsy4769 I guess the TV stations that aired the censored version went “we don’t want all the music videos to get explicit, despite us airing really adult programs at times”. TV stations and networks can have weird double standards I guess.
Back when this was released music videos and songs were censored or they couldn't be played on MTV or the radio - you can thank your Christian "moral majority" for that.

@was looking for this comment. This is the first time I’ve seen this music video/ listening to this song since I was about 10 (18 now) because I never understood what the song was really about when I was younger. Coming back to it now is completely different. THE best song/music video for storytelling I’ve ever seen. (Sorry for the long reply)
This is the rare actual uncensored video that shows Stan chugging alcohol and Dido tied up in the trunk of his car. All the other "explicit version" videos online were just the censored video with the explicit audio synced up with it.
EM WANTED the REALNESS TO BE SEEN AND FELT. I remember when this dropped and MTV showed it randomly mostly at night. Then it just never got air play.... Took me back to that first day 💯
One of the best story based music videos ever. Em casting Dido herself as the main female role in a song with a chorus that samples her was a power move.
the sad thing about this song is at the end, when Eminem says "it was you.." and the music stops, if you look at the window when the thunder crashes you can see Stan's ghost.. staring at Eminem in disappointment.
Damn, I can't help but to feel bad for everyone involved in this song. Stanley, for feeling that his idol had let him down to the point where it drove him to suicide, Matthew, for losing his older brother and blaming his former hero, Stanley's girlfriend, for somehow putting up with Stanley which would later cause her demise along with her unborn child, and Eminem, who wanted to help him, but by the time he got the letter, it was too late, causing him to be cited as the reason Stanley died. This is most certainly how you write a good tragedy story
@@locdaddy9295shit happens my fav band deleted the only date on italy for their concert sadly i could even afford the vip ticket well it's gone now ("starset" btw no t a fan on stan's level but i like their music ) but life goes on
7:07 Did anyone else notice that the flowers that Stan's mother throws on his grave are yellow and white? (Symbolic of Em's/Stan's bleached hair and white T-shirt.) The attention to details is amazing: this isn't a music video, it's a short film.
I get what you’re saying completely but the thing is that the people that say ‘stan’ have never listened to this song, let alone even heard of it. It’s quite sad. There are some that have heard the song but they are all just uneducated.
Here he tells a story, darkness tells two stories, next album multiple parallel stories described and told by the same set of words. This guy sets standards and crushes them
It’s not used as a positive thing them weird as Ariana grande fans start using it without knowing the meaning fully they didn’t even kno Eminem basically made the word Stan they were saying it just means super fan lmao
This song really hits when you know you have people looking up to you. I really wasn’t expecting to cry listening to it this time, but life changes you.
I find it really sad that people are glad to say they are stans after watching the song and knowing the definition of a Stan is a person completely obsessed with a person to the point of stalking them. It's really sad.
@@Heytheremrsky no I'm pretty sure he made the song Stan to give light to the story if the guy who killed his pregnant wife and self because he didn't get a letter back.
this is easily my favourite song of all time. a song like this, sung like this about topics like these just hits so hard. i was a victim of sexual assault when i was 8 and i've had PTSD since i was 5 (it's a long story). my dad was absent from my life a lot and we never really got along that well. music was and still is my outlet, and this song just always gets me in the feels. this song has saved my life so many times i don't even remember now. Em, if you're seeing this, i hope you know that i'm thankful to you for making this song, and i want you to know that my girlfriend's pregnant. if she's having a boy, we're calling him Stan, after the song you wrote. it saved us both so many times and we're infinitely grateful for it and it's just incredibly important to us. thank you.
Let me be clear, I'm usually not a fan of rap or hip hop. AT ALL. But I can't help to admire Eminem's lyrical skills and appreciate his music. It stands out pretty strongly from most, if not all other rap I've heard.
I really love that how Eminem changes the sense of Dido’s song. While in hers meant that everything would be ok while her special person is by her side, being optimistic in the end, here it shows a sad story about a fan who found shelter in Eminem escaping from his tragic life but he became obsessed. Even his childhood was tragic witnessing domestic abuse against her mom and how his father cheated on her numerous times. Everything, from the lyrics to the video, brings tears to my eyes, it’s so perfect.
yeah true I totally agree, the original version where she was singing about unicorns hit me harder though because when the great fairy came into her life it was a nod to the true mafia story of 1974 and that resonated with me less
The hardest part of this video is seeing Stan's mum see that Matthew bleached his hair in memory of his older brother, and the haunted look in her eyes. Every actor in this is brilliant at showing the devastating effects of excessive fanaticism, and it's such a shame that the meaning of the phrase has been watered down by people calling themselves 'stans' for different artists and being proud of it, even though that's the exact opposite intention of the phrase to what Em wanted to express.
@@thewallfangirl2980 I kinda doubt that, because Stan's girlfriend is most likely chilling with Spongebob and Patrick at the moment on account of being tied up in the boot of the same car Stan drowned in without restraints
I randomly listened to this while driving my car and it brought tears to my eyes. Not because of the brilliance of the story and all that goes with it, but because of the pure nostalgia I suddenly associate with this song 🥲🥹
Stan: here’s that autograph for your brother I wrote it on a starter cap Kill shot: here’s that autograph graph for your daughter, I wrote it on a starter cap
I read a comment it jokingly said Stanley's young brother was MGK. What if that line from "killshot" was a reference of "Stan" 😂 Eminem is a f***ing genius
That last verse is so amazing, it's something I've never heard before, a trick verse. You think M is going to say "His name was Stanley too" but he says "His name was St.. It was you" wow Eminem is such a lyricist.
He made this song to talk about the type of fan mail he got, and how disturbing some times it can be... this song is about some of the hardest and most messed up parts about being famous. Getting mail from crazed fans threatening to kill themselves if the celebrity doesn’t answer. Your not a real fan if you threaten the celebrity with your life just for a response. Real fans actually care about the celebrity and realize that they have feelings too, and that just because they are famous doesn’t mean that they still aren’t a normal person. Society is cruel...
Yes. And then he turns around and gives us a grocery list of what we need, to be a *real* Eminem Stan. Including that album he did with Rawkus. And don't forget that underground stuff he did with Skam!
not if they have mental issue's. The singer always sings about mental issues but how many of them really have it? There mostly rich and famous normal people are not and have nobody to fall on.
"He made this song to talk about the type of fan mail he got, and how disturbing some times it can be..." You have a source to back that up? From what I've read, he wrote this when he was just becoming famous and he was surprised that people wanted to meet him and knocked on his door.
Every time I listen to this song, I cry. Last year, my father passed due to overdose. He was just like Stan, except he wasn't this obsessive. He always wanted to make new friends, meet new people and relate to them. He was so nice to me and so many other people, but sadly, he put too much trust into certain things and people, and he passed away. He loved this song so much, and eminem was one of his favorite artists. Every time this song comes on in my playlist, I remember him. Miss you.
Used to listen to this song when I was younger and just liked the song but as you get older you start to actually listen to the lyrics properly and realize how deep it is
This song hits hard. My mum always used to sing the chorus when I was little, it's not til I grew up and realised she went through what the lady in the video did, makes me cry everytime I hear this song now, love you mum.
Man this hit me just now after all these years. When he says "That's my girlfriend in the trunk but I didn't slith her throat, I ain't like you" is a reference to Eminem's track "Just the 2 of us" , and it's incredible the level of song writing where he himself can write about a fan critisizing himself
In a way it reinforces the craziness of the fan too, because it's almost as if he believes everything written in Em's songs. (Of course it's only one way to interpret it, I believe he's not that dillusional and just means it as a diss. But its cool to think about)
This is one of the reasons people say Eminem is on the goat list because anybody can make a one hit wonder or a club banger but very few mcs can tell a story and pull you in like reading a book or watching a great movie
@@dom4814 This ain't dirty, this is the original, how it was meant to be, and how it was envisioned by Eminem. The other versions, are the Marketing cuts, to make more money with this song!
Wow, just wow is the only way to describe this song, i went from loving the tune to learning the lyrics to not getting it out my head and finally understanding the meaning. And the song is so carefully tied together about the growing painful obbsesion even the name of the song relates to it if you search up what is the origin of the name stan. Its gery unsettling: While some say the term is a combination of "fan" and "stalker," "stan" was first coined in 2000 when Eminem dropped a twisted allegory in a song called "Stan," about a man who was pushed to the edge when his idol wouldn't answer his fan mail. The word used to be synonymous with overzealous or obsessed. Unbelievable
This is a true piece of art! This was so groundbreaking when it was released, the youth of today who love Eminem have no idea what it was really like when he started to blow up like he was a PHENOMENON and still is,never a better rapper to grace the earth better than him TELL ME IM WRONG 😭😭😭😭
One of the most intense and disturbing mv I have ever seen. When I was like 18 I remember us all smoking weed and drinking and this video came on and we were stunned, everyone stopped drinking smoking, nobody talked for like a minute after this. Dido and Devon Sawa deserved way more accolades for their performances than they got. This mv is a part of music history now, and stanning is part of our shared language. This deserves mad respect for its unabashed showing of what it’s like for a celebrity when a mentally ill person falls in love with them. Eminem is a genius, this is why he has been so successful and still sits on top of Rap as the Rap God. He was challenging more old white man barriers than anyone ever had back when everyone just was trying to live in a censored world without choices; because of course old white men expected younger black men to challenge them, but a young white man was supposed to take it up the butt by the established order like they always had. Eminem said fuck y’all to that. This is why my 60 yr old pretend perfect Christian aunt had a few Eminem cd’s stashed in her trunk. You can’t hide from someone who you need to see.
I agree, this song and half his music is like, little pockets of time, selected and told perfectly, the other half is him bull shitting, and people love him for his realism, unfiltered emotions
Yeah man and what's sad but also funny people hate him because how he makes him music and stuff a good example is obviously this song because just to get it our there without it being censored labeled it dirty because of stupid reasons
Ok, but i dont get what races or color of skin has to do with this, i find it incredible that you have such a racist culture in US, distiguishing so hardly between color of skin.

That's kinda how this is, you could a rescued me from drowning Now it's too late, I'm on a thousand downers now, I'm drowsy And all I wanted was a lousy letter or a call I hope you know I ripped all of your pictures off the wall I love you Slim, we coulda been together, think about it You ruined it now, I hope you can't sleep and you dream about it And when you dream I hope you can't sleep and you scream about it I hope your conscience eats at you and you can't breathe without me See Slim, shut up bitch! I'm tryin' to talk! Hey Slim, that's my girlfriend screamin' in the trunk But I didn't slit her throat, I just tied her up, see I ain't like you 'Cause if she suffocates she'll suffer more, and then she'll die too Well, gotta go, I'm almost at the bridge now Oh shit, I forgot, how am I supposed to send this shit out? _(chorus)_ My tea's gone cold I'm wondering why I Got out of bed at all The morning rain clouds up my window And I can't see at all And even if I could it'll all be gray Put your picture on my wall It reminds me, that it's not so bad It's not so bad Dear Stan, I meant to write you sooner but I just been busy You said your girlfriend's pregnant now, how far along is she? Look, I'm really flattered you would call your daughter that And here's an autograph for your brother I wrote it on the Starter cap I'm sorry I didn't see you at the show, I must of missed you Don't think I did that shit intentionally just to diss you But what's this shit you said about you like to cut your wrists too? I say that shit just clownin' dog, come on, how fucked up is you? You got some issues Stan, I think you need some counseling To help your ass from bouncing off the walls when you get down some And what's this shit about us meant to be together? That type of shit will make me not want us to meet each other I really think you and your girlfriend need each other Or maybe you just need to treat her better I hope you get to read this letter, I just hope it reaches you in time Before you hurt yourself, I think that you'll be doin' just fine If you relax a little, I'm glad I inspire you but Stan Why are you so mad? Try to understand, that I do want you as a fan I just don't want you to do some crazy shit I seen this one shit on the news a couple weeks ago that made me sick Some dude was drunk and drove his car over a bridge And had his girlfriend in the trunk, and she was pregnant with his kid And in the car they found a tape, but they didn't say who it was to Come to think about, his name was, it was you Damn!
I've heard this song so many times and I just came back to it. I'm still shocked by how amazing it is. The storytelling is amazing. It's incredibly sad, and what makes it even sadder is that stuff like this can actually happen if someone becomes too mentally ill beyond help like Stan was. Stan was so obsessed with Eminem because he was the only one who was able to help him through his mental illness, but it wasn't enough because it wasn't actual therapy. It's honestly really sad. Also idk if this is based on a true story or not but if it is it makes it even sadder and devastating
This shit got my eyes tearful, I can't believe how great and powerful that song really is. Definitely will help me clear my mind when I work out. Stay strong everyone ❤️
I love how 80% of Eminem comment sections are just talking about clean/dirty. Now, with that out of the way, it's real interesting to look at the brief moment where Stan meets Eminem in the second verse closely. You can see that Em actually looks quite uncomfortable. Not looking enthusiastic at all.
I was 15 when this album dropped. Back when you bought a physical C.D. My friend looked like he was 18 and they didnt card him when we bought this. Stayed in the player for weeks straight.
Thanks to my 8th grade teacher, whom was close friends of dido, I discovered didos music, Eminem is the greatest. 30 years old now, and I have to admit as a poor kid, Eminem was my go to. Made me feel like I wasn't the only one going through. Time flies by quick.
Damn, I'm a 68 year-old ex-construction-worker/hobo/skeptic but I have to admit, this piece of lyrical, melodic music just stunned me. From a purely stylistic standpoint, considering the story, the communicative power and the overarching rhythm tying it all together it was exquisite. I've, of course, heard of Eminem and I've even heard a little bit of his stuff like the theme-song from Godzilla and the thing he does at the end of "Eight Mile", I've heard those but apparently Hollywood isn't getting his good stuff because this was just on a different level. It was meaningful and ordinary at the same time, which is part of the magic, I think, Eminem doesn't appear to be trying to use language as leverage, as so many musicians and writers and performers often do, each in their own way trying to fiddle with your emotions, trying to invoke that emotional response that is the payoff but instead he invites you to walk down to the store with him or he'll talk to you like you just bumped into him coming down the stairs, he's present and he's got something to say and you are moved to listen and so, there-in, lay the true payoff. So, I figure I've got a good ten years left in which to broaden my horizons and experience new stuff and sample different things and just keep trying to grow before I wither and end up laying horizontal in a hole while some stranger throws dirt in my face...
Well said. And broadening your horizons will probably give you another 20 years my man. Enjoy the next phase of your life. Eminem is a rare musical and lyrical genius in our life time.
I hope you’ve got longer than that my friend. But yea, I really enjoy that a contemporary artist is still capable of depth and substance in their lyrics and orchestration

This is the rare actual uncensored video that shows Stan chugging alcohol and Dido tied up in the trunk of his car. All the other "explicit version" videos online were just the censored video with the explicit audio synced up with it.

Ok, but i dont get what races or color of skin has to do with this, i find it incredible that you have such a racist culture in US, distiguishing so hardly between color of skin.
@@apokkalyps6 why do you find it so surprising that race is so important here in the US? This country was founded on slavery - of course with that history there will always be deep wounds and scars. This country is still slowly healing.

FINALLY found this version after putting up w the fake "explicit" versions. Thank you 1000x over for posting❤ this song is the reason "stan" is part of gen z lingo (meaning "super fan" but most folks dont know the origin of it and they should)
Tells the story of so many of us men growing up as a boy hopeless and needing a father figure. Sad but direct truthful story.

I listened and wrote down his lyrics he spoken in this video.

Logan Bremerman me too until my dad heard it and took it from my CD player. A nice red and silver one 😉
Those were the days
Thanks to my 8th grade teacher, whom was close friends of dido, I discovered didos music, Eminem is the greatest. 30 years old now, and I have to admit as a poor kid, Eminem was my go to. Made me feel like I wasn't the only one going through. Time flies by quick.
This might be the best song ever.
May you live in power here and any dimensions u find yourself in 🪞❤️💯
Randomly replying to your comment but, I hope you have many more than just 10 years to enjoy and explore.
Much love,
Liam
respect
Stans ghost in the lighting part really scares the shit out of me
Stan would be happy wherever he his that Eminem even sang a song in his name
I love that his voice switch from slim to em
It was always Eminem singing, Slim sounds different
