    So this is the first I've watched in repairing the surround on a speaker. Just knowing what I do about glue in guessing that the brush should have been used to put a small coat on all connecting sides then allow about two minutes if dry time. Then you attach it to the cone and frame. This allows for a solid fusion of the surround. Other than that he does a great job.

    Use a small acid brush to prevent glue drip. The cone area with the over-glue will harden that paper area and reduce the quality of the over all speaker response.

    • @TheJTcreate

      Doesn't matter. His cone is damaged anyway. Was the first thing that leaped out at me when he started.

    Unfortunately this isn't a blown speaker. A blown speaker refers to a faulty/seized voice coil. This is a foam surround replacement. Still a good video though!

    I used an ordinary dinner ceramic plate to rest on the edge of the cone adding evenly distributed weight whilst the 'super glue' cured.. 3hours and repair real good.. 👍

    • @TheJTcreate
      @TheJTcreate 3 года назад

      Its a terrible job. You never rest your hand on a cone. In fact, you never put any weight on a cone like that, especially a dinner ceramic. That's a newb approach. No professional does that. Even a novice trainee is not allowed to do that. There are simplified approaches. Besides, this speaker is not a top mounted foam anyway. The edging mounts to the backside, which means this guy just screwed up the speaker's line of travel. Also, the cone is damaged. Its been wrinkled. So the speaker is going to "splat" and be distorted when he ups the power (aside from the alignment issues). Its the first thing that leaped out to me when he started removing the old cone was that the cone was wrinkled. Waste of time re-edging the cone until the cone has been properly re-enforced and the spider needs to be inspected.

      @@TheJTcreate As I have been working with loudspeakers re installs / repairs, crossover networks (making my own from winding the coils etc) re 1930s to present your statement is YOUR OWN opinion. As a PROFESSIONAL past AND present, the history of acoustics and equipment from the 1920s on is astonishing in itself. I do agree with you that it is essential in any repair to a loudspeaker that care has to be taken AND a great deal of patience required to get it right. Tools, necessary items AND adhesives etc as required with care and attention to detail. 😶I've NEVER had a problem with using the right diameter ceramic plate to hold the 'foam edging et /edging; in place until the adhesive has dried. It does NOT put weight on the CONE, as the ceramic plate EDGE sits on the EDGE only NOT the entire disc. 👀The centre of the plate is raised OFF the main cone. Ie a pie dish. Lastly, the main cone assembly re the main central voice coil etc should move free of dust and dirt/grit. The two connecting wires to the 'voice coil' should always be unsoldered BEFORE any attempt to remove the cone etc. Restoration on early wireless speaker assemblies with the transformers attached and powered NOT permanent magnet types require a lot more care and attention to then conventional speaker systems. 👀😶

      @@arthurdanielles4784 Ok, Pal! 1930s? Are you saying you are 80 years old? -Or are you trying to tell me that the stuff you have worked on came from that time period? Because, I actually came from a business that was first started in the 1930s and has seen every speaker, and all sorts of generations of technicians come through it. I've worked on all those generations of speakers from Field coil Organ speakers to Bozaks. Yes I will agree those were astonishing times when it came to speakers. But I do not come from home garage operation either.
      ----> "your statement is YOUR OWN opinion."
      No, its a fact! You are not the first person to come up with that idea of a ceramic dish and I have had to fix the outcome from people watching those unnecessary premises on RUclips. Heck you got people putting using small pots to do the same thing. Its unnecessary.
      ----> ". I do agree with you that it is essential in any repair to a loudspeaker that care has to be taken AND a great deal of patience required to get it right. "
      Yes and no. If you want to be a pro, yes. But if a Newb is given the right techniques and the right advice, they can do a good enough job and that is my point...Too many misleading videos and advice on youtube.
      ------> "I've NEVER had a problem with using the right diameter ceramic plate to hold the 'foam edging et /edging; in place until the adhesive has dried. It does NOT put weight on the CONE, as the ceramic plate EDGE sits on the EDGE only NOT the entire disc."
      If you are putting weight on anything other than the basket, its weight that ends up on the cone/coil assembly.. A paper cone! Which is prone to creasing and warping. Ok! Lets say you are correct. My question is...WHY?? Its completely unnecessary step even for a Newb. I think even you would agree that speaker repairs need to be kept simple stupid.
      ----> " Restoration on early wireless speaker assemblies with the transformers attached and powered NOT permanent magnet types require a lot more care and attention to then conventional speaker systems"
      You mean field coil speakers or Electrodyamics. Yes, I've had my share of repairing them. They were heavily favored in old Organs of the 1920s -1940s time period. Those coils required at least a 90-100 VDC charge (Jensens I believe were about 110 vdc) which is why they were not practical in a lot of portable applications But since metallurgy back then prevented people from making smaller size permanent magnets with strong flux, Field coils were a good alternative to keeping down weight. Amazingly we now have Neodymium magnets which have made 18" drivers so light, you can lift them with your pinky finger. Peavy did their Eminence 15" series with those.

      @@TheJTcreate Great to see someone wo at least is not part of the throwaway culture that infected so many over the decades. My brother was heavily into early valve radio / wind up Gramophone (78 rpm record units) spring replacements and similar. In the late 70s as a 13 year old, I worked during my school holidays, other times with studies AND I studied electrical engineering + with an ex military engineer👀 I learned self taught future electronics from valve to transistor to IC on. Late 80s I worked for a company building computer systems from soldering 'motherboards' /sorting and mounting components, ICs etc to ultrasonic cleaning to chemical cleaning to building the finish cabinet products for Reuters (int news agency etc) NOTE the late 80s! 👀I collect and have a collection of valve, transistor, IC gear that dates from the late 1930s through. Over the years I've earned from supporting musicians to ie bands re amps and keyboards /speaker assemblies etc. Of course radios etc use OSCILLATORS and guess what SYNTHS use.. 👽My partner of over 20 years is a professional computer programmer for a major logistics company in the UK and who's home pc systems/server systems I built and maintain. I also build home PC systems for family and friends etc Intel, Ryzen systems / upgrades/new etc. No probs there. So yes I still have a lot of years to go and can look back over the previous ones and smile ESPECIALLY when I see so many lazy unfocused, no real aspirations generation we have now.. of kids etc. 😶Before they have time to enjoy the new tech in their hands, one blink of the eyes and its changed again. 🙄My daughters have grown up appreciating what they have and NOT chasing the capitalist spin of must have the latest at all costs.. suffering on the part of the parents etc financially etc. 👍So yes, it is good to see there are still those who are into restoration, repair, regeneration etc 👍BUT sadly I doubt that will be the case in the future as more and more stuff from the last decades is thrown where it should have been from the off; out with the rubbish. Non recyclable plastic trash. Anyone who has seen, heard a solid walnut encased radio system or amp system would never look twice at the plastic garbage churned out certainly over the last decade. 👀

      He doesn't need the brush, and top mounting the foam was wrong anyway. I spent years as a speaker repair technician and used all sorts of tacky acetone based glues. Never used a brush. In fact, brushes lead to messes as soon as the glue gets stringy. Using the tip of the nozzle to smear the glue works fine. The guy just didn't make sure his nozzle was clean when he began.

    Pardon my ignorance on speaker basics - would like a tiny direction for my problem. I bought a 8inch 50 watt woofer (not sub woofer) about 15 years back, used it for few hours and it sounded good. I opened it today and connected it to my amplifier and it outputs too little volume. I gently pushed the cone and spider up, and the volume goes up and it vibrates well. How can I fix it? The spider feels hard... the soft rubber on the outer edge of the cone is soft/flexible...

    I don't agree with the "improper centering" comment in your description. Knowing even a little about speakers, I can tell you that it's the voice coil which needs to be centered, and you're not changing the voice coil, you're changing something that just needs to be glued on somewhat correctly. Provided your foam is the same size and doesn't pull the voice coil up or push it down, then the voice coil remains centered the whole time.

    • @engineglue

      I was a professionally trained speaker technician as well as JBL certified. Spent years rebuilding all sorts of speakers including this one. Unfortunately, your assumptions are completely wrong. The outer edge works in conjunction with the spider to maintain coil alignment, during the performance of the speaker. While gluing the edge to the cone is not the most critical part of the alignment, tacking it down to the basket is where the alignment will shift. You can't assume the spider will keep the alignment, especially when a speaker is being improperly re-edged as this one. Not to mention, when the cone has been over-stressed and is wrinkled.

    • @TheJTcreate
      @TheJTcreate 3 года назад

      White paper glue is better. Its more flexible. You don't want a glue that is too stiff on the edging and wood glues dry too stiff. You do need stiff glues (or cements) for a speaker, but not for the outer edging. For stiff glues, epoxy or an acetone based cement is the better choice. Those are for the spider and the coil/cone assembly. That's where you want the different parts to move the least. You want them clocked together as one piece. But for the edging, you want flexible glues.

      If your speaker is too quiet, two things are the problem. Your coil is either burned or your alignment is way off and rubbing against the gap of the magnet. This guy in the video is not really an expert. He is doing things all wrong to his speaker. He doesn't even realize his cone is damaged and wrinkled.

    isnt that kit a bit expensive for what it is?

    • @engineglue

      It does seem expensive however that is the going price and for me, two of those kits repaired $300 worth of speakers.

      engineglue i see thanks, but yea it depends on the price of the speakers, in your case it is 100% worth it.

    Hi!
    Can someone telle me please whats the problem with this speaker? It started to resonate/vibrate since yesterday. It resonates even on low volume level. It sound almost like when the volume level is to high and a speaker isnt capable to play without distortion. You have to watch the video on earphones to hear the wrong vibration. I can hear it comes 99 percent somewhere from the membrane. When i touch the membrane it becomes louder. I tooked the speaker apart, but found nothing loose inside that need to be tightend or something. Also when ive tooked the bass speaker from the housing it sounded normal. Only when i put it in the housing it started to resonate. Like it has something to do with the air. Also when i put a towel in the "subbasshole" in the front of the speaker the resonation disapears.
    If someone can tell me how to fix this, it would be very nice.
    Thanx
