- Boeing test pilot taking this cool F-15QA for a ride during Ted's Quick Climb Friday show. Yes, it requested a Quick Climb!
Where did it all begin...well, the first Eagle was the F-15A, which was made in July 1972, with the first flight of the two-seat F-15B (formerly TF-15A) trainer made in July 1973. The first Eagle (F-15B) was delivered in November 1974. In January 1976, the first Eagle destined for a combat squadron was delivered. With the F-15C and D variants becoming a proven combat aircraft too, the F-15E Strike Eagle derived from the original Eagle and became the next USAF project in March 1981. The first production model, 86-0183, made its first flight 11 December 1986.
In the F-15 legacy, it replaced the Phantom and F-111's and since entering service, the F-15 has dominated air combat in combat and with 104 air to air kills, it has zero losses.
The new improved F-15EX brought interest to the Qatari Emiri Air Force who have ordered their version of the F-15EX, the F-15QA Ababil who ordered a total of 34 aircraft in 2017. The F-15QA is one of the most advanced variants of the F-15's ever made with a new powerful engine, GE F110 Engine, FBW (Fly by Wire) system, advanced radar tech and additional weapons pylons to keep the Wizzo happy.
So what is a Quick Climb?
Unlike the Typhoon which accelerates vertically after between 8 to 10 seconds from brakes to take off, aircraft such as the F15E or F35A will usually clear the whole runway maintaining an altitude anywhere between 40-100ft with speeds of around 350mph and then pull the aircraft vertically or near vertical to quickly climb to the aircraft's cruising altitude. It is more commonly requested by the pilot as a "quick climb" more usual.
What is an Unrestricted Climb?
It is the same as a quick climb.
Why do they do Unrestricted climbs/PTOs/Quick climbs
There are many reasons such as clearing airspace barriers, short runways, to burn fuel before air-to-air refuelling or just to get to a destination quicker. Quick climbs can also be used in a combat scenario for both offensive and defensive, either getting out of a base quick from attacks or scramble to intercept. But these are just a few reasons, one also could be to impress the Ted!
RAF Lakenheath is the home of the 48th Fighter Wing and home to four combat ready fighter squadrons; 492nd FS, 493rd FS, 494th FS and the recently reactivated 'Valkyries', the 495th Fighter Squadron. It may carry the title RAF but it is a USAF base. This is because the base was originally built for and operated by the Royal Air Force in 1940. The airfield started life out as decoy airfield (Q-site) to RAF Mildenhall, which is about 5.5 miles the way the backwards crow flies. RAF Mildenhall was an established bomber station built in 1934 and to protect it, Lakenheath was chosen to become a decoy, to take any attacks. However, things changes and it was decided that RAF Lakenheath would become a satellite station to Mildenhall.
Lakenheath was home to 20 OTU with Wellington Bombers, 149 Squadron with their Short Sterling Bombers who were also joined later by 199 Squadron. After WWII, and from 1948, it then became home to the USAF's 307th Bombardment Group and also the 2d Bombardment Group.
It wasn't until 15th January 1960 that the 48th Tactical Fighter Wing made Lakenehath their new home. LR, LS and LT were the tail codes for the base with the F-100's but when they transitioned to the Phantom, a temporary tail code of LK was introduced until a few months later it changed once more to LN, which is active today.
In 1977 a fourth squadron joined Lakenheath's 48th, the 495th Tactical Fighter Squadron. They were known as the "Thundervarks" flying the F-111's. However, they deactivated in 1991. They also sported the green tail flash.
In 1991, The 48th Tactical Fighter Wing was redesignated as the 48th Fighter Wing. This included the 'Tactical' title being dropped on the squadrons too. The 495th disbanded with the retirement of the F-111 in that year but returned 30 years later in 2021 with the F-35A.

Oii oiii Ladies, gents and teddy bears We hope you enjoyed this awesome F-15QA departure with a quick climb. Would you like the F-15EX to be stationed at Lakenheath one of the Squadrons to replace the F-15E? Or would you like both F-15E and F-15EX? Don't forget that the EX does not "Fweep". Let us know in the comments.
Did you see the sink when he put flaps up? Need to be quicker with the trim and/or back pressure on the stick. The pilot must be a filthy casual 😝
@@TedConingsby I think the F-15EX wd be welcome at Lakenheath at any time. 😎
Just keep the Jet there that keep you yelling Oh Yeah 😂
Saw an F15 do a climb like that at an airshow in oklahoma probably 20 years ago. Awe inspiring to watch. They also had a flyby of a B1 bomber. My god it was loud.
When I was deployed a B-1 that was departing home inverted then went supersonic over the airfield. You don't realize how large and fast they are until you are next to them.
Great footage. Love the colour scheme on the F15. Awesome aircraft….still.
The thrust to weigjt ratio on those F15’s is insane.
Morning Ted and Nikos, hope you have a fab day! Just got my 12 month badge today,so happy! Take care Rachael xx
Oiii oiii congratulations for reaching your 1st year with the TCS! Thank you so much for this wonderful support ooooh yeah
@@TedConingsby 🥰🥰🥰
I used to love working on here and Mildenhall as a contractor about 20 years ago, it’s weird going on the bases as it’s like you are in America, you have to pay in dollars at the shops and fast food outlets on site.
Brilliant as always. Excellent flying and camerawork to match!
oiii oiii Jan thank you so much. These USAF Boeing Test pilots are awesome
What an Astounding aircraft that is! F15 with added beast mode. Slightly quieter than previous variants. No less ooouummmphh! Light my fire..Lets Fly! Loved seeing this ❤️
Ummh anyone notice the filming? 😅😅 joyous! And excitement 😆 Hughly entertaining 😄 😂❤
Oiii oiii thanks Dan. This is a cool F15 variant
Wow.... What a machine that thing is.. Pure power!!!
That's what you get when you have engineer's listen to a experienced fighter jock for the USAF.
Absolutely gorgeous !
Very steady camera work. Well done!
And of course the F-15 never disappoints.
Ooohhh yeah thank you
WE. R so fortune in our part of UK "lincs,Norfolk" to c these & other awesome planes every single day .🥰
Oii to the Oii oiii ted nice video and i think this is a variant of the Strike Eagle 🇺🇸🇻🇮🇬🇧
Would you mind filming a few more quick climbs with less zoom please? I think they look even more impressive when you can see the ground as well.
Oii oiii, zooming out does give you the speed in which they climb for sure. This is why on our live streams during ALL quick climbs, we mix it up with zoomed in and out shots. In fact, we even have a 2 in 1 shot.
Lv the vids. Keep em coming.
@@TedConingsby Nice!
@@TedConingsby
It doesn’t take much to impress you, does it?
I was stationed at Offutt Air Force Base in Omaha, NE. and watched several aircraft go absolutely vertical at the end of the runway!!!
Not 1.5 miles from the end of the runway!!!
I was stationed at LSAA Anaconda in Baladd Iraq in 2004 and I was driving the unit’s bus past the airfield when an F-16 went vertical right off the end of the runway directly above the bus I was driving(there were at least 5 people on that bus at that time)!
Those same F-16’s would rock our building that we were billeted in which also sat at the end of one of the runways on that base(the base itself was a air field for the Iraqi military before we got there)!!!
If this video depicts “unrestricted” takeoff, I’d hate to see what is considered restricted!
Agreed.
Those 'Turkey Feathers' on the nozzles must help reduce drag! 👍🏻
@@Peter-Oxley-Modelling-Lab Hello Peter. I believe from reference books that the turkey feathers tended to fall off due to heat/ high speeds during missions; it's cheaper to remove them instead of the cost to keep replacing them. With or without turkey feathers, any opposer would be turkey fodder against the beast of the skies.
@@stomper12000 They left them off because they serve no purpose that far aft on the jet as far as aerodynamics are concerned. Not because they "fall off". These are GE engines and have not been approved to fly without them.
this is when the F15E drivers knock at the squadron commander´s door, hand over the keys and say good bye
So Glad me and keeno Send it hung around to see this Awesome Aircraft, Nice work @ Nikos and Ted Coningsby OOH YEAH
Oiii oiii Ian 🤙🏼
Yay! Nozzle covers!
Wish I was occupying that empty back seat😢 Gen 4 teen series forever!!
Très jolie prise
Thank you
Wow!
🇺🇸❤️🇬🇧
I wonder what they have now that we have not seen or can’t see.
New aircraft are always being developed tested and produced in its YF status. When happy, they will release it
An F-15 that sounds like an F-14B/D...
A quick climb from an F-15QA you say? Oh, go on then! Did I hear a little Fweep just before it landed or was that my Lakenheath tinnitus?
Oooohhhh yeah. This was awesome Si and in the morning, we were live at Lakenheath. The video uploaded was the demo at RIAT of this very aircraft and my words were “please come to Lakenheath and do a quick climb”. And so it did…
Wow
Says the F15qa is the most advanced variant of F15's.
“One of the most” not “the most”
What is eing carried on the center station?
This is a LEGION POD, a latest and greatest Infrared track and search pod
Is this Quatar Airways? 🤣
They have new actuators ….can’t hear them
GE engine not Pratt & Whitney on this so yeah new ones that don’t fweep
That was a bit boring compared to a Eurofighter Typhoon unrestricted climb which because of its superior thrust to weight ratio would be dissapering into the clouds. It takes them around 12 seconds from brake release to be already on thier way vertical and gear retracted. Ive seen it done. The Typhoon never fails to impress in the vertical mode.
The noise is incredibly loud, Love it.
Actually, it’s 8 seconds. Each aircraft is different and unrestricted climbs are never boring
@@TedConingsby
Realy, i didnt think it was that quick. I was free counting in my head though. I counted after brake release untill gear up and going vertical.
Wow thats even more impressive than i thought.
😳😳😳😳👍👍
And that’s from brakes to 8 seconds. Will initially pull 60 degrees first (depending on pilot). The Typhoon can also perform a quick climb but it may reach the moon
Looks like it’s from the Qatar Emiri Air Force.
It’s FOR the QEAF, flown by Boeing USAF pilot.
Jesus. Does Qatar ever gets its plane or will Boeing keep flying it around to display? 😂
I was thinking the same thing lol
An F15 on roids
Can you imagine a job where you have your own personal fighter and you travel around the world showing off?
"Sending it", the USAFE way. The Quick Climbs are really something else. They put the wow, in wowzeroonie! ❤
@@margobaxter8344 the QA version isnt used by the united states QA stands for Qatari its produced by them theres only 34 in the world.
@@bruddabean1676hello, thank you for the info 😊👍
@@bruddabean1676 it's Qatar Advanced
@@bruddabean1676 FYI, This is a USAF Beoing test pilot Jason ‘Mongoose’ Dotter not a QEAF pilot in this video.
Oiii oiiii Margo pilot Jason ‘Mongoose’ Dotter giving it some!
The F-15 is the Chuck Norris of the fighter world.
Looks good. Flies good. Even does a good quick climb. Just wish they gave the pilots a button so it could still fweep good! Nice capture, Ted and Nikos
Oii Oiii Ellesee thank you so much. Yeah, it is a GE and not Pratt and Whitney engines in the F-15EX and variants. So sadly no Fweep. Amazing we all miss the Fweep
Stunning, never get bored with quick climbs ❤🫡
ooohhhh yeah thanks Captain A
They were here at Soesterberg AFB, N Netherlands from 1978-1994. Damn I miss those times!! Luckely we've got Ted for great content :) OHHH YEAH!!!!!
Just raw power, I love it. F15 has alway been my favorite.
The most advanced F-15QA
That's some speed , And the afterburner

Light it up
EPIC. Will make a great QR (quick response) "jet" in an emergency situation
Wowzeroonie
Oiii oiii thanks Ann
Still such an amazing plane. I saw my first when I was 9 years old in 1979 when my oldest brother was at Luke AFB. It was love at first sight! Who can't love this plane? It just screams fighter. It is also humbling to think about the impact the designers of the F-15 had upon aviation. Many of the original people, my father included who was on the design team at Pratt and Whitney, have passed on. But their contribution is still dominating the skies. What an incredible legacy.
Awesome
I was living in Lakenheath when the F-111 was there many years ago
@@thesirmaddog8209 I was taking flying lessons at Lakenheath in the early ‘80s and had an F111 take off after me. I was in a Piper Tomahawk (very small 2-seat trainer) and the F-111 almost knocked me out of the sky. Huge aircraft for its role. Impressive looking up the tailpipe as it goes by.😉
@@thinkingoutloud6741 We probably there at the same time... but I was 12-16 yrs old at the time my mother was stationed there
@@thesirmaddog8209 Hello neighbor from the past. I was stationed at RAF Mildenhal, and made the short drive to Lakenheath on a regular basis.

Wowzeroonie! I missed this yesterday as I lost my internet connection. Thanks for posting Nikos. Let's Ride!
Oii Oii Lorraine 🤙🏼
That is just WOW.
♥️♥️♥️💯
I first saw the F-15 at Eglin AFB in the early 70's. It's amazing to see it as one the best fighter jets today. Thanks for the video. Great job as always.
oiii oiii that's awesome that you seen the F-15s in the 70s. oooohhhh yeah
@@TedConingsby I saw 2 F16's from Alabama Guard take off together with water standing on the runway in full afterburner back in the 90's. The pilots saw us standing in there in a pretty heavy rain watching so they put on a real show.
This was one of 34 x F-15s for the Qatari Air Force and one of two flown by Boeing pilots at RIAT24.
Ok so I live in an area where our AFB has a busy commercial airport 7 miles away and a Major airport 15 miles away , so commonly the F16's departing will take off and max climb to 10k to transition out of the controlled airspace and get clear of landing commercial traffic.
Well that’s a perfect treat for a Saturday morning! Thanks Nikos
Oiii oiiii thank you and glad you enjoyed
It is the ultimate war bird. A long line of air warriors America has put in the air. All mighty birds of prey. I love this bird of prey. She's big and so ugly she beautiful. She is the only bird that accelerates on its tail like a rocket. And her top speed is classified. But other planes aviators that have faced her all say one thing. You can't catch an eagle. How fitting Americas greatest war bird would be called an EAGLE. She's in her 50s now. And still the plane to beat. ❤❤❤
The F 22 has an even better thrust to weight ratio and can climb straight up while gaining speed too.
@@hisaddle you misread your facts. That is the F15. The F22 hast thrust vectoring. That's how it beat the F23. Wanna see what dick chenny shot down. Google F23. Northrup Grumman
The F-15 is one of the most beautiful machines ever made. When I was a little kid my dad used to take me to the base and we would watch them do touch and go`s. It`s hard to believe that that plane first flew 52 years ago.
I lived at RAF Lakenheath for 4 years (and a year at RAF Watton), went back with USAF in 85. Loved every minute there.
I saw an F15 do that at an air show in Colorado Springs. Pulled up of the runway, pointed it straight up, and lit the afterburners. KABOOM! To like 10,000 ft and about 60 seconds. I told my wife, "How's that for a job. Take your F15 our for a drive on a Sunday afternoon."
Beautiful. Saw this all the time at Osan, Korea when the F-15s were on PARPRO alert. A sight and sound to behold.
Not bad with two bags and a travel pod. The Eagle looks so much cleaner with the turkey feathers installed on the exhaust.
I’m going to ask for one of these for Christmas.🎁
That's my favorite Jet. Trust to weight ratio is amazing!
I can honestly say that the F-15 never gets old it gets better.
That bird can sure get off the ground in a DAMN hurry. Nice video
A staggering machine 50 yrs old and still relevant.
ty P&W
This doesn’t have a Pratt & Whitney engine, it has General Electric F110-229 engines
This plane is absolute 🔥🔥 what a feat of engineering ❤
I came for the bear and stayed for the air show!
Right On Go Army!
Kind of crazy it can do that with external tanks
I do this in my Cessna 172 all the time
104 and 0.....look out, below.
Would love to know the fuel burn for that.
That’s more a rocket than a plane!!
Oh YEAh 👏👏👏👍😎
I watched a f15 go straight up about 45 years ago at holloman afb...i was amazed, heck, i'm still amazed...
Amazing
Best fighter jet ever created.
Whoooooooow!!
Day-AAMMM!!!
The first time I saw an F-15 do that, I was 15 years old. Just for perspective, I am now 64!
Ooohhh yeah nice one and it’s amazing that the F-15 legacy is still going
Very nice ! 👍🍀
My opinion and personal review and assessment of the F-15 QA is its renowned for its exceptional vertical climb ability as you saw in the video.. it's Superior capabilities is attributed to its phenomenally powerful P&W engines and advanced airframe design. Equipped with two Pratt & Whitney F100-PW-220 engines, each producing 23,830 pounds of thrust each, the aircraft boasts a significant thrust-to-weight ratio, enhancing its performance.
4:28 ..In addition to its climbing capabilities, the F-15 QA excels in agility, speed, and combat effectiveness, making it a formidable presence in aerial engagements. The airframe is designed for high-speed maneuvers, contributing to its overall superiority in the skies. Its combination of thrust-to-weight ratio and advanced aerodynamics allows for exceptional performance in various mission profiles, solidifying its status as a top-tier 4th gen fighter.
Greatest takeoff I ever saw: It was 'War Games Weekend' at Dobbins ARB when they still had F-15s.
Pilot took off and pulled straight up.
He climbed to what the radio call said was 12,000 feet.
He rolled 90 degrees to his right
He pulled back on the stick to go inverted.
Then, he rolled 180 degrees to level, and zoomed off - on altitude and on heading.
Release the Eagle.
The F15 and F16 can withstand more G’s than the pilots, so they would make very challenging OPFOR aircraft without a human on board.
The F-15 platform has and will always be 1 of if not the most iconic and feared airframes in history, since it's debut set the vertical climb bar, and it's extensive weapons payloads layout, it's by far just 1 of the deadliest and most feared aircraft in history, 60 years in service and instead of retirement, it keeps getting upgraded and tweaked to make an already insanely successful aircraft even better. Sure there are other aircraft with great capabilities, but few with the amount of speed, maneuverability and on board weapons s allowing it to be a dogfighter as well as a ground attack aircraft at the same time. I don't think there has ever been a pilot in an enemy of Nato who said, "I can't wait until I get to fight an F-15".
Are those General Electric engines? Sure look like it.
They are indeed
