- This video is a long format one as i go into the specifics of setting up and scaping a small tank (my way), and as a gift for a 12 year old boy who desperately wanted a fish tank of his own.
Matt from Duthie aquatics jumped in and helped and we get a quick tour of his place and im very grateful for his support, as is Juan and his family.

This is one of the nicest videos that I have seen. We get to see that the future of our hobby is bright with young people like Juan getting an experienced mentor, so that they start off on the right foot. Then seeing a great shop keeper, and shop. My aging heart has been warmed.

Great video. To share your love of the hobby with someone else is a beautiful thing. This young man will carry this experience with him and hopefully when he's older he'll do the same.

Hey Adrian! That's a really neat project. And hopefully we've got the newest member (or maybe members) of the Multiple Tank Syndrome Club. 🙂 I'm looking forward to seeing an update on this in a couple months. I think the first time I saw Matt's place was on a @KeepingFishSimple interview/tour video? He really has quite a good thing going. And that was a great thing for him to do. @@AdriansFishroom Fair enough, hehe! I made a tank for a little chap a couple days ago (children’s day), so I can relate, lol. 🤣 I only wish I met someone as knowledgeable back when I was a kid. I lot of fish would have been so much more happy. Looking back, I’m still amazed I managed to keep both tropical and local fish (mostly cold water here in Romania), even if only for a couple weeks, alive in a bare bottom, filterless aquarium, with no water changes, while they where fed mostly bread and the ocazional worm/bug that happened to cross paths with me.

Can I ask why you leave the water for a week after adding the dechlorinator? What would be the difference between dechlorinated water that's minutes old versus dechlorinated water that's a week old?
That’s a great question.
The reason, I like to leave the water to age for the week in natural sunlight, as it allows time for all of the chemicals, both the chlorine and the de chlorinator to de gas and escape and break down naturally in the sun before adding it to the tank inside. The week will also allow for the water to start to age and grow bacteria and be alive when it goes into the tank as opposed to sterilized and dead from the tap

The fish is called a Betta (Bet-Tah) not a Beta (Bay-Tuh).
Here is a quick google explanation...
*English-speakers often pronounce betta as "bay-tuh", after the second letter in the Greek alphabet. However, it is believed the name is derived from the Malay word ikan betta, with ikan meaning "fish" and bettah referring to an ancient warrior tribe, which is pronounced "bet-tah"*
If you can help spread this, it would be a great way to bring some light to the subject of how opinions can sometimes be conflated into "facts". Although just a trivial topic in relation to these fish, there are many of these misconceptions related to the hobby.

I enjoyed this video very much and am tempted to go to my nearest K-Mart to get started. The only thing you did that I can’t copy is that you had a sponge filter already loaded with bacteria. What can I do to cycle the tank if I get a new sponge filter?
Sweet go for it… and if you don’t have another tank to soak it in, take a bucket of water and drop it into that for a week and leave it in the sun…preferably “dirty” water from another aquarium or even rainwater would work.🙏❤️🇦🇺🙌🏻💪🏻🦘🐶

Nothing more disheartening than parents who come into the shop and leave with a disappointed youngster because they can't be bothered to dechlorinate the water
Yep, I definitely agree and hopefully this easy style of set up and weekly maintenance regime will change some parents minds and I will encourage the kids to get into the hobby that is truly amazing.🙏🐶❤️🦘🇦🇺💪🏻
