  • Three months after they tangled in the Kentucky Derby, the country's prize 3-year-old colts staged their return match in the $1 million Travers Stakes today, and the top three contenders were outrun dramatically by an outsider, Corporate Report.
It was a tour de force for Corporate Report, who ran ninth in the Derby, second in the Preakness and fourth in the Belmont Stakes. On this muggy afternoon before 48,170 spectators at old Saratoga Race Course, he led almost wire to wire, fought off a rousing challenge from Hansel in the homestretch and beat him in a photo finish by the margin of a neck.
Two and a half lengths back in third place came Fly So Free, last year's juvenile champion, and three lengths back in fourth place was the favorite, Strike the Gold, who won the Derby but lost today for the fourth straight time. And this time, he lost with new gold-and-white colors and a new jockey, Angel Cordero Jr.
So, the year's chase for ultimate honors remained more scrambled than ever. And to complicate matters even more, Hansel, the winner of the Preakness and Belmont, closed the race with a tendon injury in his left front leg and was driven back to his barn in a horse ambulance.
His jockey, Jerry Bailey, said that "he took a few funny steps in the homestretch." The chief veterinarian, Dr. Ted Hill, reported later: "He's a little sore, but not terribly. It appears to be, at this point, a low tendon injury."
Racing has been chancy for Hansel since he first showed signs of pulmonary bleeding last March, and since then he has been taking the medication Lasix, except in New York State, where it is banned. But no signs of bleeding were detected this time.

The good old days of horse racing. I fell in love with horse racing in the 80s.

      Buenas tardes.
      Saludos desde Venezuela 🇻🇪

Hansel is one of my all time favorites. He was injured in this race and never ran again. Good to see the "old" Jeff Lukas, in his prime.

I was lucky enough to know Corporate Report when he was a stallion at Pin Oak Lane farm where my mom worked when I was a child. He was a very gentle horse and very easy to work with. I also owned one of his sons that is now a very successful eventer. Brings back memories. Very sad that he and Hansel never ran again, but at least Corporate Report could end his career with that elusive G1 win.

      Me too!
It’s 8/26/2021; and I’m at the pony on the main track at the Saratoga Springs race track waiting for the Travers stakes to be run on 8/28/2021.
I’m a night watch man for a horse trainer ; and I like large fields for the Travers stakes; this year’s Travers stakes has only seven runners.

I liked them also although Mckay tended to step on Johnson’s calls at the end.

I still remember talking my dad into betting this horse. I was a teen/college kid I forget, but remembered a race or two before this in the Triple Crown races, Corporate Report had smoked to the lead and was burned up it a hot pace. As I was breaking down the race, I saw he would get away and no one was going with him. Even Bailey panicked early and put Hansel way too close to win. We were having a bad day until that race and asked my dad if he had some cash, to pound him. I win up and got my poor boy $10 on him, Dad showed me his ticket after the race, $50 to win on the 4. I knew Hansel was NEVER going by. That 47 and change second half mile won the race right there, he went 45 flat 6 weeks before. McCarron in his prime.

Hansel really peaked in the spring, during the triple crown races. He’s never quite the same after the Belmont. I think that was as good as he was going to get. Corporate Report started to get better and this is the result. Hansel strained his tendon trying to pass a horse he was never going to pass.

I should have waited until the whole video finished before commenting. After all these years, I forgot that Hansel's injury was part of the broadcast.

Strike the Gold was a prime example of how people overrate the Derby. This horse was treated as the darling once he crossed the Churchill wire. Before Dervy, Fly So Free was the big deal. But all year we’d be treated to STG shown as the golden boy, though he usually lost. Handel didn’t get the respect he deserved. This race, here STG the favorite again, good God.

Good horses, but no NORTHERN DANCER, in this race, horses from MAN O WAR, to CITATION, to the DANCER, dont compare.
