I'm a parts & service guy for another US manufacturer of dozer. A few observations that I can make, for what they're worth are: - A winch is a good sign, they're an expensive add on for a machine so when this thing was purchased, somebody cared about it. - The sweeps and ROPS are also a good sign, somebody tricked this thing out and was also concerned about safety. This is assuming that the cage is actually a ROPS and not just a mad max style anti-branch system which is still pretty cool anyway. - The hardest parts to get for this thing are probably transmission parts. Hopefully you don't need any because you might be making them yourself and/or reverse engineering them if you do. You seem like a bright dude so you probably already knew this stuff but, if it helps, awesome. I'm looking forward to seeing your rebuild on this thing. I saw the finger/drill video already, I can relate. LOL! Good luck man!
A little bit of foreshadowing with the transmission parts! Great to see he got it back up and running though. And for less than $15k. I'd have said he could have at least doubled that estimate at the beginning!

Hyster is off 217. 73rd st exit. Use to rebuild starters, alternators and winch motors for them. That winch is big money. Been a while but think we use get 3-4 k to overhaul one.
Oops I started watching on the winch tear down then had to back up. You were so optimist on day one..Spoiler that might change. Lol. I just want to know how much you paid for it and what you thought you might have to put into it. I'll have to wait for the finish to find out how it all ends up and if you have a smile on your face. Ya gotta have a slight masochistic personality to take on a restoration like this one but that's just a sign you have an old school "fix not trash" gungho spirit that made America great once upon a time.
There are a million used bulldozers for sale. So fixing this piece of scrap could not possibly make financial sense. Maybe the RUclips traffic pays the bills. Who knows?
I'm guessing you are correct, I bought a case dozer 25 years newer for less then that and all i have into is fuel, fluids,filters cylinder seals and batteries

Those are usually just cotter pins that are the drains for the winch and both of the final drives under the bull gears. Better pull the caps off the bottoms of the drives and see if they are full. You can Clean the drives and the brake frictions by filling it up with diesel and driving it. Pulling on the brake levers.
My guess is the blade looks to be off a D4C model. I have never seen a factory blade on a D4 7U series. They weren't built with an external frame so the blade mounts and cylinders were put on the track frames, rather than a "hardnose" radiator surround. The electric start option is interesting as the flywheel housings on the ones I have been around were not bored for a starter.
I just watched the video refitting the hydraulic pump. Did you know when you bought it that you were going to strip it down to every single bit and bolt?

Hyster was founded in 1929 as the Willamette-Ersted Company in Portland, Oregon. It sold in the 1980's to NACCO Industries. Did you hear banjos playing through through the trees as you drove into that location?

I suspect that the tractor is newer than the engine. It has the curved steering clutch levers. It is confusing to me because the D4 I have had for 30 years is 7U18xxx and has the curved levers. The D4 I bought at an auction recently is 7U22xxx and has straight levers like the early ones. My rear serial is accessable and matches the engine.
Anything is possible, it definitely has a few other retrofits on it so it could be a newer machine, or it could just have replacement parts slapped on. The tilt blade is definitely not original I think. The plate on the winch does say 1950 though. Thanks for watching and for the comment.
I Have a 49 D4 7 U 5382 and a 1940 7J narrow guage. That maching with the seat tank and curved levers looks like a 55 to me. The lever on the far right is the winch controls.
I beleave the D4 7u. Was created to pull the Old cable cans. Scraper. . The back wench is a give away . This. Damn stroke. I had back in April. Has slowed my memory.

Can anyone confirm the trail jack did anything??? Not discounting the trail jack by no means but didn't look like Matt jacked it up too far and it looked to me like the winch got it rolling pretty easy. I have to get a 1960 D4C rolling that has been sitting 22 years, on rail-road ties, that have slowly sunk into the ground. I feel good about it and believe it will roll with a little help from a winch.
So any time you're using a tree like that put the strap as close to the ground as you can get it. You loose leverage real fast the farther up the tree you move it.
You call that weed whacking all respect it don't even look like you did anything when I go around vehicles or equipment I take a rake and pull everything away again wish you the best of luck God bless you and you're calling the guy a hoarder in the video
I paid $2500 for my D4-7U about 12 years ago.... it was running and driving but with pony motor and hydraulic pump problems... and other small problems but all the parts are there and it has the same winch. I have been told that these were common with the winch up here in the PNW because they were used in logging. Mine was about 50 miles west of Spokane. It has sat unused/unrepaired because of personal health problems but I'm going too get it going this year. Need to use it. Mine has a different blade setup with manual tilt and left to right angle and different (I think) up and down hydraulic cylinder setup. All my hard lines look just like yours but my winch is hard lines too (pretty sure). An old friend who sadly passed a year ago was very well familiar with these and he said that the weight from the winch on the rear makes them plow out level road cuts better. How does the hydraulic pump come off/out? Thanks for the videos! LOL I'm glad you haven't seen my property! Im a collector. there is a difference. A collector you can walk around their stuff. A hoarder you must climb over piles of garbage to find the buried stuff.
I have 40 7J mines a narrow gauge with a homebuilt cab and a tree pusher. Really tight old rig good undercarrage and no leaks. I would like to have that winch! I also have a wide gauge 49 7U its not any good I paid $2000 for it in 78 and its never been any count money pit I worked on it more than I ever got to use it.
$30K??? Please explain this as I have just bought one myself. Like Matt though, I don't plan to do a complete restore, just get it running and what is broken repaired or replaced, and obviously catch up on maint. items.

Till cyl, not angle. An yhecposition of the throttle lever did NOT let the fuel go into the crank case

The broken spring is under engine running to each track frame.

They didn't use the hyster winch for scrapers,they used a double drum made by caterpillar.
I don't catch that poison stuff, Oak, ivy, sumac and I don't know why. I don't think my grandmother did either.

get a flat bed. that is how a moved a big forklift last month. they will hook up a wench and load it up. not hard at all
