Ian. Thanks for the response. I was just watching through your play lists and saw this video and was like "Hey, I need to know this." Then I heard my Tag and was like WOW he responded to my question. And for wondering minds, this name was a Gamer Tag when I use to play Call of Duty a lot. I like it and it just stuck with me. I really appreciate all the information in this video and have been watching my opponent more (Body position, where the ball hits on the court, their position on the court) to see tendencies and how to best position myself for the next return. Thanks again and keep up the good work.

I think knowing proper, effective recovery positions based on the target landing area of your own shot is crucial to reading the ball from your opponent earlier. This knowledge when practiced results in muscle memory which allows you to be in the best court position to return your opponent's shot and allows you to concentrate on watching the ball come off your opponent's racket, allowing you to quickly determine whether it's going to your backhand, forehand, deeper, or shorter and to immediately begin to prepare, by moving into your hitting position, turning early, and getting your racket ready to return the ball as early as possible.
I think the biggest factor in "reading the ball early" is seeing where the ball is going as it comes off your opponent's racket AND doing something to prepare IMMEDIATELY, not waiting until the ball is crossing the net before beginning to respond. I've seen a good drill about calling out "forehand" and "backhand" according to where you determine the ball is going just as it leaves your opponent's racket and turning and moving immediately to respond, not calling then turning. This drill will help a player focus on the ball's direction and depth and to practice preparing immediately to return the shot for the best advantage. This will teach both reading the ball and doing something about it early.
I do like your idea of identifying your opponent's shot comfort level and shot type. That's always useful info as a match unfolds.

Love this video! Our usta team struggles in doubles with anticipation especially reading the lob. Do you ever look away from your opponent (when the ball is in their side) to their racquet or even the ball or do you just watch the opponent? Can't wait to try this out!

Ian, looks like you've really elevated your production. I'm a videographer, so I'm checking out your set-up--that's quiet a large space. Are those Photoflex boxes, Chimeras? Anyway, nice set up. BTW, I didn't know you're actually allowed to watch the ball. I should try it sometime (or maybe not all the time, according to your guidance).

Great info Ian. I will try this out the next time I play.
How about returning serves? Do you just watch the ball the whole time or do you also look at the server?

hey Ian , love the videos you guys do.Just a question about staying focused in a match . During practice and coaching sessions in particular I'm generally tuned in and focused and never have an issue with lack of concentration . however recently when competitions and match plays come around I always tend to struggle maintaining focus and end up switching off for a period of time. in several incidences , if I win the first set comfortably, I notice my performance and concentration drops and in most incidences I would be 5-2 down in the second set before I manage to regain my concentration and sometimes winning out the set 7-5 . do you have any advice or tips that can help to maintain the concentration throughout the match ? I know I'm not always going to be able to win matches by leaving my opponent get back into the game after gaining an early lead and trailing from behind towards the end . thanks

I usually know where my opponent is going to put the ball. The problem on my end is synaptic delay.

    Hey Ian,
so if people can read my shot early, is there any way that I can disguise my shot and fool my opponent?
