Alot of people miss that Doughboy's view and commentary on women stemmed from the toxic and abusive relationship he had with his mother.

It's not a masterpiece of cinema, but it is a masterpiece of good storytelling.
I've always liked the film and it is really good, but it has many flaws, it is also very preachy and also very simplistic in how it approaches the problems of the time....but it also made a great impact and involves real feelings of both despair and hope. It is also very funny as well as being very timely and it has actually aged very well.
The weaknesses and flaws in the film can be attributed to Singleton's youth and inexperience at the time, while the excellent parts, can also be credited to him for having the intelligence, courage and vision to bring a wonderful story to the screen himself at such a young age.
It's not a masterpiece but it is a very solid and very respectable 8.25 out of 10 for me.
It will always be Singleton's best picture and he never came anywhere near equaling the heart, humor, honesty, impact and drama again.
Though he had many further movies, he had only one truly important story to tell....Boyz N The Hood.....and he deserves all the credit for telling it so well.
Sometimes, your first thing is your best thing.

I didn't cry when I first saw this in the theater but I was dang well close to it. Everyone else in the theater was bawling their eyes out. It took everything I had to hold it in. I was 15 years old then. I was living in Georgia when I saw it but I was born in L.A. and related so much to this movie living and seeing what happens on those streets as a kid. Besides seeing Murphy get killed in Robocop this was one of the most shocking deaths in movie history I had seen.

This movie is the quintessential hood classic. This was the first coming of age movie i first saw this in theaters at the age of 10 years old while i was visiting family in Fresno, California. Rewatching this as an adult i realize that Ricky wasn’t street smart due to him being coddled by his mother. He laughed at Trey when Trey told him that he was afraid to have sex, he was scared when Furious took them to Compton & he didn’t take Ferris & his crew serious when they coming for him. Brenda favoritism towards Ricky did more damage to Doughboy than the hood ever did & Brenda lost both of her sons as a result of her favoritism. The scene when the self hating crusty lip ass cop pull the gun on Trey gave him chills. Of course the scene when Ricky was killed & when Doughboy avenged Ricky’s death gave me chills as well.
Fun Facts: Will Smith was offered the role of Trey but declined due to The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.

1: at 12:28 the woman on the right with the striped shirt is Yolanda "Yo-Yo" Whittaker. She played CJ's sister in the video game Grand Theft Auto San Andreas, give her music a listen.
2: Doughboy and Ricky are half brothers, same mom different dads. It's implied that Doughboys father wasn't a good guy and she took her anger out on him
3: With regards to all the guns. In the beginning of the 80's the ATF division of the USA government had a MASSIVE budget cut, so if one gun cost about $400 in the last 70's, by the end of the 80's. That same gun was less than $100.

This movie came out when i was in high school. I liked everything about the movie except for Cuba Gooding’s performance. Everyone else, killed it except for the lead. He didn’t not come off as a dude from So. Central, LA. And the fact that Laurence Fishborne is only 6 years older than Cuba Gooding. 😂 They make fun of it in the Wayans bros “Don’t be a menace….”

    • @USCFlash
      @USCFlash 7 месяцев назад +2

Yeah I agree...I thought Nia Long was pretty poor as well.
I actually thought the Fishburne/Gooding age gap looked ok....he was only 17 (as he says in the film) when he had Tre, and Fishburne has an older "look" and though Gooding was 23 and Fishburne was 30 at the time, Gooding did look a bit younger, I definitely bought "18" in high school for him.
But his performance was another matter. I have never thought he was a good actor....but in all fairness, I am not sure who else they could have cast in 1990 when they started filming....there were not that many young and upcoming black dramatic actors on the scene yet, who had the acting chops to pull it off, as well as future "big screen potential" and being marketable.
The fact that Will Smith was considered at the time, should illustrate the dearth of that type of talented young black dramatic actor who they were hoping to find.
At the time, the tons of young black people coming in to to the film-acting end of entertainment were comedic types (Chris Rock, Several Wayans brothers, Chris Tucker etc) or rappers trying to get in on the acting action (Ice Cube, Ice T, LL COOL J, Tupac, etc)
The rappers wound up taking tons of the best roles that should have gone to talented young actors....but there were not so many around, unfortunately, and with rappers being cast, studios felt comfortable that they might help bring in $$$ to risky projects that had limited big market appeal.

yeah true he wasn't even a name then....some minor stuff....but he did have his dad's name as the "claim to fame" so to speak.
So he basically had like a speck of a name more than any other young, upcoming, black dramatic actors of the time.
Like I said, for many years i racked my brains trying to come up with someone, anyone from that time period who could have taken the role, and based on the lack of talent at the time, there was truly nobody else. (except for an even more total unknown than Cuba)
Maybe Malcolm Jamal Warner at the time....but i think even though he was only 20 or so, he was a much bigger name than Cuba.....but he was already a bit typecast from The Cosby Show

When Treys mom told his dad ‘mothers have been doing what you did forever’ was completely wrong-
Moms raise babies into childhood, dads raise children into adulthood-
That’s why 70% of prisoners come from single mother homes, 80% of drug addicts, 80% of homeless, 70% of drop outs… come from single mother homes-
Until we realize that single motherhood is the foundation of almost all our societal problems, we will continue to be where we’ve been since the 70’s
Marvin Gaye’s music from the 60’s/70’s is just as relatable now as it was back then-
And this isn’t about putting moms down, fathers must step up, but moms have to let them too

Among the best things I love about Boyz n The Hood is Doughboy for his character and story development and Ice Cube’s performance in the role.
Cube at the time was among the emerging hip-hopers in the 90s with his debut solo album AmeriKKKa’s Most Wanted after leaving NWA.
The guy may not have had attended drama class in school, never did a film, never did a TV show or a stage show but it was the encouragement from John Singleton due to their friendship that convinced Cube to get the part of Doughboy.
John Singleton met Ice Cube when he was a member of backstage crew at the Arsenio Hall Show and even though Cube turned down the offer a couple times, I’m beyond glad he accepted the offer.
For an inexperienced actor in a cinematic debut, Ice Cube did an awesome job playing Doughboy. He played the role as if he (Cube himself) never had a dad, is the subject of ridicule and verbal abuse by his mum who favours a brother of his and ends up as as a Rollin 60s Crip. He did it so damn convincingly that he should’ve got an Oscar, a BAFTA, a Golden Globe - all three for “Best Supporting Actor” and MTV Movie Award for “Best Breakthrough Performance”.
This was long before Cube did the Friday films (film series he also wrote/produced), Are We There Yet?, xXx 2 and 3, Fist Fight, Ride Along, 21/22 Jump Street, Ghost of Mars, the Barbershop films, Rampart, Tresspass etc
If the Marc Webb-directed and Andrew Garfield-starred Amazing Spider-Man films were to conclude with a 3rd film (a 4 hour 3rd film to end the story) and if Ice Cube appeared in it - he would’ve been J Jonah Jameson (Daily Bugle newspaper boss). Imagine Andrew Garfield and Ice Cube in the same room! Wasted/missed opportunity in my opinion.

You seem so true to yourself and passionate in your beliefs and I have mad respect for that in any person. I look forward to watching more of what you upload. Thank you for doing this! I loved every minute of it! 🤗👍
Editing because I posted before the 35:00 mark. Now like I told you, I saw this when it came out and it’s one of my favs, so you know I’ve watched it A LOT over the years. (I bought it as soon as it came out on VHS!) And I still cry at those moments when Ricky gets shot, Trey and his dad with the gun, and when Ricky’s mom opens up his SAT score. And also when he gets out of the car and his dad stopped spinning those silver balls. Their bond is amazing. John Singleton was a master at his trade! Poetic Justice, Higher Learning, Hustle & Flow, Four Brothers, and even Michael Jackson’s video Remember the Time, along with his L.A. Riots documentary. I’ve seen and loved them all. RIP John…..your legacy still stands tall and strong with the amazing work you left behind. 🙏💕

If all you dealt with as a black cop in Compton was black on black gang violence, you'd feel the same way after awhile. You'd develop the same predudices over time.

Lawrence Fishburne and Cuba Gooding are only seven years apart. But I tell you ... I never looked at any of them and thought, "This is unreal. He/She is too young to be the parent!" When the acting is good, you buy it.

When i first watch this i was like there was no way they gonna shoot the main character but dang they proved me wrong & with a double barrel shot gun too. Damn dude who are you Elmer Fudd?! A double Barrel shotgun is crazy bruh, thats no ordinary gun you wanted to make a statement or prove a point. I get why they had to unalive ricky cause besides tre, his dad, or Brandi nobody really would've cared that they got shot down which sounds bad but it's honest. I get the message tho.
A bullet has no name or feelings only the people that's holding it does

a few things come to mind honestly
      1) he was already dead
      2) people react to extreme mental anguish very irrationally, and don't always make the best decisions
      3) if they were to call 911, it probably would not even be acknowledged, given the time period, and the location of where they are
      4) whenever the bodies of the deceased dudes (the ones that shot ricky) are collected, it would likely be very easy to trace back to doughboy and the others, given that the police would have record on both groups of people
