The lowered main riff, the recurring guitar solo, Lars randomly syncopating stuff and even Reed's improvised vocal melodies, this version is stupid good. Masterpiece.

That's not what the OP meant. They're well aware their place in the annals of music is below Lou.
But at the time Lou Reed was not doing anything. Maybe kinda stagnant. Hell maybe he was simply tired(those days from all that partying had to have taken their toll lol).
They were just honoring a man they greatly admired and providing a huge stage for him to once again showcase whatever he had left. The fans loved it.
      Well, the educated ones anyway.

I agree with Mike in that I'm confused about all the negativity about this video. I LOVED it! Lou Reed was a bit before my time; I have always loved Judas Priest, Boston, Scorpions, Black Sabbath, Metallica & such, & felt all the music
from Lou Reed's generation that was called 'Rock & Roll' sounded more like 'Country' (just not hard hitting enough). That being said, the first time I saw this when it aired on TV, I LOVED it! Metallica's, & lead singer James Hetfield's strong bass & vocals which command you to 'bang your head' in my opinion, were the perfect choice to perform with Lou Reed here. I think I already knew the title 'Sweet Jane' done by Lou Reed, but I'd never heard it before. This version of 'Sweet Jane' since first airing is one of my most played now on my playlist. James seems to really throw himself into providing his well known, hard-hitting vocals as back-up for Lou, yet was not trying to out-do Lou on his own song. This match-up suddenly made Lou Reed's 'Sweet Jane' relatable for me, & I loved it immediately. And, when I first saw it, I was immediately filled with warm, fuzzy feelings - it is a beautiful thing when a popular musician of a current decade, lends their talents to another (once popular) and definitely older musician & allow them to become relevant to later generations, as well. To see one musician show this kind of love for a fellow musician - there's that warm, fuzzy feeling. I wish these two would have got together & produced a studio version of this song as well. LOVED IT!!!
