Sad that you thought the story was underwhelming, I think it has some great stuff. I do think the presentation largely sells it but the lore behind the basic story fascinates me. This was a great video, can’t wait for more from you!
I think maybe future Team Cherry games might captivate me more in terms of story. But also my enjoyment of the story depends on whether or not you include the character stories. If you do, then the story isn't really underwhelming anymore. But I'm glad you liked the vid anyhow!

@@Cinnacalyou haven't gotten deeper into the games story yet, you need to watch videos and such to understand more of the lore and speculation on it. The story is not as bland as you think.
The story and lore are wonderfully deep and complex, but it took me actively looking at out of game sources to really fill in the details. I think Team Cherry may have leaned a little *too* far into hiding the lore and story in subtle ways, which is something I appreciate, but I think it came at the cost of the players that don't spend hundreds of hours searching and decoding not really getting to experience just how amazing it all is. The game is nearly flawless, so I'm hoping Team Cherry can tweak a few of the super small things from HK that weren't perfect and work them into Silk Song. :)

Whenever I come across a small channel with very good videos I check to see how often they upload and if it’s at least twice a month, I subscribe. If you upload more I’m pretty sure your channel will get big enough to make a living off of.
I got this on Switch last week and 30 hours later I am completely hooked! It's kicking my ass and frustrating as hell at times, but it's so refreshingly hard, and so refreshingly doesn't hold your hand at all. I love it!
I started the game 2 times until now, played 5 hrs in the first and 3 hrs in my second, but there was that feeling that made me stop playing both times, I think I should give it another chance because I keep hearing great stuff about it and really wanna get into it. Also very good review, and I can see the quality writing in the script.
@The Pack ok, sorry, I really hate when people overhype games that do not deserve such acclaim.. Yeah, it's alright, but I dont like the childish tone and character/enemy design, repetitive design, dull color and how punishing it seems to be.
@@wallacesousuke1433 I think its less that the game is trash, and more that the game isn't for you. If a game is loved by so many people, its impossible for it to be trash, no matter how much YOU don't like it.
For all that I love about the game, it could definitely have used more platforming challenges, for sure. I DO think I prefer the way the game presented the story though. There was much more of a focus on 'lore' than 'plot' and while I can understand why that might bother people, it's a pretty unique approach to story telling and for me, it fit perfectly with the exploration elements and theme of the game for there to just be constant tidbits of forgotten lore that you can sort of piece together into a backstory (that is very much up to interpretation) rather than a fully-developed plot (which I can get from so many countless other games), but that might just be me.
I have watched a lot of videos recommending this game, and you've managed to bring up things about the visual design that no one else did, and gave them a funny but insightful name in "I Hate People Aesthetics", good job.
I like the shorter video format. Thought the sound from this recording location was just as good but if you like the other recording location more, just go visit it and then you could record.
I got Hollow knight for my sister for Christmas because I had it as a games for Playstation plus a while ago and didn't have it at the time, I have gotten Playstation Plus again recently and have gotten into it and I have played it a few days and have gotten further than my sister
I had the same problem with DnD character creation, but my friend who DMs us the most absolutely LOVES homebrew, so he makes sure that we know we can use homebrew races, which is why my first DnD campaign, I played a sentient corgi that was unable to talk. I am currently playing a fallen asimar that's only fallen because he's a massive dickhead.
I just completed my second play through of metroid dread on hard mode and I loved the game play I needed something else so I decided to pick up hollow knight again and I'm going to try to beat it this time.
I know I'm super late to this video, but if you're bored of the stereotypical fantasy experience still, I would recommend Brandon Sanderson's fantasy series, especially the Stormlight Archives. They have some very unique creatures, magic systems and a deep well of lore you could get lost in.
Nice video! I definitely need this, I am replaying Hollow Knight months later. I am slightly enjoying it than before, but I still kind of find it boring. I really want this to be my favorite game! Also, you are incredibly underrated, just subscribed!
No, I played it that one time, barely making progress and found it boring. So I decided to start over at the beginning, since I have a bit of knowledge from when I first played it
@@coulsonknight Hmmm. Maybe Metroidvanias aren't for you? I was hooked within my first hour of playing. I would suggest at least playing until you reach the city of tears because the world really opens up to you at that point and almost triples in size. If you still don't find it fun after that I would suggest giving up.

To be honest, the second fight with Hornet is harder. The Ball of spikes she lives in the air as booby trap gave me a lot of trouble so it took me like 20 minutes or so to defeat her? When I defeated her it was a DOUBL KNOCK OUT! I killed her she killed me. So "MAN I WAS SUCCESSFUL IN DEFEATING HER BUT SHE ALSO KILLED ME I HAVE TO REPEAT THIS FIGHT AGAIN"! I went back to the nearest save point where I saved my game then travelled back to her location to fight her again but she was not there! THIS WAS HOW I GET PAST HER! After this I passed by her place then continued to go to the secret room down below. The first hornet was relatively easy it only took me less than 3 minutes to defeat her with my NOT YET UPGRADED NAIL!

The story of the game IS the journey though, talking to the characters is just as important to the story as the required objectives. If what you classify as story is only things that are required, that would mean no game should ever have ANY optional content. The optionality of the content was intentional, it allows you to create your own story and makes the possibilities of the world feel wider. This isn't really a fault of the game, it's something it objectively does quite well, it just sounds like you want games without optional content.
I'm in love with the atmosphere and style of this game, but I get too easily frustrated with games that are made for skilled gamers. Shooters, platformers, and any real hardcore, high-risk games just make me mad. I really really want to see if this is a game I could still play!!
I am not skilled at all (I literally never game) and gave it a shot to. It was really frustrating at points. But if you can allow yourself to fail it's really worth it.

I really enjoy Hollow knight. There are something’s that are kinda annoying about it. Like the path to upgrading your nail and finding the pale ore. Other than that I really can’t say much negative about it.
D&D was Tolkien changed just enough to not get sued, by super fans. But yeah, everything derives from the trinity of Tolkien, King Arthur, and Robin Hood.

I want to like this game but I couldn’t. The fighting was like two direction. Wish there was more rewards in the item system and a lot more variety of move sets. No voice acting. The scenery and the music was pretty though. Having to buy marker only to show where you are on the map is a joke.

There are plenty of books in the fantasy genre that are really pushing the envelope when it comes to different fantasy races. I think your claim is largely true but in my opinion there's been a renaissance in the fantasy genre over the last decade which has deliberately pushed back against old trends. P.S. this review is top tier and convinced me to pick up the game. Keep making content like this and I'll keep coming back.
I agree with everything you said except for your statement that the story isn't involved. Because of how well they utilize environmental storytelling, the entire game pretty much IS the story. There's so much more to the story than just the main points, and I encourage you to look deeper into the lore as you're playing. It's one of the best parts.
