I don't think you're exactly right with the winter one, if the hot air rises then it's not going to leave the chimney to heat the surrounding space.

The solar chimney is closed in winter to trap the heated air inside as shown in the diagram @2:00

There's a outlet for hot air to move into house interior. Though the rooms in 1st and 2nd floor will be more benefitted.
