I need your WVF6J, converting some r620s from diskless to have h710p mini raid with local disks for a small project. PITA to find the proper internal cables, unless you have kept them all from server rebuilds and recycling from the datacenter!
hi, what is the technical name for this "signal " cable you also connect with the sas and power cables? i got a Chenbro server that doesnt see my drives. got 3 18tb sata drives. it lights up but no detect, i am missing something
I subscribed because I like that you said you buy refurbished, all most all of my electronics are in fact refurbished or bought used, I just ordered A dell R20 16 bay for under 160 :) no ram or hard drives or cpus it looks like it does comes with cpus anys, I may buy A second one next month at that price
Great video. I too have a 4-bay R620 and this is a great guide on how to upgrade to 8 bays. Did you figure out the cable error messages you were getting? Thanks
I have question, for the sas cable you had it connected to the bigger port on the motherboard and not the mini one, how did you configure it to run off of the big one, because recently I bought a backplane with a two headed cable that uses that same port and it powers on, but it won't read the drives🤔
Do you have a PERC card installed. The mini single sas is for the S110 raid software. The larger one requires a mini monolithic Poweredge Raid Controller card installed. Power is supplied to the backplane and drives through the cable that runs between the fans. Not the SAS cables
@@curiouscorpse5450 I don't have a perc card installed, so i just need a perc card for it to read my drives, my original 4 bay backplane used the mini sas port on the motherboard
Correct. The single mini SAS connector only supports 4 drives with the S110 software raid. The H310, H710, or H710P is required for an 8-bay back-plane. They are not that expensive. Just do your research. If you don't need pass through. I would recommend the H710 series since they have build in cache and battery backup. If you do want pass through look on eBay for an H310 that has been flashed with LSI software.
@@curiouscorpse5450 alright I'll definitely do research and look into those cards. Thank you for your help and advice. Your video has been most helpful.
No the S110 software can not. As far as i know the majority of dell raid controllers don't. Dell prefers to have there software or hardware sort all the drives into virtual drives before it gets to any OS. Which is why everybody goes to LSI hardware.
It's not so much that you can't do these upgrades, it's more so that Dell won't do them after purchase. And for most businesses it's either have Dell do it or buy a new one.
appreciate the detail and insight to discover the details of this unit. well done!
This is by far the most in depth overview/tutorial for r620
Thanks. There is more to come. The R620 is a really nice system that I am having alot of fun building up.
@@curiouscorpse5450 And its nicely upgradeable
Thanks to this video, I was able to convert my R620 to 8-bay HD by changing the backplane. Great job explaining the steps.
Did you receive the error?
Clean and clear explanation of each hardware, Nice work !! hope to see much more videos on r620 build :)
I followed the instruction and upgraded my r620 from 4 bay to 8 bay in 5 minutes. Really nice video!
Excellent video great detail

Thanks for the support. Older tech still has its place in the world.
Do you remember the part number for the SAS cables you used? I don't recall hearing it in the video and I'm looking to upgrade my r620.
greatful

BTW I became subscriber #126 :-)
Thanks for the support. I have not found a solution yet for the cables error. I haven't tried another HBA yet.
Can I do this with a r610 and a h810?

Well I got enough money for my h12ssl-ct rig.About $8000 worth of parts.
