Lionel! I feel this on every level, I had two super hot races this summer where I’m pretty sure I was borderline heat exhaustion (shivering/chills) while running. Hearing your struggle and the realities of hot weather racing gives me so much motivation for next year. Thank you for this. Cheering for you in kona 🇨🇦

13:00 - I’m liking what I am hearing at this point of this video. It sounds like you are going to use the ‘disciplined and patient’ approach that put you on the podium at St George earlier this year. In my view - hopefully - a repeat of this approach will see you repeat what you achieved in 2017 at Kona and at St George earlier this year. Unlike 2017, you should even finish as strongly as you did in St George.

Fully understood the Dallas issue. Let's focus on the next one.
Lionel, I'll watch Kona IM exactly until you cross the finish line, no matter if you are in front or last place. Even in the best case, this will be deep, deep in the night here in Germany. So I'm gonna "destroy" my weekend in a way. However you give so much inspiration for the upcoming 52 weeks, so I assume this is a good investment for me personally. Keep up your spirit. 💪

As a person that trains in Houston and Colorado. Dry latitude kills heat adaptation. Also track dewpoint rather than %humidity. Dewpoint should be your skin temp on the bike. hunt shade. Also about altitude I agree with all the data points you shared, but I have a different conclusion. For me altitude is a good shock to the cardio system. And a way to push lactic threshold. It is bad for power, and form. Personally 2 weeks and over is too long. But that's just me a guy without a lactate meter.

I guess the thing to ask for, is the right power output on the bike, maybe its a bit too huge in some moments, BUT you will know it better by yourself! In the end Kona is all about the run. GO FOR IT! And - like always - thanks for sharing! :-)

Where you grew up has some effect to your body’s adaptation efficiency. Moreover, one of the theories that Lionel referenced but didn’t spell out is that there is a difference in be acclimated to dry heat vs humidity. It’s quite different and he was obviously pretty ignorant to it, maybe even arrogant about living in Tucson.

So many negative comments! Bad races happen . . . end of story. You are on the road with a new coach and training approach with (the best team going - Erin, Mikal, Justin [swim coach], and all of your sponsors)! You don’t almost win Kona and finish 2nd for no reason . . . you train hard, have loads of talent and everyone knows you go to the deep end whilst competing pushing yourself to places all the haters have no clue about! 99% of people will not experience what you experience.
Anyone who is a real supporter of you Lionel understands that you will prepare yourself over these days prior to Kona (clearly gathering data to use this year and beyond) and toe the line doing the best you can! You’ll get the result, go home to Tucson, keep training and enjoying the life you and Erin have created in triathlon and at home and then welcome a baby into the world in the coming months! Then we’ll see an even better Lionel next year in 2023! Eliud Kipchoge just ran 2:01:09 at 37 yrs of age . . . you got time! Support in Victoria, BC CANADA!

So good to hear your experience been training with core temperature meter for last month to get data on what happens when overheating and what my nutrition and salt and fluids can do to regulate or not and you just need to reduce output to get lower heart rate. For me the differences nearly 15 beats more when working in heat and core above 38.3 vs below that. See you in Kona racing on Thursday so able to come and watch on Saturday best of luck on preparations you got this No limits ok yes there are but deal with them wisely and get the core data during the bike as when it climbs it keeps climbing so adjust early to stay in control joris

I was gutted to see how tough Dallas was for you. But seeing this, in a very selfish way, I’m glad I’m not the only athlete that this happens to. I had a breakout race, best bike leg of my damn life, at a small local race in early July-only to get my ass absolutely handed to me at Age-Group Nationals in Milwaukee. Missed my goal of sub-2 hours by less than a minute, and I’m 120% sure it was because of a lack of adequate heat acclimation. It’s…not *encouraging,* per se, but at least *reassuring* to know that the pros, the best of the best, sometimes have the same struggles, and it really IS encouraging to know that there’s something we can do about it-that we can learn to beat the conditions more than they beat us.

Having done many swims in the heat and humidity of the tropics I can assure you, you are getting cooked and dehydrated (and you don’t necessarily feel it) and it’s exhausting. Especially at midday. Also the swim caps hold on the heat and make it worse, take it off if possible. I really can’t believe the US Open start time of 2:45pm. You won’t have that problem swimming in the morning at Kona.
Also, I’ve used those WynnRepublic trisuits in the heat (the ones Collin Chartier used) they are excellent at helping staying cool. Just keep them wet with water through the aid stations.
Tapering is so important going into a hot race. You are best if peaking because any exhaustion will just get amplified in heat and humidity.
As well as your nutrition leading up to race day. Avoid, as the Chinese call them, warming or hot foods (fried foods, oily foods, wheat, beef, breads), any inflammatory food really, and take in many of the cooling foods (bananas, apples, lemon, spinach, green beans, peas, purple cabbage, watercress, avocado, kidney beans, adzuki beans…many others) and most importantly watermelon and some coconut water

For me, "racing" is only against myself and to finish.. but heat (especially with humidity) zaps me physically and mentally.. and wonder if I could even drink/absorb enough to keep up. I also agree with the comment about Collin.. I mean how does someone finish that race in that heat and barely look like he worked up a sweat???

I just raced a mountain race in Flagstaff this past weekend, and had to pass through Phoenix on the way. Phoenix was 105 degrees and basically no humidity. In the past I have lived on the East coast and dealt with 90 degree days with 50% + humidity. there is no comparison between dry heat and humid heat. humid heat will suck the life out of you. I would rather race in 105 degree heat with 5% humidity vs 85 degrees and 50% + humidity .

There's absolutely nothing wrong with you or your training Lionel. Humans have wildly different endurance abilities in heat. There's actually not a lot of quality science on it. It is however a very real phenomenon. It's possible you are simply exceptional in lower temperature ranges. Personally, I'd confirm what temps I excelled in and target those events... if possible. Kona is basically a heat tolerance test. I feel it's a far from optimal or logical event. Hopefully, in years to come it will have vastly less significance.

Happy to share that WKO5 dashboard with you where your info can fly in. So if I am doing a race in 100+ i know i need to back off 58-62 watts vs 50-60º F. No guessing.
