Hi I’m Kathryn. Come learn with me as I tackle new skills to grow an indoor winter garden in my collection of Aerogardens, as well as harvesting from a small outdoor garden, expanding the garden space, and learning the skills needed to eventually homestead in a larger space. I’m on a quarter acre lot with 1700 sq ft of house space, much of it filled with stuff for living. If I can find a little corner to set up a few Aerogardens maybe you can too. If I can turn a little bit of grass into garden space, maybe you can too. Learn with me as I become the Aerogarden Homesteader.

I have an update coming out Monday with more info, pros and cons. Definitely covers longer term usage. I'm glad this was helpful for you, my pocketbook appreciated it too.

Did you work out what was going on with the larger plants? The dropped flowers implies lack of pollination, the yellow leaves implies either lack of a nutrient or overwatering.

I never went and specifically looked anything up. I use a generic food and have to fiddle with amounts as plants get bigger. I also don't have a pH meter or EC meter so anything could be off. This can be one of the interesting parts of hydroponics, finding the right mix for each plant and optimizing. I do suspect lack of nutrients for most things and try to increase the amount I give as the plants get bigger and bear fruit. Thanks for watching.

thanks for sharing! I'm using a piece of luffa sponge under my cotton balls for additional support. I figure the roots will have no problems poking through. I also added a few sprinkles of worm castings on top of the seeds for a little extra boost

I really like that loofah sponge idea. Thanks for sharing. Maybe I should add loofahs to the growing wish list.

Love the luffa idea! I am growing luffa. Maybe I can use it as a total replacement of sponges?? 🤔

Please ask a roofer if putting two cotton balls in a plastic tube is 'work'. :)

Wondering why you don’t cover seed pods so they are blacked out?

I don't want to keep buying stickers and sometimes the seedlings stick to them. Ideally, I'd like to 3d print out some reusable covers but TPU seems to be the best material and it is expensive. So I do without. Hope that helps and thanks for watching.

I'm very excited to try this cotton ball method!! Thanks for making a video about it! I am curious, though, is algae growth a concern? (Sorry if I've missed something obvious.) I thought the stickers/covers were non-negotiable. It'd be nice not to have to worry about using them at all. Thx!

@@kerikah Algae can use up your nutrients and can also foul the water faster. But I can't be bothered especially on something growing fast that I will be turning around quickly. Even on the big things that are around for months, eventually the plant blocks out the light and slows down the algae growth. I think this is like a lot of things in life, personal preference and personal tolerance levels. I just can't be bothered. Thanks for the question, it is valid and remember, even a cover will only slow down algae but not fully stop it. Good luck and thanks for watching.

I enjoyed your sponge replacement for aerogarden! Look forward to seeing how things turned out! Thinking of trying in one of mine wondering how a micro dwarf tomato would do🤔

The lettuce plants are also doing very well. The cotton seems easier for seedlings to push roots through. I'm sure your tomato will do great, mine is so far. Thanks for watching and good luck.

Thank you for sharing. That is a brilliant idea to use cotton balls.

It's my go to now. The seeds seem to have an easier time pushing roots through it. Thanks for watching.

And you can see the seeds! Instead of looking in black holes!
