Great observation. I noticed that recently. I also was riding on my Bonneville T120 when I saw it. An area that I didn't think would be that way in Pennsylvania but this area looked very poor, unkept, almost abandoned left to its own devices, people either struggling or so complacent with their living situation that they just result to sitting on their porches watching everyone that goes by while smoking marijuana. It's disheartening. I have those thought that you expressed along with others. But yes, in other cases I see the beauty of God's creation. Valleys, greenest of pastures. I love Amish country.
