- James Hargreaves developed the Spinning Jenny in 1764. The machine was a development in spinning technology that led directly to the industrial textile revolution first in England and then across the world. Today his achievement is celebrated in historic Stanhill Village, Lancashire, where he lived and worked and which boasts a dedicated website, a heritage trail, talks and demonstrations, and a reproduction of the Spinning Jenny made from Hargreaves' original patent drawings.
Very useful short documentary that focuses on one (important) invention of the industrial revolution, and then zooms out to the larger context of social disruption. Great for teaching an introduction to world history.

What the music in the video
I have a question regarding the spinning jenny and I'd be very thankful if someone were to answer it. :D
In any demonstration of people using the spinning jenny, the yarn they're using is already spun. It's not pure wool/ cotton but already a string which means it had to processed once before.
So my question is: What good is the spinning jenny if you need already spun yarn in order to use it? Seems like an unnecessary step to me, why not just stick to spinning wheel then?
Or is it merely something to improve the quality of already spun yarn?
(If I have phrased my question in a bad way, or you're unable to understand, please let me know)
It starts off as a carded roll rag, or cotton roll - roving as it were. The cotton rolls are added to the bobbins on the carriage and fed through the Jenny. The carriage pinches the top of roving, and as the carriage pulls away from the spindles, the roving is stretched and the spindles are turned by the wheel. This is when the twist is added, the spun roving, now thread, is wound back onto the spindles as the carriage is pushed back toward the spindles.
Quel selfating vanno visti a lavorare sembra, quasi incredibile che riescono a ottenere del filato nolto bello x via dello stiramento molto lungo , solo un problema , produzione scarsa x la lentezza della lavorazione
