  • Mack always did things its own way. The “camel back” tandem-drive rear axle on this 1963 B-61 ten wheeler demonstrates how Mack added a half-foot between drive axles for a 1,000 pound increase in legal weight loading. And exactly when did the famous Mack “Bulldog” first appear? Steve tells the tale.

My Dad worked for a company in,Kings Park, LINY. They had one of these trucks , the exact same color as the one in your video, with a dump body on it! Dad loved messing with me. When we got in the truck,he fired her up,built air pressure up, and began backing her up in under drive ,or deep reduction, and started shifting gears in reverse! He said, don’t worry kid,we got four more gears left!
We went loaded it , and I mean loaded it,with blue stone for my Uncle Willies driveway! That truck never missed a beat on the way home from the quarry! It was a thing of beauty, watching Dad operate those two sticks ,reaching through the steering wheel,
BIG OLD GRIN ON HIS FACE! I’d give anything to go back to that very day! He’s gone now!
    I miss him, TERRIBLY!
    He truly loved trucks!
Thanks, Steve! Once again your videos rekindled memories, I hadn’t thought of since the spring of 1975! Thanks again!
I hope your recovery is going well! I love the truck series of video’s!

Hopefully, you're continuing to be on the mend. As stated last time:
We have an antique B Series (a 1959 B-20) at my job, and as per Mack's Functional Museum in PA, it is a 1 of 1 truck. When I sent in the information on it for research, they were very intrigued about it. Yes, Mack was in Allentown and the door data plates in the past said, "Mack Trucks, Allentown, PA. Truck Capital of the World". Ours was sitting for a while and after filing the points, checking the fluids and adding fresh fuel the truck fired right up and ran like new. Mack Trucks were like the "Chevy 350" or the "Slant 6" of the truck world. They ran, ran, ran, ran, ran, ran, ran and ran some more. Even today, I'll bet with fresh fuel and some TLC, that old bulldog will fire up. The B Series Macks are highly collectable and sought after. They are striking and classic in their style.
Mack has always had the "canine" theme in their trucks. Their engine brake is called a "Power Leash", their engine protection system is called "Guard Dog", some interior options are called "Pedigree" and some floor mats have dog prints on them. They also had another motto, "No Mack Truck is an Orphan" because they always had parts support for their products. Even today, you could send the VIN of this truck to the Mack Museum and they will send you a full history report and build record for the truck free of charge. They will basically send you the "Pontiac Historical Services" version of the data on the truck, a valued piece.
Mack was also big into fire apparatus for years and their fire apparatus are well known to be extremely reliable and simple. That division was at one time headquartered on Sexauer Street in Long Island City, Queens. This was before NYC started using numbers for the various streets in boroughs like Queens. I am pretty sure I know exactly which building it was (it's now a warehouse).
The name "Bulldog Mack" comes from World War I when the British government ordered Mack AC trucks and were impressed with their performance and found them akin to their national mascot, the English Bulldog. Even today, the Mack magazine is called "Bulldog" and features at times owners and you guessed it, their English Bulldogs. The bulldog mascot was carved by Albert F. Masury, who was an employee on medical leave. In 1979, Mack the Bulldog got his tail and ears trimmed as owners and technicians complained of getting their clothing and jewelry caught on the ornament at times. Today that hood ornament is valued. A gold bulldog denotes the truck has a Mack sourced engine, transmission, and axles. A silver bulldog means it has components from other sources.
Of course, Mack is part of Volvo AB now, but for a time, Renault had their hands in Mack, around 1979 or so. That is incorrect---the Jacobs Brake (or Jake Brake which was invented by Clessie Cummins) was introduced in 1961.

    • @tomkrisel4493
      @tomkrisel4493 8 месяцев назад +1

The Bulldog had his ears trimmed because on the later "R" model macks with the fibreglass hood that tilted front to open, you would pull on the Bulldog hood ornament in the front and guys were hurting their hands on the pointy back edge of the ears, so they rounded them off. Do you know that because the Bulldog is facing forward with his rear end toward the driver and the driver looking at the back of the Bulldog, you have two a$$holes looking at each other?

I'm not sure if it's still the case but, for many years, Macks could have either a gold or silver Bulldog. A gold dog was considered a "pedigree". Those trucks were spec'd with all Mack drivetrain and suspension. A silver dog meant that at least one of those things was supplied by a different manufacturer i.e. Rockwell axles instead of Mack units.

Actually, the 'Thermodyne' name indicated the engine, gasoline or diesel, was overhead valve. 'Magnadyne' was the name used for Mack flathead gasoline engines. 'Maxidyne' was the high torque rise diesels commonly used with 5 or 6 speed transmissions as others have pointed out. The unusual top-load differential rear axles are worm-drive. The pinion gear is a worm at the top of the ring gear. Great video!

Been a Mack tech for 18 years here. Seen quite a few B models myself. Worked on a few. The aluminum fuel tank is likely not original. The tank you called a water tank is most certainly a hydraulic fluid tank for running the plow or whatever other application the chassis was intended for over the years. Mack still runs an almost unchanged camel back rear suspension to this day including the top loader diffs. Volvo purchased Mack in the early 2000s and ruined a lot of what Mack was but also retained a lot of what Mack is. The truck didn’t have Jakes, you can tell by the valve covers. Mack did run Jake’s on most later E6 and E7 engines but also employed many variation of engine and exhaust brakes of their own designs. A true American legend. Like the Harley Davidson of trucks. Oh and Mack didn’t take on the bulldog status until the AC model was used in WW1. Mack also built several V8 gas and diesel engines including the ultimate E9 500 with 3 different injection pump variations, rotary, inline, and the latest most rare, v-platform injection pump. I’m a Mack nerd and have done just about everything a man can do to a Mack from the 80s Mack up to current. Some of their stuff is better left dead like the Renault inspired Mid-Liners, brought back in the current MD models. Also the Freedom series was trash. Their latest and worst blunder ever, under the lead of Volvo being the Mack BEV or Battery Electric Vehicle. Mainly for refuse applications. What a total disgrace to the brand. And anyone who thinks an EV is the future, do some research and look at one in person. Terrible terrible idea for our planet. Let the coal roll.

Closest I ever came to driving a Mack truck was driving my buddy's 1970 F250 2WD which had a Mack Bulldog hood ornament. (And Yosemite Sam mud-flaps!!!) I was mixing mortar for him as he built a brick mailbox on my street. After we were done one evening, he asked me if I could drive, (I was 14) and I said yes, so he said, "here, you drive my truck while I roll this joint!" I didn't smoke any. He ended up spilling a bucket of white paint in the truck bed, out in front of this lady's house, and it dripped down and left a 2' circle in the street. A few months later, they came and repainted the address numbers on the curbs, and added "714" to the white circle!😆😆 It was 1980, what can I say!!!

Those U bolts are big and long and had to go to something like 1250 ft lbs torque. It was a job, believe me, especially because when you started getting close, the bolts would start to stretch.

The second tank was used for hydraulic fluid with a pto.
The longer spread of the rear axles was called a Canadian spread, I believe you could haul a 1000 pounds more. The last time I saw a Canadian spread was back in the 90s. Not sure it its legal now.

5:55 That axle housing is standard for "double reduction" differentials. I used to drive a Brockway with double reduction rears that looked like that, although they were made by Rockwell not Mack. Back then any ratio 6 to 1 or lower (higher numerically) would require that type of differential. In the Brockway I drove, the transmission was a double overdrive 13 speed to give a reasonable top speed. The big problem with those trucks was at highway speeds, the driveshaft spins so fast that it causes vibration and durability issues. These days I believe they have moved the gear reduction out to the wheel hubs on heavy duty trucks.

Stemco brand hubcap, they are out of Longview, Texas, and still making truck parts.
Probably an oil tank for the snowplow, and possibly a sander.
The highlight of the camelback is flexibility. They'll go where other suspensions get stuck. Walking beams come in a close second in that regard.

Steve that is likely not a water tank but a "wet kit" tank. It held hydraulic fluid for a dump trailer that the truck probably hauled in its service life. If those old B models from that time did 75mph, they were going down a mountain pass fully loaded and the brakes were burned up and the driver was praying he made it out of this alive.

Glad to see you're at a point where you are responding to comments, Steve!! Loving this back log of truck vids!
Actually kind of surprised that one is as complete as it is, knowing how popular those B series Macks are!! Here's hoping it gets saved.
