Everyone seems to forget butters isn't so innocent. Yes, he is nieve, but no, he's not weak. In fact, he seems to hate Kyle just like Cartman. Or at least, he takes any opportunity he can to make Kyle feel down. Not to mention the fact he scared his grandma by talking to her about death and how she will die alone..Good on him, I cheered I'll admit, but that is still very dark.
Everyone has a point were they stop having empathy to certain people, and when you give it time, you forget they were humans once. I'm talking out of expirience, last year of high school sucked thanks to certain vermin.
I feel like, Butters is definitely innocent, but not in the way that he doesn't know mature concepts like death and sexuality. He's just innocent in the way that he's not actively malicious and usually is just engaging in harmless childhood meanness. Sometimes it's not harmless, but usually he doesn't mean to be outright destructive.
Oh goodness yes, Butters fighting back against his grandma with kindness. Heck, I remember him shaking Stan out of his goth phase. It was striking to see him be happy for his own sadness, and then at the end have him say he'd, and I paraphrase, "rather be a wimp for being soft and naive than a bigger one by being edgy and cynical". Also, every time Butters swears is great. Somehow it always felt like it came out of left field.
I’ve felt it’s less that they’re friends, and more that Butters considers Eric a friend and is often too naive to see through his toxic BS, while Eric just sees Butters as a pawn
Funny thing is in fractured but whole his big plan was to take advantage of the superhero rules to lock everyone at home... Either way covering the entire ground town in Legos is rather cruel.
@@mesiagamer5217 and all he got for that was "you're grounded for being out all night". But still, his dad still needed to be on the receiving end of a cathartic arse whipping.
Man, I had never thought of that before but it makes perfect sense. I can't remember what episodes but I'm pretty sure Butters must've used that exact word, "friend" when talking about Cartman in the sense that's what he thinks of him and like you said, is too naive to understand that Cartman is just using him.
I feel like Cartman only considers Kenny and Stan is friends. He shares Stan and Kenny’s sense of humor, and Kenny is always down to indulge in their more juvenile adventures. But yes, Cartman sincerely views Butters as a dork and will always use him as a pawn. Cartman has no respect for Butters whereas he does want validation from Stan and Kenny (and Kyle.)
The particular way it is written, that Cartman is still considered friends not just with Butters, but also many of the other kids, has to be one of the most amusingly believable, and maybe even relatable things about this show. Simply put, it’s because they’re kids in a small town, and many of them live within walking distance of each other. Surely, many of these kids will stop being “friends” with Cartman once they’re all older, but Cartman is simply another one of the neighborhood kids. He’s a disturbed little monster who they all know has done a long list of unforgivable things, but they also enjoy playing with him after school. I remember kids like Cartman, or at least kids who many people had a number of reasons not to like personally, but who were… well, around. You still played make believe and such with these kids just the same, because they were there.
I honestly wish we got more episodes between Butters and Kenny. We haven’t seen them interact much besides in Going Native and the Coon episodes (though their partnership was also hinted at in the Future specials) and Kenny is pretty effective at offering emotional support.
Mannn, Cartman's and Butter's relationship is so relatable to me. I used to be really drawn to bullies as a kid, boys who would keep being mean while I wanted nothing but to be their friend. As an autistic kid, being bullied was just normal, and there's probably been times where I just didn't notice people were making fun of me.
My "best friend" in elementary school was definitely a Cartman and Butters situation. I was around to make fun of, alienate, yell at, and insult. I think having abusive parents made this seem okay. I'm also autistic and didn't understand that she absolutely hated my guts.
There's nothing more satisfying than finally saying "fuck you" to someone who's been toxic to you and you quietly put up with their bullshit for so long
The boys' reactions to Cartman's homelessness. - Stan: Feels bad for him. Can probably relate to being a miserable alcoholic. - Kyle: Sounds like he's trying to stop himself from laughing when commenting on Cartman's sad state. - Butters: Hasn't even a lick of sympathy. Tells him "Fuck you!" - Kenny: Doesn't even show up. He probably broke ties with Cartman long ago in the new timeline.
I have a theory that butters sees Cartman as a friend because he has no one who cares about him. As evil as he is at least Cartman will hang out with him even if it is for only selfish reasons.
Butter may be easy to humiliate, but this sneaky lil' fuzzball can still be deadly to fight back those who wronged him, especially his own parents and grandma. We still protect and Stan 4 Butters!

I forgot how Liane "paid" the plumber and how Cartman thought she was sobbing over him. I nearly died laughing. XD
I remember the breast cancer episode in which Butters made fun of Wendy due to Cartman and hoping he would beat her ass but in the end he cheered on Wendy when she wooped Cartman's ass, The post covid specials imply that with Eric's influence Butters can be very dangerous but in the end he realised how he treats him and lives happily without him
Cartman successfully taps into a lot of Butters’ unexamined anger and prejudice, as well as some small minded values and beliefs. Butters may look cute and sweet, but he’s a little toxic, I think.
Butters is a parrot. He just repeats what others say around him. His values are probably mostly his parents values, thus making them extra awful. As they no doubt are the reason Butters is okay with that little parasite Cartman. Cartman just speaks boldly the things Butters parents whisper. Butters will probably become a serial killer at some point. Just like how Cartman will probably be the kept man of some rich politician. As being an adult performer would be too much work.
Butters absolutely has a lot of repressed rage. I remember the Hawaii scene where Butters was asked to hit a golf ball by using his rage, and it manages to sink an entire cruise ship Titanic-style. It makes sense. Out of all the characters in South Park, the number of times he's been wronged vs the number of times he's gotten angry is extreme. We really only see him "release" it as Professor Chaos and embrace it as Victor Chaos. I remember when his dad tried to explain boners, he avoided talking about it, only to punish him later not knowing. It's a miracle we even got current Butters when his main authority figures are his abusive parents and (to an extent) Eric.
I think Butters is an easy target for Cartman because Stan and Kyle are wise to Eric's bullshit and Butters (supposedly) being so trustworthy and nieve (despite him losing those traits after his Canadian girlfriend breaks up with him over Skype/Zoom) is the reason why Cartman always ropes Butters into Eric's sceames. But I always felt like the world (or Matt and Trey) let Eric off scott free while Butters would always be "grounded" because of misunderstanding or Stephen and Linda's relishing of punishing their son or no godly reason. I don't know if I would count the Paramount+ movies because I don't have an account and they haven't been shown on Comedy Central.
Cartman pretending to be Butters on the phone because he knows Steven and Linda are stupid is terrible, but also one of the funniest scenes in the show. I crack up every time I see it.
I've always felt the reason Cartman targets/involves Butters with his schemes is because Butters is naive enough to go along with whatever he wants, while Butters sees it as him genuinely wanting to be his friend which is why he's nicer to him than any of the other boys in South Park. They're both kind of socially underdeveloped so the chemistry basically comes naturally.

that last line from butters is such a punch in the gut "we can't spend another holiday feeling sorry for eric there's nothing that would've changed the path he was on" i only just deeped that 😭
Yeah, but it seems like they had some character development and became better friends towards him. Starting around season 7 I think in the Casa Bonita Episode
@@Sss-lt1it Yeah Kenny was okay, I think during the season where they all were mean to Butters, it was the one where Kenny was permanently dead, till T&M decided to bring him back again. Plus Butters acknowledges that Kenny was the only one decent out of the 4 of them so there’s that
Let's remember folks butter is about chaos. It doesn't matter if it's him or others he only need sow the seeds for it to blossom. And like a unlit bundle of firewood, all cartman needs to ruin himself is a spark. So by being his friend he is always in a position to set him off, while he watches the chaos unfold I personally believe that many events through the Shows eps are caused by him indirectly or directly. What makes him so scary is that he actually is able to be obscure enough no one pays him to much mind. That is unless he wants to be noticed like in chaos inc or his kissing company
What I've always thought the biggest tragedy with Butters is there are millions of people out there who watch the show and think he's just the most adorable little guy and they'd proud to have a son just like him. And he has NO WAY of never knowing that, despite how much he needs that.
this channels pretty great, I like how you analyze the show and the relationships in the show while still understanding its a comedy, and you shouldnt take it too seriously
12:37 I'd think Super Fun Time is my favorite episode to South Park when it dealt with the dynamics of Cartman and Butters while the other kids are in stuck in the old western village while dealing with a bunch of Die-Hard fanatic bad guys
Cartman isn't actually skilled enough to manipulate the smartest kids, that's why the needy and gullible Butters is perfect for him. Butters is so used to being bullied by his parents that he thinks being only half mean to him is a good thing.
The episode you want to talk about is City Sushi. Everyone thinks Butters has multiple personalities because he plays in the backyard as a truck driver or detective

Ouff. That Pandemic special episode. It's crazy how the show made me feel genuinely bad for Cartman. Granted he is also my favourite character so I'm biased on that front. Honestly the special was so good it felt like a spiritual ending to the entire show for me. It's why I thought it was kind of poetic how Cartman sacrificed his better future and ended up being a sort of hero that nobody will ever acknowledge. Though I saw this fan art once where the ending was changed somewhat where after they close the curtains on the diner Cartman smiles and starts walking away with his shopping cart with his wife and kids hiding inside and they talk as Cartman and his family in secret leave South Park for good. Broke my heart man. I wish that was canon.
Honestly I didn’t like the ending of the post pandemic episode. Yeah cartmans a dick, but his wife had unconditional love for him and that was just taken away. I don’t think even cartman deserves that.
this isn't really related to this vid as a whole but as a queer person the conversion camp episode was pretty hard to watch but it ended up being one of my favorites as well as being one of the 2 episodes that brought me to tears. definitely my favorite butters moment so far
How do you even cultivate an audience that likes longer videos? I find that the shorter my videos the better they tend to do. Perhaps it's just in the video essay space where longer = better?
Cartman's losses and Butters's victories are that much sweeter because they're rare. If they happened all the time we couldn't get as excited and passionate.

Whenever the AWESOME-O episode comes on, all I can think about is how easy it would have been for cartman to just say 'actually, AWESOME-O is a super cool super advanced japanese robot model, AWESOME-O's fuel consists of normal food so he is easy to keep running' he could've even made things more personalised by saying he's a japanese christmas model and lives solely off of KFC.

their relationship reminds me of greg and rowley lol
Its probably because Butters has low self esteem and doesn't know what a real friendship is when you think about it Cartman is a lot like butters own family members. so butters probably thinks its normal to be treated like garbage as he's often treated badly by everyone he knows. Another theory is that Butters is mostly too innocent to know that people take advantage of his kind and generous nature he normally has a heart of gold and suffers the abuse for his kindness just like in real life. Lastly Butters is probably a INFP on the myers briggs test and thats how most INFP'S are treated in real life they try to see the good in everyone and stick with what they have even if the friendship is terrible the INFP probably will put up with the abuse as being lonely is just as bad for them if not worse the reality is that sadly most people in life just aren't worth your time Being a INFP myself I learned that the hard way.

Kyle until the newer season wouldn’t ever call cartman friend Stan would but it’s Stan but he’d rank Kyle and Kenny ahead. Kenny admitted he just feels bad for cartman. So cartman is just around the 3 even if he’s using or manipulating butters butters actually wants to be there and is why cartman depends on him for plans. Even if butters is to innocent to know the plans. Cartman has asked the other 3 to do crazy plans they just always say no.

Psychopath is the wrong word. Narcissist fits much better. A Psycho has no feeling, and thus, is more of a serial killer trait. Cartmen is a manipulator. That’s a narcissist trait

that last line from butters is such a punch in the gut "we can't spend another holiday feeling sorry for eric there's nothing that would've changed the path he was on" i only just deeped that 😭
We don’t talk about how all the boys were assholes towards Butters, not just Cartman lol
Yeah, but it seems like they had some character development and became better friends towards him. Starting around season 7 I think in the Casa Bonita Episode
Kenny is not an asshole to butters
@@Sss-lt1it Yeah Kenny was okay, I think during the season where they all were mean to Butters, it was the one where Kenny was permanently dead, till T&M decided to bring him back again. Plus Butters acknowledges that Kenny was the only one decent out of the 4 of them so there’s that
Their episodes are the best ones. Love them.
37:12 which maybe my favorite episode to South Park which is A.W.E.S.O.M.E.O. Which was the funniest episode where Butters got his Revenge on Cartman
Let's remember folks butter is about chaos. It doesn't matter if it's him or others he only need sow the seeds for it to blossom.
And like a unlit bundle of firewood, all cartman needs to ruin himself is a spark. So by being his friend he is always in a position to set him off, while he watches the chaos unfold
I personally believe that many events through the Shows eps are caused by him indirectly or directly.
Butters deserves a better friend
I feel like Cartman and Butters are comparable to Greg and Rowley in Diary of a Wimpy Kid
this channels pretty great, I like how you analyze the show and the relationships in the show while still understanding its a comedy, and you shouldnt take it too seriously
Butters is too good a friend even for Cartman
22:19 and Yet I'd still consider Butters Parents to be the WORST Parents in South Park
12:37 I'd think Super Fun Time is my favorite episode to South Park when it dealt with the dynamics of Cartman and Butters while the other kids are in stuck in the old western village while dealing with a bunch of Die-Hard fanatic bad guys
It's wild that you weren't even alive when South Park released.
South park will always be the best show tv ever had
Believe me, I ask myself the same question every time Eric gets poor butters involved in his schemes.
Tldr
Butters looks up to Eric because he was the big brother he never had
Just like watching a Paula Dean cooking show...we can never have too much Butters!
I NEED an episode where Butters pays them back good just once
I swear ive watched every single South Park commentary video and finding this made me so happy.
the penetration scene is especially hard to watch. it's so disgusting and just thinking about that type of pain makes my skin chill.
""Please leave me alone Eric, my bottum is really sore." Now, I need Butters, the medium, because I'm dead. lol
By Jove...someone else in my generation knows about "Punky Brewster". And the refrigerator episode too!!
Butters "clearly has dissociative personality disorder"? Or, y'know, he's a kid. Playing pretend. Radical concept, I know.
I have a suggestion of an episode of the most wholesome characters from South Park but I’m here for whatever you decide to make, you’re now part of my work and time spent by myself content creators that help fill any silence.
Why was I not already subscribed to you? I've seen your stuff before and loved it. Glad the algorithm decided to show you to me again so I can actually remember to this time lmao
You forgot the vape episode, Cartman punches butters and they were working together on selling vape
14:03 out of all the things Kitty has ever said on RUclips, that's the worst thing ever and sent a shiver down my spine!
Yeah, it just doesnt sit right with me. Not to mention his kids were just straight up erased. No one ever really thinks about those kinds of things.
for Once I've caught this video live when it premieres and it feels good for once
Ill definitely catch this live, I may work retail, but I get an hour for lunch
Kitty Monk as long as you keep making South Park videos I'll be here
You forget how funny these plot lines are man
When that AH said “By the power of christ, we saved this child” I died 😂
Butters is the most innocent yet tragic character in South Park, he’s my absolute favorite in the show, second is Randy
this isn't really related to this vid as a whole but as a queer person the conversion camp episode was pretty hard to watch but it ended up being one of my favorites as well as being one of the 2 episodes that brought me to tears. definitely my favorite butters moment so far
3:58 Classic RUclips. You can't say "ass", but you can show Butters covered in vomit!
Thanks for putting in the time and effort you do with your videos
Look, I'm going to come out and say it:
He is not an innocent boy.
Butters is a repressed war criminal.
He’s a war criminal without a war
Butters is honestly one of my favourite South Park characters along with Randy Marsh.
I need more of these sp video essays
Butters is my third favorite character in South Park(excluding Stan Kyle cartman and Kenny,of course)after pc prinapal(2) and randy(1)
How do you even cultivate an audience that likes longer videos? I find that the shorter my videos the better they tend to do. Perhaps it's just in the video essay space where longer = better?
Pretty much yes. You can't really go into detail in short videos.
Cartman's losses and Butters's victories are that much sweeter because they're rare. If they happened all the time we couldn't get as excited and passionate.
"DID YOU JUST SAY SPOKES MAN INSTEAD OF SPOKESPERSON WHEN WOMEN ARE JUST AS CAPABLE OF SELLING SANDWICHES AS ANYONE?" But PC Principal, how can women be just as good at selling sandwiches as men when they refuse to make them?
The spokesman bit was golden hahahah
Coming from Colorado I gotta say this show takes me home! I went to Casa Bonita a ton growing up! I live in Ohio now but South Park takes me home in a sinacle way lol
It's all fun and games until the anthropomorphic avatar crosses their arms
This was a good one Jersey girl, really enjoy your channel
Made me so happy when you mentioned King of the Hill 😂😂 my favorite show
Its probably because Butters has low self esteem and doesn't know what a real friendship is when you think about it Cartman is a lot like butters own family members. so butters probably thinks its normal to be treated like garbage as he's often treated badly by everyone he knows.
This needs a part two cause butters really develops as a standalone character
20:09 I see it irony that George Lucas did get Revenge for the boys by selling the Star Wars rights of Lucasfilm to Disney despite the Disney Star Wars Sequel Trilogy was a Massive Disappointment despite the fact how I'd did liked The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi and found The Rise of Skywalker to be a Massive Disappointment with the WORST Finale
If there was a butters video you could’ve called it “butters gets his very own episode!”
29:01 bro the blast wouldn't have been nuclear, you think asteroids have some uranium in them?
Kyle until the newer season wouldn’t ever call cartman friend Stan would but it’s Stan but he’d rank Kyle and Kenny ahead. Kenny admitted he just feels bad for cartman. So cartman is just around the 3 even if he’s using or manipulating butters butters actually wants to be there and is why cartman depends on him for plans. Even if butters is to innocent to know the plans. Cartman has asked the other 3 to do crazy plans they just always say no.
Bro I audibly went “WHAT?!” When I seen them set up butters to fake his death 😂😂 like I must’ve forgot a LOT of wild shit from this show cause that took me out for a second
I think the relationship between Cartman and Butters is very simple to explain: Cartman is a psychopath, and like all psychopaths, he needs a victim because psychopaths are parasites. Butters is the perfect victim. Sheldon Cooper has his Leonard Hofstadter, and Eric Cartman has his Butters Stotch.
Psychopath is the wrong word. Narcissist fits much better. A Psycho has no feeling, and thus, is more of a serial killer trait. Cartmen is a manipulator. That’s a narcissist trait
@@GamerGod-fp1tj Surely the two aren't mutually exclusive. I had heard that narcissism was a key component of psychopathy.
@@richardlbowles a narcissist can be a psychopath, but I don’t think cartmen fits that category. If he did, he probably would’ve killed everyone by now
Sheldon isn’t a psychopath.
@@lyokianhitchhiker Isn't he? He certainly has strong psychopathic tendencies, most prominent of which is his total lack of empathy, which I've always thought of as the major quality of a psychopath.
steven doing the model car with I do agree it could be nice a part of me has a bad feeling steven would be things to be precise and would get upset if its not perfect
Of course you watch SpongeBob, you missed the best joke of the entire Marjorine episode. Eric and butter’s interaction when his mom calls during the party
Butters really said “help me hello”
Because butters is lonely and cartmen needs people to screw with end of video
32:55 not to compare The Owl House to South Park but thankfully Luz never did went to straight camp and went to the Boiling Isles all though same can't be said for poor confused Butters
I also love their color contrasting jackets with Butters wearing Cyan and Cartman wearing Red (which are complimentary colors)
short answer: butters is gullible and cartman is manipulative
