- Deep in our oceans hides a secret world; thousands of illegal drug submarines, each carrying more than three tons of drugs, worth millions on the black market. The submarines are very well-built and hard to detect! But what happens when the US Coast Guard comes face to face with these criminals?
The scale of this underworld operation is growing day by day. How are they caught? What is found inside these shady submarines?
It should not surprise you that there have been quite a number of instances where the US Coast Guard has intercepted huge drug trafficking operations. In fact, there are some pretty recent occurrences too!
The event of September 2019 involving a submarine transporting illicit substances vividly underscored the critical importance of the US Coast Guard. In a remarkable display of their capabilities, the US Coast Guard intercepted and apprehended a submarine carrying a staggering 12,000 pounds of illicit drugs. This operation was a collaborative effort between the Coast Guard, US Navy, and international partners.
The interception took place in the Eastern Pacific Ocean, a known hotbed for drug trafficking activities. The Coast Guard Cutter Munro, equipped with advanced surveillance and detection systems, detected the presence of a self-propelled semi-submersible vessel (SPSS) navigating suspiciously in the open waters.

I’m a recovered drug addict whom was in 20 years active addiction with 23 hospitalized OD’s and dozens more undocumented. I underwent 2 years of rehab and graduated nearly 2 years ago, giving myself nearly 4 years clean. Congratulations brother, I'm proud of you. I'm a recovering addict myself. I've been 15yrs clean kinda I guess. I'm still roped into the methadone lie. You know the story. Doctors get you hooked. They snatch it away. You go on the streets for your fix cause you still got a family to support. Can't take time from work for DT's. Then the methadone clinic comes up. They never tell you the absolute truth about it. Just how addictive it is, & how hard & long the detox process is on it. And after 10yrs on it the chances of getting off drop drastically. Yeah that song & dance. But other than that I haven't put anything in my body legal or illegal. To hear someone come out like you is great inspiration for me still. Plus I've made it a point to tell new victims of the for profit methadone industry the real truth the clinics won't. Keep it up brother.

They save life's up in the Bering sea. Many life's have been lost at sea? But they are the best friends of the fleet of ships crab fishing and other types of fishing. Those chopper pilots are highly skilled and with the wind blowing ungodly knots. They still put their
own life's in peril to try and save as many fishermen as they possibly can!! They also like the video shows get tons of cocaine and heroin and probably bails of weed. And that slows down the flow of drugs to the United States. Originally it was the French connection and the Mafia who saturated the East Coast with all that shit!! Once the French connection was busted the Italian Mafia moved its operation to southern Italy. They also brought the drugs through Canada to NY.
I'm Italian and I'm not proud of the Mafia and how many tons of heroin and cocaine and weed into the States? I lost a sister to an overdose. I hate drugs and the people who smuggle them into our beautiful country!!! They bring drugs into the States by the tons are straight up killers in my eyes. They deserve the death penalty!!! I agree. However the USCG is still out there doing what they do. The increase in drugs coming into the U.S. is thanks to our president creating a super highway on our southern border to keep the drug dealers supplied in fentanyl and our pedophiles supplied with children.

Yup it's the cost of doing business. The Coast Guard only stops a very small fraction and most of them get through. Despite the street value of the drugs, they're cheap to manufacture, and whoever is operating the sub isn't operating from free will, but under threat of death. It's not like the narcos were shocked. They expect a fraction of the drugs to be seized, and they probably use that number in their spreadsheet calculations.

Not a single ounce of drugs sold less because of that. The war on drugs is a complete, extremely expensive, failure (unless you are someone who makes money on selling shiny toys to law-enforcement). You want to reduce drugs/drug crimes you need to address the underlying problem: why are people taking drugs.
1) Poor healthcare leads to painkiller abuse*, leads to drugs. Solution: fix the healthcare system. The US already spends more on healthcare per capita than any other nation, so you don't need to spend more money, just ensure that it does not all go to administrators and lawyers.
2) No perspective for the poor because of very exploitative work laws. Solution: fix the work laws.
Obviously, there are more reasons. But I think (and I'm a random dude on the internet, so you should believe me without putting any thoughts into it :D) these are two major points, that could be fixed.

Before retiring from the US Navy in ‘97, I spent 3 years on a ‘reserve’ frigate in and around the Caribbean through the Panama Canal into the pacific carrying a Coast Guard detachment for drug interdiction. My ship was never allowed to open fire on drug runners to stop them but we always dreamed we would get permission to.
You were never allowed to open fire because you would be attacking your own men!!

One of my best friends in high school joined the Navy and was a submariner! Ever though I worked for a defense contractor with top secret clearance he wouldn’t say anything about his boat! Dave is and was a man of high intelligence and as trustworthy as they get!
Sat next to a submariner on a flight from SFO to Honolulu and he would not discuss his boat. SO I asked if the Tom Clancy books were accurate. He would not talk about his boat.
I’ve been on a fast attack submarine in port and got to go though the whole thing. My brother was a Chief Sonar Technician and I was an E5 in an aviation squadron. I also went on the Philadelphia right after is was commissioned but tied up at EB.
The reason is based on "need to know" - doesn't matter the clearance level... What matters is your need to know and if you don't need to, you never get to know... ya know?

Tech details on the narco-boats would have been interesting. What engines and screws? How breathing? Any capable of going completely underwater?
Not by any definition are they "Submarines". They are designed to travel with their deck awash, they do not submerge and then surface and don't have that capability. Traveling Low in the water reduces their Radar Signature, while also making them difficult to see with the naked eye from any distance. Heat Signature especially at night would be an excellent way to spot them, especially when one suspects where to begin looking. Hydrophones would also work by listening for engine noise and cavitation of the screws/propellers(anyone remember the old war movies?). The problems are there is lots of coast line to watch, and once one gets any distance from the coast there's Lots of water in between. A cartel can afford to lose a few when one carries 6 Tons of product, so consider the effort and how many get launched!
There are actually two separate types of drug smuggling vessel (for the scenario at least). There are semi-submersibles (actually very low-profile surface craft), and actual submersible craft, many times built with the assistance engineers from other nations. As I recall, there is a submersible on display outside of Joint Interagency Task Force-South (JIATF-S) in Key West, FL.

What keeps the sub from diving to evade capture? These Coast Guarders are heros!
They aren't really "submarines". Just low profile hulls that have very little visible above water. They can't submerge. To do so they would have to have an immense amount of additional space for electrical batteries and motor in addition to the petrol motor. They'd have to be water tight under submerged pressure which is a lot more difficult to construct than laminating a fiberglass hull and putting a diesel motor and steering gear in it.

Don't forget the Coast Guard Auxiliary, they have no law enforcement powers but free up active-duty members that do go after the drug runners. The Auxiliary's mission is safety and boater education. All are volunteers and most of their patrol boater are member owned.

I once owned the infamous Mercy Wiggins. It is a training film for the Coast Guard on search, surveillance and seizure on the high seas. Had no idea when I purchased it but found out soon after my first boarding in Santa Barbara. I moored next to the Coast Guard cutter. I should have done more research before the purchase.

I would hope that the USCG ,US Navy and their international partners could focus on the cargo ships full of drug manufacturing chemicals making their way to South America and other parts , unknown. Cutting off the supply of these chemicals would be at greater risk, but so much more effective. Bravo to our dedicated men and women of these services.

Interesting they continue to use US Coast Guard and US NAVY interchangeably. The Coast Guard is NOT the NAVY, and even when the BAVY does work in the counter-drug role, it works with CG guidance, as the NAVY DOES NOT have law-enforcement authority. The US Coast Guard, part of The Department of Homeland Security (DHS), carrys the law-enforcement, in the form of embarked Coast Guard Law Enforcement Boarding Teams (LDETS). The Coast Guard DOES integrate with the NAVY in time of War or National Emergency, but in the Maritime counter-drug mission, the COAST GUARD is lead as a distinct and separate entity.
I thought the CG was under the Dept. Of Transportation.

In grade school used to doodle homemade sub plans wondering why the smugglers didn’t use submarines. I knew a girl who served on a jury where they passed around a large package of cocaine that was evidence - said she froze handling it and didn’t want to let go. The stated Street Values reminds me of one of the Cheech & Chong movies where they made fun of the police who keep giving larger and more ridiculous “Street Value” figures.

These are not submarines, but semi-submersible boats. To avoid detection, they would have to submerge completely, running internal combustion through snorkels engines by night, and either loitering or cruising submerged, by batteries during daylight hours.

As the laws stand, I support what the USCG does to stop drug trafficking. But the war on drugs has long been, and will forever be a failure. It is costly in terms of the US treasurey, and in terms of the way it criminalizes drug users. It is also enriching some of the most evil criminals on the planet. There is no room to discuss alternative approaches here, but we need a drastic change of course in US laws, policies, and,our criminal “justice” system.
When we have coke heads in the White House I don't see them making a serious effort to stop trafficking.

Given a possibility that criminal cartels might eventually respond to increasing rates of interdiction by booby-trapping their smuggling submarines with explosives.
I wonder how feasible it could be to create relatively inexpensive remotely-controlled vessels possibly with Catamaran hulls, designed along the lines of landing craft with a raisable ramp or clamshell doors at the bow.
Such craft could simply scoop up the filth-filled stealth-scows minimizing risk to Marines and Coast-Guard or other law enforcement personnel while rendering the sleazy things unable to maneuver and basically helpless.
Vessels apprehended that way could then be hauled off to secure facilities where occupants and cargo could be dealt with in greater safety and any crew would be contained within a sort of floating cage rendering escape extremely difficult to say the least.
It is actually a bit surprising that when vessels having such an unmistakable purpose are detected within US territorial waters they are not simply sunk if they refuse to heave-to for inspection.

The CIA, confirmed during congressional testimony going back to the 80's, is the biggest organization that regulates and facilitates the importation of Heroin, cocaine, and pit into this country. Do you really think Trump will stop this? Also this footage was dating back to Trump's administration. How many were not caught? For every kilo of cocaine sized 10 kilos are successfully snuggled in.

Any efforts preventing those drugs getting to children, and teenagers, is worth every penny.
For all we know, had those drugs not been seized, they might have made it to our shores in Australia, and also New Zealand. But thanks to the respective coast guards, of our countries, most of the stuff is seized. I would love more to be caught, but $500+m seized, is a top effort. Well done. More money needs to be poured into those efforts.

This is rather strange, the amount of effort going into stopping drugs coming into the US, especially with the recent news that the Taliban have banned all opium growing and who complained about this the most, yes, the US.

What do they do with these apprehended drugs? That's a question that needs to be explored and make sure it doesn't end up in the free market in America. I have great respect for what the Coast Guard does in the war against drug traffic! Drugs are destroying our way of life.

It seems to me that the next frontier in drug smuggling will use UUVs. Why do they need to involve people at all, they will talk, and can be traced back.
The way it could work is that a large mothership can bring the UUV relatively close to the US shore, but outside the radius of closest scrutiny. It releases the UUV underwater, and the UUV stays entirely underwater. The buyer has a mothership also, and the UUV docks at the buyer’s ship, at a portal on the bottom of the ship, so that the UUV never needs to surface. The buyer’s ship could mask its true purpose with parties, etc.
Crewmen aboard the buyer’s ship unload the UUV and release it back to the seller’s mothership.
This would be an expensive thing to build, but I think it would be very hard to detect and defeat.

Why use a depth charge on a surface vessel, these after all are just low profile boats not subs. If they are going to use deadly force there are way more effective systems they can use.
