Great lesson! I know nothing about drums but this is the way I think of it: In 4/4 time, there is a primary accent on beat 1 and a _slightly weaker secondary accent_ on beat 3. In other words, *1* and 2 and _3_ and 4 and *1* and 2 and _3_ and 4 and etc. There is a 4 beat pulse. In 2/4 time, there is a primary accent on beat 1 of each measure. Each accent is *equal* . In other words, *1* and 2 and *1* and 2 and *1* and 2 and *1* and 2 and etc There is a 2 beat pulse. Apply the same principle and accent emphasis to 6/8 and 12/8. Except each beat is divided into eighth note triplets. 12/8 will have a four beat pulse. *1* and uh 2 and uh _3_ and uh 4 and uh 6/8 will have a two beat pulse. *1* and uh 2 and uh *1* and uh 2 and uh
I found you again Cobb! Trying to figure out how to teach my student “perfect” by Ed sheeran and you’re helping with the time signature. “Blues turn around face” classic
This stuff is so fascinating. It really goes to show how fluid music is and that’s what makes it so special. Great job explaining something so intricate. Also, funny will Ferrell reference. AND!! Loved having a cameo in this video ;)
great video! how would you explain the difference between 3/4 and 6/8? your example here or 6/8=2/4 (using triplets per quarter note) makes a lot of sense..so thanks!
Great explanation. Lots of meat without over verbalization I'm 83 and still play three times weekly both Jazz and Classic Rock and often use the hat accent when playing in 6/8 or 12/8 time. To me it's what sounds good and doesn't mess up the arrangement. I also play the kick like you as double bar phrases add so much more than just a single 1/4 at the start of 6/8. I haven't been shot yet so I guess i'm ok. Many thanks Cobb.
Your tempos are wrong on the examples, if the 2/4 in triplets has 6 notes over two beats, 6/8 has 6 notes over 6 beats. Only the beats count for tempo. Which means for them to sound the same the 6/8 needs to be 3 times the tempo of the 2/4. Same applies with 4/4 and 12/8
The tempos are fine. Look closer at the notation, it’s doted quarter note for the 6/8 and 12/8 examples. Trust me, I did the playback in the program to make sure they sounded the same.
@@cobb_thedrummer 6/8 and 12/8 aren't dotted quarters. Get a metronome and set it to 2 beats at 80 bpm, then do it at 6 beats at 80 bpm, that's what the notation says
5:20 The drumbeat by Wil Ferrel an actor/director/comedian!!! How can a drummer not know that the drummer of the Red Hot Chili Peppers is Chad Smith....
....as played by Will Ferrell in RHCP.... hahahaha. Perfect.

Awesome stuff man! I always get these confused… so thanks for the clarity!
Glad I could help!
I love your concentration while playing music faces. Adorable. Also, you're awesome.
Best line about time signature ever: All music is in 4/4 when you stop counting it like a nerd

Camera vibrates with the kick drum...lol.
New drum kit?
It’s a Tama Superstar Classic. I don’t own it though, it’s the cruise ship’s that I’m drumming on right now.

Would it be possible to do a video on how to sing while drumming? btw really enjoy your stuff, keep on making stuff!
Absolutely, that’s a great idea. Thanks for watching!
3:29 love it, you got the soul man lolololol
Right? Love that pentatonic minor scale I learned 14 years ago.
Porque nos dois primeiros exemplos os ritmos parecem ser o mesmo, e nos dois exemplos finais os ritmos parecem diferentes?
He just had to make the Will Ferrell joke 😂😂

About 6/8.
So hardly any difference. Anything in 12/8 my mind counts it as 6/8
I love you

Good lesson otherwise btw, don't get me wrong but that notation only works with quarter notes, which is not what 6/8 and 12/8 are
bro where are you shootiing this lmao this dosent look like its in ur room
I’m playing drums on a cruise ship contract right now. That’s the kit in the night club and I filmed the talking parts were filmed in my cabin.
You said Will Ferrell so serious you have ppl triggered in the comments.
I always thought Will and Chad looked alike. 😂

I also noticed that but it is clearly a funny comment.
Do you need a laughing track for all jokes or just the good ones?
