I don't know why breeds like the Dandie or the Glenn of Imaal terriers aren't more popular. They are truly perfect for so many households. No shedding, small but sturdy enough that they can be around small children, energetic but not over the top energetic. And so gentle, loving and patient with kids. And great watch dogs! It seems like "poos" are taking the place of many breeds. Most people would guess this breed to be a "doxie-poo" or something like that.
Everyone tells me my Baxter is a dandie dinmont. He's in this picture. I rescued him at a petsmart. He was rescued from SPCA bc no one wanted him🥱. His body looks like this and his face and his hair on top is soft and curly. They told me he was a terrier/ Dachshund mix. I got him at 2 and now he's 13. He's very smart, loves running after balls, and loyal to the family.
Breeders of most breeds on the Vulnerable list (which both these terrier breeds are on) will have VERY high standards for where their furkids go! Most find it easier to just hand over £1.5k in a transaction to get a cavapoo & be done with it.
It’s not just these breeds but Kerry Blue terriers too. I see one regularly on my bus home from work and when I first met him I thought he was a Schnoodle.
I first heard of this breed back in the '80s or thereabouts. I am a small dog aficionada and promptly decided these guys might be the cutest little guys ever. Whimsical name too! I was interested to watch this informative video, showcasing how endearing they are.
I think I just found my favorite breed: 1. Looks like Falkor from one of my favorite childhood movies(Never Ending Story) 2. A terrier. Terriers are the best dogs. Period. 3. Dandie Dinmont is the most fabulous name of all dogs! 5:07 Love that cream one !
Dandies are absolutely lovely. The boys tend to be more on the affectionate side in my experience, the girls more independent. They're all rather stubborn, but they're also very lovely. And as a breed they have few hereditary issues. There may be some problems with the eyes that will disqualify them for breeding, but nothing that will cause issues for any individual Dandie until they're very old (as far as I know, as an owner, not a breeder). These puppies need more love. They are fab. (Please do not send hateful comments my way, if I'm wrong I'm perfectly happy to be corrected. But I'm not going to respond to anyone telling me I'm an awful person.)
We have mixed Miniture Schnauzer and Dandie...! Great dog with a calmer character and seldom barks. Very loyal and brave! Wants to chase coyotes in our area. Ours has a little longer leg and the longer body.
My dog is virtually a Dandy Dinmont as described by this video and the original book. He has mustard legs, a grey, white fur with pepper high lights, and a white top knot. Body is longer than tall, front legs are shorter than the rear, and he has a double coat. His personality is as described, he is a one master dog, but loves most people and other animals, he is the fur boss of the house, but is not vicious just grumpy. The length is 20 inches, height is 11 inches and weight is 20 pounds. DNA test showed 45/55 Shitzu, Pekinese. I believe they and subsequent terrier breeds in Europe came from these breeds and Pugs. The flat faces bred out of them jaw bone first resulting in an under bite. Cross breeding did the rest to fine tune the breeds. They were bred to be Royal dogs and they sure are.
My 3xGreat Grandad Francis Davidson/Richardson was a game keeper on Sir Walter Scotts Estate and needed a dog for vermin and one to go down setts and fox holes. He cross bred a border terrier and a dachshund. I don't know when the next bit was written but it says the breed was 150yrs old and was shown at Crufts 10yrs ago F Dixon
We rescued a dog from Spain. We thought she was a terrier/dachshund mix, but I'm inclined to think she's a Dandie. I wish I could email you her picture as I'd love to know. I adore her anyway, it wouldn't matter to me. She has a huge prey drive so we have to be careful around cats lol Loved the video, the salt and pepper one in the video looks like my Stretch!!
Yes! That is what they told Me my Baxter was at 2 when I adopted him, Terrier/ Dachshund mix! I've had so many dog people say ... he's a Dandie Dinmont or mixed one, and all the characteristics he has and now he's 13. He has wavy soft hair when I let it grow in on top of his head. He is in this picture.
I finally encountered a dandy dinmont terrier in boston on boylston street near target in december. The dandy has puppy charm good memory as a senior they wanted to go home with me. Ive been homeless though. Im a middle grade fiction writer unpublished
I found mine on the south shore of Montreal he was 3 months of age i called the 2 SPCA and put adds in french and english saying, found small dog on Tashereau boulevard, no calls nothing. So he became Cognac and the love of my life. DONT SHOP, ADOPT
It's actually a good thing they are not popular otherwise they become "trendy" dogs like the dachshund has become and then you get overbreeding and poor breed standards.
