Damn muscle memory. I wanted to read the comments and immediately started scrolling down... Only to realize instants later that the comments are now on the right...
Very nice video. I hate the new current UI with the comments pushed to the side & the bloated recommended videos at the bottom. Hoping they change it soon.
I just got the new UI and I have to say it's terrible. I rarely used the sidebar to find new videos and now 4/5 of my screen are filled by attention-grabbing thumbnails while I'm reading some very squished comments. The "Expand" option for the comment section is very useful and I wish I could have it while also having the old UI. I just don't get why youtube doesn't allow its users to choose between comments below and videos on the sidebar or the other way around. Make a switch like with dark and light modes. Also I like your design a lot. I think there is a little "wasted" space here, like the video sidebar could be a little to the right and the video player bigger and to the left, but it looks very neat and nice. 👍
I thought more of completely foldable / completely unfoldable single column of recomendations, so you could focus on comments or give yourself a little look at recomendations while reading comments or just go search for something similar to what you are watching
Oops, here I am again. Everything looks blurry today - has YT taken away the HD feature? Or is it just me going partially blind? I am not surprised at anything YT does now, but I am too low-tech to start trying to fix it.
This update just rolled in for me today, I immediately submitted a user feedback for the first time just to angrily type out how much I hated it, then proceeded to get a chrome extension that reverted the UI change.
Call me weird, but i quite like the comments being on the side and by extension scrolling through them not causing the video to be relegated to sound only. I feel like if youtube just put the video information back to where it was i would be happy, as it would be best of both world for me.
This is so much better than the actualy new UI its not even funny, the new one looks like it belongs on a freaking tablet or phone! When i saw it i didnt tollerate the new layout for a second and used any extentions i could find to get rid of it. Real talk though this is gods work you're doing with this and i love it!
I don't like this new layout. Moving the video description, like, subscribe, and comment sections to the right side makes everything too narrow. Meanwhile, many well-organized creator descriptions become messy because of the cramped space. The RUclips comments section, which mostly consists of lengthy comments, becomes confusing as everything stretches vertically downward. My wide monitor becomes useless for reading descriptions and comment columns.
Making the View count and Date more visible is probably one of the most important things RUclips should add. It always takes a few seconds for me to find all those things because they are in the middle of the caption.
i was looking up how to get back the old ui because it looked horrendous just to get it back after watching this video. thank you kind sir(no i didnt comment on the wrong thing, i got it back as i opened the link for this video)
Sorry for stupid question... How can we use what you did here for our-selves... Can you post installation instructions or is this just demo, how could it be done better?
In my opinion, there should also be a better button for automatic translation of comments, adding the possibility to select the translation language and not the default one based on where you created your Google account; moreover, this function should be added to all of RUclips and not just the videos, as in shorts it is not always possible to translate, especially in user responses. RUclips also tends to translate video titles, this also needs to be indicated more clearly because it is not clear if it is translated or in my language.
At the very least, allow us to stretch and squash different parts of the UI like the comments so we can control how much of the screen those parts take up
@@DemystifyingDesign yeah see RUclips is one platform I do not mind living rent free in my mind. Bombard me with ads sure, but at least do it in a smart way 😅😅
What I don't get with the new UI is that if video recommendations is the focus here, I could view more of them with the old UI when it was to the right. Now they just increaded the thumbnail sizes so it can only fit 3 video recommendations without me having to scroll down
this new yt design is so awful it is hard to belive they seriously did it. It makes yt almost unsusable for me as coments are unreadable and cant focus on anything because of thumbnails everywhere.
I guess it depends on what you think their job is. If their job is to maximize attention and not get muscled at by the competition, this is a really good idea. However, if you think their job is to exclusively provide the most user-friendly viewing experience, this is of course not the optimal solution
I had the old design until this morning and now I got this totally new design. I hat it show much that I even thing about not watching RUclips until they revert it. I hate recommendations. Especially if they are based on videos that I watched on the past, although I have turned off my watch history. This new design is just horrible. A quick fix was hiding the recommendations with uBlock origin, but that leaves a large empty area. So I will have to try other browser extensions that revert the new design.
Check incognito mode or other device, if it has previous UI you should be able to revert (at least for now) by clearing browser cache. For me it worked. But first let them know what doesn't work in their new design, the more feedback they have the better chances they hire someone who used PC before. Its their 2nd try at dumb desktop UI designs, no idea if my prevous feedback did anything but I guess there are people with brain in google (previous try didn't succeed and probably evolved into this as it has some ideas common just placed a little differently) so if they got hit with tons of complaints with new UI design they would notice that there's some waste of budget going on.
I really like the design you made but is it purely a graphics proposal or can you actually convert this into an extension or something for RUclips & Chrome with the software you are using?
ill be honest, if the current design would be only used for Shorts, nobody would have an issue with it. the idea of having the chat on the side couldve been a feature, that you enable like the auto play slider, if only it where implemented in a way that you can scroll the comments with a seperate scrollbar so you can watch the video while reading comments. also major downgrade is the left sidebar now throwing a needless fullscreen shadow on everything and overlapping 1/5th of the player. there is no reason to do that.

I like your redesign, but I think the text on the subscribe button should be more obvious. Personally, I like the change to black since RUclips now adds a rainbow highlight whenever the word "subscribe" is mentioned in the video.
SO i cam one day to youtube to find fucked beyond belief the comments were tiny and I had ZERO recommended vids, so i had to go back to the home page every time I wanted to watch another video, I had to look up tutorials and ended up moving browsers in hope of restring the old look, I had to add an ad blocker and plop a bit f code into it and now it's mostly back to normal for me, I have to scroll on the sides instead of anywhere but it's better than THAT, I don't expect anything from Yt and they still disappoint me
At least its caused selectively by some cache, clear cache and you are back to previous one. (just don't forget to give them solid feedback thats what they are asking for), at least it worked for me 2nd day after I got hit with it. (you can check in incognito mode if its previous one there you should revert to it by clearing browser cache) and your redesign won't be a solution for me, I need whole width used by video itself, current design (the previous from selectively pushed to people) is quite decent (years of improvements), I don't see any need for redesigning that, at most they could make video similar-recomendations unfoldable so you could have more as its with new design (but only when you feel like it, being able to fold it alltogether would be good as well so it only apears after you unfold it a little or completely) It would be even better if you could attach video so it would stay always on top and scroll everything else below it (remember why we are on YT, firstly to watch videos, after that get information from them and talk on related topics in comments or save video for later, rest is additional much less important features... well except of moneymaking, but thats only for channels and google, still they need to find money in main features, going elsewhere leads you elsewhere). Though its experience of user with 4K screen, so I most often use only half of my screen for web browser (with YT in theater mode, though on other sites they even darken everything else so you can focus on video while new YT UI design drowns you in colors and you are not even sure wheres the video you came for or its title) or as multiple separate windows cause its much better to have vertical screen for browsing. Also save to playlist could open right above a button so selection would be closer to where your mouse/finger is. Except for that I don't see much room for improvement of UI on video page of YT.
For me it seems to have been rolled back. Am I just lucky? Though another issue I have with their design philosophy is that everything I want to do needs extra clicks. Even in the reverted UI. Over time they've made making Playlists directly from unwatched videos or adding them to the queue less consistent and often I have to click the 3 dots first. Before, clicking the clock on the thumbnail was enough. They sometimes still appear, but not consistent. Playlists in the sidebar too, it doesn't expand anymore but takes you to the full Playlist page. And Google itself removed the download bar from Chrome in favor of that stupid bubble every browser uses and yjou need more clicks there now too. The bar was THE main feature and reason to use chrome for me. Actually atrocious how this happens to more and more. It's like they want to make the user experience as horrible as possible (or see what they can get away with because they have little competition and that's so bad for the users....). My mind was blown when in de redesign they would open the description on top of the rest as a new layer you needed to close out of. And not in a good way.
I think I got it rolled back too, not sure how. I was very careful about not clicking on recommendations, but who knows. Yeah, it's kind of nuts how much pressure is put on users to just watch watch watch these days.
Great stuff, thumbs up! The official 2024 RUclips redesign is CRAP. They made every design error possible with the new UI; They removed the video title from the player itself, scrunching all important information (title, channel name, description, etc), all the controls, and the comments section - which by the way all add to the user engagement - to the right side. And it's way too crowded. Often even the channel name is truncated because of the Subscribe button. And what did they do with the freed space below the video? They added thumbnails of recommended videos which just distract me from the content I'm currently enjoying. Often I DO NOT want to see those while I'm trying to concentrate on the video (thanks ADHD), so I enjoy watching videos in theater or full-screen mode. And now in the theater mode I need to scroll down to see even the basic information like the channel name, Subscribe button, Like/Dislike buttons, etc. while all I see below the video are the suggested videos; just a distraction. It fucking sucks. I hate it. If I wanted to see the recommendations, I would not use the theater mode. They got it pretty much right initially, adding little features here and there. This is clearly a downgrade. Just bring back the like/dislike ratio, and DO NOT FIX WHAT IS NOT BROKEN!
i'm fine with the comments on the side, but the video title and other relevant information should be in the correct place. comments and recommendations should share the same space in a tabbed layout.
Don't think RUclips at any second thought "OMG TikTok kills us lets redesign". IMO it is pure Late capitalist choices. Against the consumer against humans but for the profit of ads...
they rolled it back where i live. but today it came back and its even worse. the icons are 2x the size now. and on the home page. i can see 4 videos total screen. 27inch 1080x1420p monitor. WTF
This move is like a microsoft doing in their Win8 back then Thinking that their userbase is only on mobile while we're still using desktop watching it in horizontal big screen. And this gigantic thumbnail is really bad in this big horizontal screen 😡😡😡 And also, since the comment section is on the right side while the emoji window is still the same (no horizontal scroll), a few of emoji has been hide due to being cut on the right side 😡😡😡
Ah yeah that makes sense. I think I should have introduced some sort of collapsing header when you scroll or something. Definitely cut corners with the header to put this in a YT video
Now I want to use your UI design for youtube :D. Also I want to add 1 more thing that is new they made Fonts extremely tiny and I don't see any option to increase font to increase the whole UI because its so tiny and when I'm on the couch 3meters away I cant see shit. :D Hope to find some addon or the UI designers of google to think a bit with their stupid heads...
I had the awful new lauout forced on me this week and i thought it was perminate. Thankfully today it went back to normal but my god this last week as been pain dealing with that awful new layout.
If I click on another video they get to serve another ad! Jokes on them though, I'm just going to listen to podcasts now, this version pulling my attention in different directions literally hurts my brain.@@DemystifyingDesign
How they let this ancient ass UI format through is beyond me. It's so uncomfortable. Plus, I get two massive recommendations per row.. and if I open the description (with two clicks! fun!) it takes up the entire page because it's so crammed. If it's not broke, don't fix it. Except they've been chipping away at the corners with a crowbar for months to years now, and then this month they got out the sledgehammer..
Basically, what they've tried to do (I think) is: - Increase the size of recommendations (bad) - decrease the size of description etc. (very bad.. that was important, and the less useful stuff already took up so little space) - make comments scrollable as you watch (good!) Why they felt the need to make it like THIS, however, is beyond me. It feels like Baby's First Video-Based Social Media UI. The scale of elements based on their usefulness is all out of whack. This comment I'm typing can fit 6 words per line. That's uncomfortable. It's also getting very tall. Even more uncomfortable.
It would seem YT could get more vids/shorts on the side. Removing the video info from beneath the vid to the side bar makes no sense. May as well stop wasting my money on a monthly subscription for crap. These are the same people censoring American.....glad I am 66 and on my way out of this shit show.
I just want the old UI back. The new UI is horrible. Your design is the way I'd want it to be, at least the gist of it. All I ask for is comments below the video, and recommended videos to the right of the video I'm currently watching. They didn't have to change anything, it was good just the way it was, it worked in 2009, and it also works in 2024. RUclips doesn't have to become TikTok.
I swear shitty changes like this are just some idiot who shouldn't have a job anymore trying to justify they employment. Google does this to chrome all the time to, keep changing icons and shit that doesn't matter but they make it ugly. Pretty good example of why youtube can't be profitable, they have to many employees for what the site does.
Worst youtube design EVER. They clearly dont want us to read and use comments ! It looks so bad I cant expres my dislike enough. I used an extension ASAP to get a bit out of that awful design experience. Google is becoming a nightmare company like every other tech gigant, all about cash and never about giving the user a better experience. Design team kids at google must be completely out of touch with reality of what makes users happy. I recommend bumping up size to 120 now for bigger reading size. Or making a protest march and boycut if the persist on this level of stupidity and malice upon users.. Change to BRAVE broweser or other browsers to show them, what we think aobut this endless attack of free speech and data collection.

It would be even better if you could attach video so it would stay always on top and scroll everything else below it (remember why we are on YT, firstly to watch videos, after that get information from them and talk on related topics in comments or save video for later, rest is additional much less important features... well except of moneymaking, but thats only for channels and google, still they need to find money in main features, going elsewhere leads you elsewhere).
Tbh i honestly hope youtube gets nothing but backlash for this god awful UI and if they refuse to change it i really hope people boycottt the platform
We shall see!
5:30 I already check that before clicking, all I do after that evaluate the video and check comments
Yeah, it's kind of nuts how much pressure is put on users to just watch watch watch these days.
i love how you just use the old ui. lmfao its so true.
This UI change is so stupid, there is zero reason to change it
RUclips sees it as an existential necessity unfortunately
Wish I could use your design, much better that YT 2024.
Don't think RUclips at any second thought "OMG TikTok kills us lets redesign".
IMO it is pure Late capitalist choices.
Against the consumer against humans but for the profit of ads...
Aren't those 2 things the same? RUclips wanting eyeballs from tiktok is purely capitalist
man if only we could have this be real
Fr...
they rolled it back where i live. but today it came back and its even worse. the icons are 2x the size now. and on the home page. i can see 4 videos total screen. 27inch 1080x1420p monitor. WTF
I just got hit with this horrific UI today, whoever decided this was a good idea has brain worms.
Man turned RUclips to freaking Twitter 💀💀💀
I'm not say it's bad, it's just that it's.. different
This move is like a microsoft doing in their Win8 back then
Thinking that their userbase is only on mobile while we're still using desktop watching it in horizontal big screen.
And this gigantic thumbnail is really bad in this big horizontal screen 😡😡😡
And also, since the comment section is on the right side while the emoji window is still the same (no horizontal scroll), a few of emoji has been hide due to being cut on the right side 😡😡😡
Making the header bigger is absolutely not the way to go I feel like.
Mind elaborating? What problem is created by making the header larger?
@@DemystifyingDesign Less available space when reading comments, although the added transparency helps.
Ah yeah that makes sense. I think I should have introduced some sort of collapsing header when you scroll or something. Definitely cut corners with the header to put this in a YT video
Oh the desktop? The larger header doesn't bother me at all there. And I rather like it aesthetically as well.
It should be like this and add a way to pin the video so you can scroll comments and keep watching
Ooooh, I really like the idea of pinning the video. Should have thought of that!
I'm sorry :(
"They have to remain competetive" Well, this is not how they should try and do that 😐
for me the recommendations aren't even showing
Oof sorry to hear mate
I do not like the redesign at all. I'm trying to watch a video and keep having my attention drawn away from it to the videos below. It sucks.
That's what they want though! Your attention is not mandatory, only your eyeballs 👀👀
Basically, what they've tried to do (I think) is:
- Increase the size of recommendations (bad)
- decrease the size of description etc. (very bad.. that was important, and the less useful stuff already took up so little space)
- make comments scrollable as you watch (good!)
Why they felt the need to make it like THIS, however, is beyond me. It feels like Baby's First Video-Based Social Media UI. The scale of elements based on their usefulness is all out of whack. This comment I'm typing can fit 6 words per line. That's uncomfortable. It's also getting very tall. Even more uncomfortable.
If it's not broke dont fix it - That's what I'm saying!!
It would seem YT could get more vids/shorts on the side. Removing the video info from beneath the vid to the side bar makes no sense. May as well stop wasting my money on a monthly subscription for crap. These are the same people censoring American.....glad I am 66 and on my way out of this shit show.
They're moving towards TikTok, with no reading at all.
Mine went away after a few days!
@@ferociousgumby I had to sacrifice my first born 😅
dp not like new deseign
IT JUST HAPPENED TO ME IT'S FUCKING GROSS, WHY? IT LOOKS LIKE OT WAS DESIGNED BY MIDDLESCHOOLERS WHO ARE TESTING DRUGS FOR THE FIRST TIME
If some Deltarune chapter gonna be happening in RUclips. Secret boss gonna be dislike button
Coz youtube cannot afford to pay smart designer like you ROFL
Wow this just went live with me.
Wth is this shit?
The new UI is hideous and very distracting hopefully they'll listen to the complaints and revert back
I just got this😭
Sorry mate :(
@@DemystifyingDesign its alright
@@ferociousgumby it is:D The worst part is that i am very easily distracted, so the new layout makes me even more distracted than as is
I swear shitty changes like this are just some idiot who shouldn't have a job anymore trying to justify they employment. Google does this to chrome all the time to, keep changing icons and shit that doesn't matter but they make it ugly. Pretty good example of why youtube can't be profitable, they have to many employees for what the site does.
i feel sick when im using that disgusting design. it feels like a messy room. you have everything on room but not organised. ANXIETY
oh.. so this video was a waste of time and not an actual solution.. wonderful
🤣🤣🤣
Worst youtube design EVER. They clearly dont want us to
read and use comments !
It looks so bad I cant expres my dislike enough.
I used an extension ASAP to get a bit out
of that awful design experience. Google is becoming a nightmare
company like every other tech gigant, all about cash and never about giving the user a better experience.
Design team kids at google must be completely out of touch with reality
of what makes users happy.
I recommend bumping up size to 120 now for bigger reading size.
Or making a protest march and boycut if the persist on this level of stupidity and malice upon users..
Change to BRAVE broweser or other browsers to show them,
what we think aobut this endless attack of free speech
and data collection.
The original redesign looks like a cheap knockoff
Ficou uma bosta e sequer deixam alguma opção para escolher.
so another video that rambles on but doesn't actually show anyone how to restore the old look.
This is an experimental redesign lmao
I HATE IT SOMUCH!!!
this ui is bull**** and hideous
THis is terrible
The new UI is worthless.
