Driving a Classic Car Every Day

- Today we take a look at my 1983 Mercedes-Benz 300D, a car that I have owned for two years and drive every single day. There are lot of merits to owning and driving a classic car and if you've never done so before, you'll either walk away feeling fulfilled, or completely disgusted... hopefully, the former.

Hey, You restored my faith in humanity. It is mind blowing to me how mature is your attitude about good old things. You are so young and you already have this sense about taking care of old things, old from the days that were made to last. Not ,like we have it today, as throw away stuff with built in obsolescence. You appreciate this. You are a rarity young man. Good for you. Congratulations.
I agree with you I'm currently 14 and a lot of people underestimate my matureness and I'm not trying to boast but I would say I am pretty mature because I've always cared a lot about old things I am glad I happened to become the person I am because like you've said not very many people nowadays care and appreciate old things but this guy does and I do !
Your boy just drove like 5 miles without touching the steering wheel 👌
that called 80's luxury
This car ahead of it time
I just bought my first car 4 months ago. It's a w115 200d from 1973. My dad and I are almost done with restoration. Btw i live in the north part of Sweden.
Enjoy it mate.
Your dad is a good man, listen to him and respect him.
Very nice I'm 14 and my dad has already mentioned fixing up his 1973 Chevy Nova for me to drive I might end up being even more fortunate of a person to be able to have a car without buying one especially a Nova my favorite car !
I agree . I have 13 Mercedes and all needed work. I am grateful for my old cars. I also have a 123 coupe like yours.
Glad to see you back to making car videos. You're correct, maintaining a modern classic car requires a certain time investment in finding parts & getting information about maintenance. Even quite recent classics from the 1990's can be quite hard to get parts for & few people have any interest in these cars so the onus is upon you to perceiver. I've derived a certain amount of pleasure in keeping my own contemporary classics on the road.
Absolutely agree with everything you've said James!! It's a great shame that we live in such an unappreciative, "throw away" society.
I drive a 1978 w116 280se and I love it! It's got a lot of patina but it's still great!
Well said! I’ve got a BMW E36 daily driver 1996 with a rare and very slow 1.7 turbo diesel but I absolutely love driving it.
I’m gonna get a 300sd for my first car and I love this outlook
I drive a W123 230E regularly - it's an absolute joy. Your enthusiasm for 'real old style' is great to see. With respect, I have to say though - please keep your hands on the wheel - you never know what might happen suddenly. I remember somewhere reading - your entire driving career ought to be in preparation for the time a kid runs out into the road.
Such an awesome video man. I love seeing younger people interested in older cars. It seems like everyone in their 20s is either a ricer, or thinks they need a loud V8 for validation, and it's getting old. I love seeing the appreciation behind classic cars, particularly the W123 chassis. Good taste.
I'm seriously considering a W123 and I dig your passion and sense of gratitude. I've had classic cars in the past and I get it. You learn so much.
Did you get it?
So glad someone else understands that its a good thing to own an old car and that they teach you a lot. My '80 Firebird has taught me SOOOO much in the last 2 years!
Great job on the video! Love the W123's and W126's!
thank you for sharing. loved it!
I had one and I sold it. Its one of the cars I miss the most.
Nice video man! I have an 1980 300D (profile picture) which I habe grown to love. It's not my daily driver but it was for a while. I work on it with my Dad and she runs like a dream. Make more videos about yours please! Looks to be in great condition, it's obvious you take care of it.
That's awesome! I have a couple W123's that I'm working on fixing up.
Nailed it dude. i have a 77 300d non turbo. love it
Great video. I always loved this model. I agree with your experiences. I own a 30-year-old (former Eastern German) Wartburg 1.3. Greetings from Europe.
i still have my W124 300E from high school. refused to get rid of it when my parents told me to. now? they kinda like that I still have it and it's still running strong! I'm 25 years old and have had that car for like 7 years now.
You are spot on ! Nicely said ! I enjoy my 300CD
I never realised how many others use their classic cars as daily runners until i did the same. The thing that makes it so appealing to me is the character that they are full of. I am yet to find a modern car that feels like it has any character which is a shame.
wonderful. I'm 24 and I have a BMW 525i E34. always wanted one and it's changed my life. Hope I can keep it for a very long time or keep a car with similar quality and character far, far into the future.
Well said. Exactly what I believe in.
I love these old Mercedes I just bought a 1973 22 Od with a four-speed manual transmission 10,000 beautiful car runs great and yes I'm going to use it for my daily driver around town
I've bought a w123 230 carb 1981 model, every one I know thought I was crazy, the care had some damage and few missing parts, some of which I've replace my self and some done by someone who knows better, bought it for around 1500 usd put around another 1500usd to bring it back from the dead, not full restoration though, still need some body work and some interior work, but I'm dallying it since October now, and omg not a single ounce of regret, it's not the first car I've drive, but it is my first fully owned one and happens to be my dream car!
A-men! Thank you for that homage on that classic Mercedes diesel😌
I notice that in the US the actual purpose of the headrest is not really known. The upper end of it is supposed to be at the same height as the upper end of your head (yes then the headrest is almost at the ceiling). That way in (the hopefully never to happen) case of an accident it keeps your head from snapping back, thus preventing serious neck or even spine injuries...
Sorry for being so German (🤓👆🏻) but you love that car so much I thought that's something to know about it's safety features😇
Some of these old MBs actually make good daily drivers. I just sold my 2007 C280 and as good as it was to me, I’m almost tempted to replace it with something older like you have
Great video! How fast were you driving when you shot the video? It looks like you're going fast, but the audio quality is pretty good.
hondayamahafan Thank you! I was probably going 35-60MPH in the video. Only used the Rode Videomic Pro directly into an A7RII for the audio.
I own one its a 1983 model I'm completely restoring it its a great investment I own a Mercedes before it was a 1988 260 e
Absolutely true.. much respect for the car
I feel you homie I wish I had a classic I’ve had. Chance for years but I never did and then I got into financing cars worst mistake I’ve ever made I really want a classic I currently drive a 2011 Mercedes c300 I like the car but man it’s costed mega lot so far!
What camera were you using to film this? I myself had a 1987 560SEC and loved it. The prior owner pretty much fixed everything about it so it was perfect. I had to sell it when I moved to China, but the second I decided to move back to the states I began looking for another SEC and found a one owner 1985 Grey market import with 106k miles in fantastic shape. Tomorrow I will drive it from NC to NJ and see how she does. These old birds can be terrific if properly maintained.
Drive my 10 year old car everyday to work. No way I’m ever going to trade it in for something else.
I own the exact same. Mine is maroon red with the tan brown interior
I like old cars. Iam driving daily my BMW e38 and it makes me happy :)
I realy like this!i have a Ford Capri 2600 GT as My Daily driver even in winter time.greatnings from from sweden!sorry My bad english
Everything you said is so true and I agree so much I'm 14 years old and as soon as I'm old enough to drive I'm gonna buy an old car actually my dad is going to fix up a 1973 Chevy Nova for me to drive but I am planning buying a 1935 Chevy Standard Coupe which is quite a bit older than like your car for example but I want something very different actually my dad drives a 1978 Buick Regal every day for the past 5 years and it's a great vehicle the newest vehicle he's bought is a 1987 GMC Sierra Classic and his mother gave him her 1994 Cadillac STS anyways enough of my rambling I just wanted you to know I like old cars too !
Lol here on the german countryside still every thenth, regular used car is an old mercedes. Mostly w124 and w190
Haha having done W123 balljoints many times I beg to differ on the ease of that job!
Im a student and I've always been a big fan of the w123 more specifically the 230e but i really want to know how good the speakers are in the car. I know they came out with becker speakers that was very good in those days but im curious how they're holding up to today's standards?
Hahaha oh man, they didn’t hold up well at all. The speakers all had paper cones - most of which would rot. The dash speakers are only 3” so you can imagine the lack of depth (bass) in the audio. Good for the time but certainly didn’t age well 🤷🏻♂️
What a fantastic vid!Are you feel interested in testing our microphone?:) That is a kind of microphones which is suitable to filming.
Thank you! Email me at jamison487@gmail.com so we can discuss the ins & outs. Thanks!
@@JamesCooperider Thanks a lot! I will contact you soon:)
Sold my '82 w123 last year. Ur video makes me regret my decision :'(
Great video , but please keep your hands on the wheel ! Lovely car though . Love the 123
Hoping to get a Baby Benz W201 190E
I mean my daily driver Chevy Chevette is gonna be 40 year's old Soon.
Sometimes newer isn't always better.
What about w201 190d 2.0 diesel n a mercedes as daily driver?
The W123 is maybe one of the best cars Mercedez-Benz has ever made. There is a reason why many people call it "The tank" - it keeps going on and on. I'm wondering what kind of problems did James experienced. Stock cars made in the 70's, 80's can be upgraded to be bulletproof.
There is no better sound in the world than a 5 cylinder turbo diesel mercedes.
Is it just me? Or does he look like David De Gea?!
Very wisely said.
That 10,000 I mean I paid $10,000 for the car beautiful car and I love that for speed manual transmission
No screens ?
I really wanna drive a beetle but im scared itll overheat on a hill :")
Soooooo true
My dream car
I really want to trade in my modern car for a classic it scares me even ones that's are 10k plus from dealerships would you say a classic would be more reliable for a. Dealership vs a individual the differed between a 2000 car to 10 or 15000 classic?
William Collins if your spending 15000 on a classic car you better know what your looking at but if you do know 15k will buy you a solid ready to go car
I daily drive a 1985 golf mk2 for 8 years. It's not considered a classic in my country since there are still 67 000 of them dailiy driven (10 % of all cars in country) so parts are cheap and abundant and they rarely break down.
Where are you from?
I have a regular diesel also I got it as a gift
Pretend your living In the 80s or 90s when these cars were on the road more as daily drivers.
Now imagine him without a beard.
so, where you re lives ?
🐾
Can’t Argue With That Ladies & Gentlemen 👏
he somewhat looks like David de gea
bluetooth steering👍
Those things are bullet proof,, ive owned five of them in the last 20 years 123 and 126s too bad my girl friend made by a nissan,, would rather sell it and get an other 126 300 sd 1985 model !
No computers
You must have said there is so much more to driving an old car 100 times but said almost nothing. Learning to take care of things was all I heard and the process. The driving experience, the quality, the smells, the quirks, what makes the car special, the comfort, things you've had to do. 250K on an old Mercedes isn't a lot. Many have gone over 1 million miles and held up well. Sorry, not very good.
What about safety?
They're safe enough to protect you in most crashes. W123s are very durable vehicles.
They have abs crumple zones etc
Everyone I’ve had a crash in one, the other car comes out worse
I love the fact that the ad for this video is for BMW. (Psst, BMW’s are crap)
Sure you have a very lucky boyfriend 😊😍 gorgeous
That's not a classic! That's just an old shitty car...and it's not even that old
The youngest w123 is 36 years old, and will long outlive anything on the road today with standard maintenance
@@AVAKemicals that's still not a classic...I have driven a 1962 simca as daily for about 6 months now. That's a classic
@@roopepeltola6103 what's your definition of a classic? 1962 is vintage/historical purely by age nowadays.
@@AVAKemicals In this kind of context (as in hey I'm driving a classic car every day and I'm going to tell you how difficult it is but I forget to mention that this car is almost exactly same as modern cars) it's not a classic car. People drive those cars hundreds of miles every day
