I was only two years old when the Tigers won it in 1968 but through this recording I have re-lived this season so many times it was like I was there. Nothing like the great voice of Ernie Harwell describing the action. Tigers won 37 games trailing going into the 7th inning and 29 in their last turn at bat (what excitement !!!!)
I can't be the only one who tears up when Ernie says "Let's listen to the bedlam! Here at Tiger Stadium." I still remember that night so well. A kid staying up extra late with a transistor radio next my bed.
I turned 12 that September. That whole summer was amazing I remember the school put the ending of game 7 on the PA system. One of the highlights of my life.
The memories. I was 13 years old. That summer and that great Tiger team still rings fresh in my mind 52 seasons later. Great to hear The Year of the Tiger album again with all the great radio calls by Ernie Harwell and Ray Lane. Thanks for this post.
My brothers and I growing up in northwest Detroit bought the LP at Tiger Stadium in the early 70's and knew this entire recording verbatim! We played it around the clock reliving the magical mystery tour year of the tiger 1968!
" ... and the Tigers win their first pennant since Nineteen-Hundred and Forty-Five! Let's listen to the bedlam here at Tiger Stadium!" Then, I break down and cry like a baby. Ernie Harwell's call gets me every time.
Andrew Baker LOL you're not the only one. I get tears in my eyes every time I listen to this recording. It was a magical time that you would have had to have lived through in order to know how it felt.
Yeah I broke down and cried too. Over wonderful memories, and lost youth. I remember the broadcast, I was listening to it in my bedroom. I think the entire state heard me cheering.
I have to come back and listen to this every now and then.....LOL. In my opinion, the absolute best moment on the entire LP is Matchick's home run against Baltimore at 19:55. You hear the crowd hollering in anticipation of the ball going into the seats. They're hollering so loud you can barely hear Ernie Harwell, and then when it finally DOES go into the seats, the entire stadium literally ERUPTS!! It is one of the most exciting things I've ever heard happen in sports.
We had this album from NBD. I found it in my Parent's basement and framed it as a Christmas present for my Brother. Now I was able to hear it again. Thank You!
So great to hear this again! Some years ago I found a copy on CD. We lived in Dearborn that year, and I can recall going up to Michigan Avenue on the big night and seeing people honking their car horns, throwing rolls of toilet paper across the street, and going crazy. [Footnote - for one year Tigers pitcher John Hiller lived just a few blocks from us on Francis Street, a few houses from Elmdale.] I suppose like many people here this reminds me of some departed family members. In my case it is my father and my late brother Paul, both huge lifelong Detroit Tigers fans.
I Was THERE with my Dad, at Tiger Stadium when they won the Pennant. Yes it was Bedlam. My good friend I have right now, was at the Denny McLain 30 game win -- Very Joyous 50 year memories--
As a 10yr old boy I was there opening day, as we got beat by the Red Sox..Several games in between, especially bat day! Never missed that day the next 5 years..To cap off the year, My Dad took me to see the Tigers clinch against the Yankees...Never forget Don Wert in the bottom of the ninth singling in Kaline from 3rd base..
Thanks so much for this post. I had this back in '68 when I was 15 years old. Some say the '84 team was the best Tiger team ever; but people would have had to have been in Detroit in '68 to feel the magic that was happening. They hadn't won a pennant in 23 years, Kaline and Cash were in the twilight of their careers and this pennant meant a lot. Add the fact that everyone figured Gibson would dominate them in the series yet they still beat the Cards, & you have the reasons why they were the best
@@mikeforte7585 The 1984 team didn't commemorate its season with a National Bank of Detroit vinyl like the 1968 team did, but I clearly remember they did sell audio-cassettes of Ernie Harwell and Paul Carey's play-by-play of the season. Has anyone downloaded that on RUclips like they did this 1968 record?
The record store in Mt. Pleasant (New Moon Records, long gone now) used to have a copy of this on their wall. I asked, but they said it was not for sale.
I think one of the reasons Tiger fans loved this club so much, aside from the obvious, is that so many of the star players were native Michiganders: Willie Horton, Bill Freehan, Jim Northrup, Mickey Stanley...
This is Awesome I want to add some of this to a pregame video I am making for a tribute to the 68 Tigers followed by a game they won in dramatic fashion on Strat-O-Matic and will give your page and this video full credit as the source if that's okay? I will provide links in the description and on the video itself with a card to this video. Is that okay with you? Have to ask first if it is okay? It will bring traffic to this great video you have provided everyone with. This is Priceless! Thanks for posting
Hey Greg, you ever make that video for Strat-O-Matic? SOM player myself and BIG Tiger fan. 1968 has been announced as this years "New/Re-done " older season. Was at that pennant clinching game in '68 as a 12 year old. Remember it well, mostly that 9th inning!
Ernie gets (the deserved) praise, but Ray Lane was priceless as well.
Is there anything as soothing as Ernie Harwell painting a radio game?

I did exactly the same thing...People have no idea. I was 12.
50 years ago tonight (9-17-68)

Dee Donner Ramone Dandy recollection :)
You and me both botha!!
There's no other voice is so good hearing with Ernie Harwell. But also Don't forget get the voice of Bruce Martin for the Detroit Redwings.

***** You know it!
We had this album from NBD. I found it in my Parent's basement and framed it as a Christmas present for my Brother. Now I was able to hear it again. Thank You!
I think that Jim Price helped put this album together.

Remember this like it was yesterday. I was 15 and watched or listened to almost every game.
I was there never forget
Know this by heart! Since 1968!
I used to have a collection of these Fleetwood albums. Thanks for posting this!!!

I've got year of the tiger 68 on DVD and listen to it quite often.
I like how Ernie and ray don't over talk and you can feel like you were there by hearing the crowd ,now days the tiger anounsers never shut up
I noticed that, too! It's obvious they feel as if they're the headliners instead of the Tigers.
@@OzzyTunesIII Even when they clinched the pennant Harwell said, "Let's listen to the bedlam here at Tiger Stadium."
RIP Al Kaline 🐯
Awesome memories! Had the same album!

Great story, great memories! :-) "Go Tigers"!!!
Is Ernie's voice like like nectar to the ears?
Yes. And Ray Lane's over-dramatizations and over-pronunciations are like fingernails on a chalkboard.
@@generalbullmoose I thought they worked well together
23:24 Hawk Harrellson watched Gates Brown's walk off go over the fence and probably did not say YOU CAN PUT IT ON THE BOARRRRRRRRRRRRD!!! YES!!!!!!!
Tigers fans don't need that.
Now that Alan Trammell and Jack Morris have been elected to Cooperstown, the 1984 team has 2 Hall of Famers the same as the 1968 team.

Hard to compare different eras but the 1968 World Series Champion Detroit Tigers were the best Tiger team ever.

I remember both Tiger teams.(68 and 84)...both teams were great...it wood be impossible for me to say one was better than the other....
Beating Gibson in game 7 away is the most remarkable feat

I totally agree!! What a series!
Actually, Willie Horton was born in Arno, Virginia. He moved to Detroit as a youth.
True...but he was a proud grad of Northwestern High!
RIP Dick McAuliffe.
There's no way that the music bed was mixed so loudly on the original version.
Who (besides you) Cares???
OzzyTunesIII because it sounds like shit, dumb-ass?
Thank you for posting this! My dad had this record, and I played it to death.
Know the record word by word
Anyone know why some Detroit players have the sleeve number on the road jerseys on the right and some have the number on the left?
Two different suppliers
Count me in on the tears...that summer was incredible. Oh yeah, and Stanley played shortstop in the series. LOL, that ever happen again?
Maybe through an injury.
I doubt a Ray Oyler would stay in the MLB with such a bad batting average. He was 0 for August.

I have it in my den on a wall gallery
