    I love your videos on these Garmin unit! The boat I bought has a 93 SV plus unit. Which me and the guy I bought it from couldn't get to power up. Once I got it home I was able to test and find out that the Cradle was bad and have since replaced it. What a lifesaver that video was. Definitely a new subscriber. And now I have to check for updates. And you make it very easy to follow and understand what you're doing. Thank you very much

    Dan, really finding the videos useful, with right level of detail for me. I'm wanting to try the home battery setup, as the boat is on a marina 90 minutes away. The rear of my 75SV has three ports. Do I need just the one data/power cable? If so, which port does it attach to on the back of the Garmin? Can't seem to find the answer in your videos or user manual.

    • @DanRichardFishing
      @DanRichardFishing 2 года назад

      Thanks so much for the kudos on the videos, glad they are helpful! For your 75SV, it depends on which model/generation you have. Is it the original Echomap or one of the newer ones like the UHD or Plus? The original version of the Echomap, the first generation, didn't have the single big connector on the back of the unit that plugged in to the cradle and then the cradle had all the connections. In that case, the power wire was a 4 pin power connector that simply passed through the cradle and plugged directly in to the unit itself. So with that version, you only need this power cable and you don't even need a cradle: amzn.to/3DQ07Wo
      Now for the newer generations (CHIRP, PLUS and UHD) the power cable plugs in to the cradle itself, and then the unit plugs in to the cradle. For that setup, the power cable is the one with the round red plug, which is this one: amzn.to/2Xp0lEi
      Just bear in mind when you remove the unit from the boat, you also need to bring the cradle with you, or buy a second one for at home.
      Hope that helps!! :)

    • @JW200760
      @JW200760 2 года назад

      @@DanRichardFishing Thanks for the quick answer. I think it is a 'newer' CHIRP (on the boat when I bought it). It fits in to the cradle on the boat, which has three plugs, which plug into the corresponding ports on the rear of the Garmin. I'll have a closer look when I'm down there next. Keep up the good work.

    • @DanRichardFishing
      @DanRichardFishing 3 года назад

      Salut JP! Garmin definitely do have 800mhz transducers available, the GT20 CHIRP transducer for example has a 800Mhz setting as well as the GT22 and GT30. It depends on if you want just DV or do you want Sideview as well. You can find the entire transducer catalog at www8.garmin.com/marine/PDF/transducer_selection_guide.pdf
      Your 97SV probably came with a GT51 (which is a really good transducer) but will only go to 455.

    I'm confused, I have a dedicated sd card that has my profile on it that I keep in my unit all the time. Do I need a separate sd card just for updates?

    • @DanRichardFishing
      @DanRichardFishing 3 года назад +3

      This is a great question to ask. I've been working with computers since the eighties and professionally since the nighties and if there's anything that I've learned is that when it comes to storage devices you want redundancy. You just never know when something might go wrong. So while it is not necessary to have a second card I highly recommend that you do just in case while creating the update file you corrupt your personal profile files. If you prefer to just have one, I recommend that you make a backup on your computer of the contents of your SD card before you add the update file to it. Hope that clarifies my opinion on having a secondary card, thanks so much for the question!

  • @GalaxyRods

    So when you powered on your units to install update...were your transducers pinging and all hooked up to the black box. Livescope ducer does not like to be out of water running. Sorry if this is a dumb question!

    • @DanRichardFishing
      @DanRichardFishing Год назад

      Not a dumb question at all! This has been discussed extensively on forums and fishing groups, but here is what Todd Driscoll from Garmin says and that's good enough for me:
      _"All Panoptix transducers including LiveScope keep pinging when you put the MFD in sleep mode. If you want it to stop, you need to use the Disable All Sonar button from the power menu.
      But, as we have talked before, per our engineers there is no concern regarding overheating as they have built-in protection. However, nothing wrong with being conservative and disabling the Panoptix sonar when out of the water either."_
      Hope that helps!

    Hey Dan, purchased the power cable online and the 12 V battery with charger from Bass Pro... its is an 8 amp unit... not a problem says Bass Pro... what say you? Also as a recently retired new freshwater fisherman I’m really struggling with all of the functionality with Minn Kota I - Pilot Remote .... Not much out there I can find to help🙁🙁🙁‼️

    • @DanRichardFishing
      @DanRichardFishing 4 года назад

      Hi Dale! Yeah you're definitely good with an 8 amps, more than enough :) Congratulations on the retirement by the way, you get the coveted status of NOT having to fish on the weekends when the boat ramps get nuts, congrats!! :) For the remote, I wouldn't stress too much with it, it's a matter of time on the water and getting used to it. Did you get the foot pedal and the remote? I have the slightly older generation of remote, so the remote is the only way I can engage the spot lock so I use it quite a bit. It if wasn't for that and I had the newer pedal with the spotlock button on it, I would barely use the remote. It is nice to use it for cruising and stuff like that but just the style I fish, I don't rely on the remote too much.
      Now one feature that is handy is the spot-lock job function. If you have a newer unit with the built in heading sensor, you can do this. Basically let's say you want to move your locked in spot 5 feet to the front, back or either side, you just tap a button and it will move you automatically. Check out this video from Minn Kota: ruclips.net/video/TQHmbaolMO4/видео.html
      Just take your time and don't be afraid to take your boat out for a couple of hours and play with the remote and see what the functions do. You'll probably find a ton of them you won't even use. I hope to upgrade to a new motor very soon and I'll definitely do a video on the new functions and how they work. Happy retirement and tight lines!

    Dan, thank you for the great informative video. Do you have any information on the latest April 27, 2022 Garman update? I just updated my new UHD Eco map 73SV when I purchased it using Garmin Express . The update moved me from version 16.0 to 20.0. With that update to 20.0 , I lost my sonar simulator. I like having that for practice, especially since I’m coming from 30 years of owning Lowrance units. When I try to run the simulator I get a prompt that says I need to download software bundle version 2022.0426.0. I have tried downloading that three times using Garmin Express and every time it fails to update the software. I decided I would use active captain. I still get no software updates for the unit both on my phone app and on the unit itself. The message reads “no software updates available” . The messages on both the phone and unit just keep saying I’ve got the current version 20.0 while on the Garmin website it shows 2022.0426.0 is now available. Any tips , tricks, or suggestions would be appreciated. I have tried to call customer service but my Pacific time work schedule does not align with Garmin’s Central time customer service work schedule. Thanks

    • @DanRichardFishing
      @DanRichardFishing 2 года назад +1

      Hi there! So after the last update, the simulator became a separate install. You need to download it separately on your PC and install it to an SD Card and then use that to load it on to your unit. You can find that pack and install instructions at www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=7717
      Hope that helps!!

    If you have a Garmin Maps Card in a 94SV. Would you take that card out, put the new update card in, update and then put the maps card back?

    • @DanRichardFishing
      @DanRichardFishing 3 года назад

      You can only have one map card in the unit at a time, unfortunately you can't "upload" a map to the unit (the only map stored n the unit is the map that came pre-loaded when you bought it), it has to be on the card. So let's pretend you have the US Bluecharts G2 maps on your card and now you bought the US Bluechart G3 maps, you would have to keep that G3 card in any time you want to use it. If you have any custom items like screenshots or quickdraw maps, you can copy those to the new card. Now let's pretend you have a card for US lakes and one for Canadian lakes, then you would have to switch the cards out depending on where you're fishing.
      Now there is a way to combine maps on a single card, but it's a bit of a pain. The map file that the unit reads is actually the same name no matter what map it is, and that's "gmapsupp.img". So you can't just directly copy it on to the card because both maps will have the same name and you can't rename it. So what you have to do is use a special software tool called GMapTool and that will combine your maps in to a single gmapsupp.img file that you can use. You can probably find tutorials online on how to do it, I only did it once 3 years ago so I don't remember exactly how. Now just a word of warning. If your map file is too big, it will severely impact the speed of your unit like when you scroll around on the map and zoom in/out etc. When I did it, I only imported a small section of map to the standard Canadian Lakes map I had from Garmin, but I was told by the company that made that supplemental map to not go too crazy or it would slow down my unit big time.
      Hope that helps answer your question!

Super important that it is 32 GB or less and that it's formatted correctly otherwise the unit will not read the card. When you plug in the card with the update into your unit it should detect it automatically and start the update process.

      That is REALLY strange. When you go to format the cards, what file system are you using? Go in to Windows Explorer (Win key + E) and put the card reader in your computer and it should show up as a drive letter like D or E etc. You can right-click on the drive letter and a little menu pops up, click on properties. When the properties opens, you will see "File System" just above where it shows you the used and available space on the card. What is it saying the file system is? (apologies if you already knew how to do all this)

    hello random question here while watching your video.
    My brother has a Echomap 95sv and i was looking to update the unit is this the one you call Chirp in a video?
    And cause we have AUS/NZ map installed on it, will maps stay same or will it reset? cause curious about this before we mess anything up.
    maybe theres a site where to download theses maps too?
    Thank you so much!

    • @DanRichardFishing
      @DanRichardFishing 2 года назад

      Hi Viktor, thanks so much for the question and for being a subscriber! So the CHIRP model is the second gen Echomap and the last generation before they went to touchscreens. Now a 95SV is normally Canadian maps, but I'm not really familiar with the map versions outside of Canada and the US. So assuming your Aus/NZ maps are the built-in maps, then updating your firmware will NOT affect your maps at all. Have you registered your unit with Garmin yet? You can use Garmin Express to download your maps but you have to register your unit via Express first. From there you can download the default maps in your unit AND you get 1 year free upgrades from the time you register online :) Hope that helps!

    • @DanRichardFishing
      @DanRichardFishing 4 года назад

      Hi Kali, thank you so much for watching and leaving a comment! You can definitely leave the SD card in there if you want and just take it out the next time you do an update, but you certainly don't have to. You can safely remove it after the update is done and store it someplace for next time.
      In terms of size, honestly I would get the biggest screen you can fit in to your budget. I had a nice little 5" Garmin unit that worked great on my Jon boat that would be perfect for a Kayak. Check out the Striker Plus 5CV at amzn.to/2LCQTUb and if you want even more compact, there's a 4" LCD version as well that is very small and only costs $176 on Amazon at amzn.to/2LCQTUb
      You can also go bigger with a 7" LCD model at amzn.to/2WFfSwk and bear in mind that the 7" screen version is only $85 more than the 5" screen.
      I would suggest using RAM Mounts for the mounts, they make bases for all of these models that are perfect for a Kayak. It's what I use to mount all my sonar units.
      The main difference between the Striker series and Echomap series from Garmin is that that Striker series do not have a touchscreen, can't be networked and don't have the NMEA port needed to connect a Panoptix system. Echomap does have a 6" Plus unit, but only the 7" or larger screens have touchscreens, and they're about double the price of a Striker.
      Hope that helps!

      @DanRichardFishing 4 года назад +1

      @@popaki9484 Congrats, you just bought an awesome unit! The pre-loaded maps are in your unit by default, there is nothing to do and they will load automatically when you start your unit. The map packs are very simple to use generally, you download them to your PC and run the installation program. You will need a SD Card for this and the installation will automatically load the maps to your card. Put the card in the unit and when you start it up, it will detect the card and load the new maps. I'll have to doublecheck but I am positive it runs like the older Echomaps and that you have to keep the card in to use those added maps. The internal storage will only allow updates to the preloaded maps.
      I would suggest you try your unit out first and see if it has all the maps you need, they are REALLY impressive and the default ones on mine were all I needed. If you still decide to buy the coastal water maps, you can buy it from the Garmin site at buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/p/37703 and either download the installation like I explained above or you can have an SD card mailed to you. But like I said, try your built in maps before you decide!

      Hi Jose, I'm afraid you do need to pay for the maps, they're about $150 for a regional map pack. Just bear in mind they do sell fake maps online, but I know many people have been scammed by fakes that don't work. Overall, I think it's worth it to buy the packs and you know you are getting the latest data from a trusted source that will offer you customer service if you run in to any issues (And Garmin CS is awesome btw). You can find mas of the Caribbean at buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/c452-c455-p0.html (Scroll down a little bit). Hope that helps!

    I need your help. I’m trying to set up my Garmin 73sv. It asks me to select powerboat or sailboat. I will be fishing out of a kayak. Does it matter which one I select?

    • @DanRichardFishing
      @DanRichardFishing 4 года назад +1

      Select powerboat I am almost positive that the sailboat selection is so that the navigation system compensates for the very long keel of a sailboat and configures the depth alarm accordingly, which is completely customizable anyway.

    I have a 74cv. When I am running slow, less than 10 mph my depth works. Over that speed it just flashes. It worked fine prior and just started to do this. Any ideas?

    • @DanRichardFishing

      Are you 100% sure that you didn't hit the transducer or the transducer Mount? Is it still tight secure and in no way bent?

    • @arweller33
      @arweller33 4 года назад +1

      Dan Richard Fishing it is still tight. I talked with garmin and they said the same thing. Advised me to put one notch down. Will try this weekend when back at the boat. Hope this fixes it.

    • @DanRichardFishing
      @DanRichardFishing 4 года назад

      @@arweller33 normally what you're experiencing is usually air bubbles from the boat wash coming off the bottom of the boat out the back and passing through the transducer. It's typical if the transducer is too high, especially with aluminum boats like mine that have a line of rivets along the bottom where it meets the transom. What weird is that it was fine then started acting up afterwards so that's why I wonder what changed. Definitely try dropping down a bit of you can and retest. Let me know what happens, I'd love to know of that resolves it!! Good luck!

      Hi Joe, this is a easy YES!!! Having the touch screen plus a bigger screen makes a HUGE difference and you'll NEVER go back to non-touch screen again, I promise you. The 73SV Plus has also gone down in price since the UHD models came out. If you plan on buying it on Amazon, here's a link you can use and your purchase helps support the channel: amzn.to/3ihFdoV
      Thanks and enjoy! I had just about the same unit as yours and was SOOOOO happy when I moved to a 93sv CHIRP and then even MORE happy when I picked up the Plus and had touchscreen.

    Only 2 devices allowed by Active Captain?
    I have 2 echomaps, a cell phone and laptop. Apparently I'm limited to only 2 of these devices on Active Captain. Why? Anyone know how to get around this? It says I need to add a whole Separate account to have more than 2 devices. I don't understand why. You'd think they would want people to own more of their products

    • @DanRichardFishing
      @DanRichardFishing 2 года назад

      Hi Adam, something doesn't seem right with this, you can DEFINITELY add more than 2 devices to Active Captain. I would recommend you give Garmin customer support a call and ask them directly. I have 4 devices in my Active Captain with zero issues.

    • @adamr8628
      @adamr8628 2 года назад

      @@DanRichardFishing Yeah, I don't know why it's set to two devices. If I try to add a 3rd, a popup comes up and asks me which other device I want to delete to make room for the other device. It states that only 2 devices are allowed. It's obviously a Garmin limit by design, it's not like it's me making a mistake in using the software.
