I have been inquiring since early 2020, coming from a very Pentecostal background. When I purchased my first icon of Christ the Pantocrator and showed it to my 1 and a half year old son, he immediately leaned in and kissed the face of Christ. I had never venerated an icon, he had never seen this done and he had never done this to any other image.. not even to pictures of family. This was a significant factor in my acceptance of icons.

When it comes to this particular tradition(including kissing the priest's hand)...i didn't have an issue with it once I read Acts 20. The part that opened my eyes was when Paul went to Ephesus to talk to the elders of the church and long story short when he told them they wouldn't see him anymore they were sad. It says that Paul kneeled down to pray with them and they all weeped and fell on his neck and kissed him and accompanied him back to his ship. I realized from that how much we lack the understanding of honoring ppl of importance or leadership in our lives, especially in a religious sense and what that can look like. We get very paranoid not knowing if we are worshipping someone other than God when that is not what is happening.

Thank you Fathers for posting this. I've been reading the late Archbishop Anthony Bloom's book called "Beginning to Pray". In it he talks about how if we focus our attention on an "image" of God in our heads or even an icon as we are praying, we've essentially placed an idol between us and God. It confused me because he was an Orthodox Archbishop! This video cleared things up for me. Thank you!

Exodus 20 commands that no images be made, and then exodus 25 commands images be made… maybe, just maybe, God is not contradicting Himself and there is another explanation?

Make one cherub at one end, and the other cherub at the other end… And the cherubim shall stretch out their wings above, covering the mercy seat with their wings, and they shall face one another; the faces of the cherubim shall be toward the mercy seat.”

@@_Zakariah find the story of the first icon: The Icon Not Made with Hands, August 16.
(You can find it on the Orthodox Church in America [OCA], site.
      Or other places..)
It was made by Jesus Himself when He unfolded a cloth and held it up to His Face and His Image appeared on the cloth.
He was on His way to Jerusalem so He could not wait for the servant of a pagan prince, Prince Abgar/Abgarus of Edessa, to paint His portrait.
Prince Abgar had written Him a letter requesting His Image, because he was convinced that, if he saw HIS FACE, that he would be healed of leprosy.
      (SUCH FAITH!)
JESUS told the servant to take it to his master, and to tell him to hold it to his face and he would be healed....
      BUT NOT COMPLETELY..
BUT, THAT, IN DUE TIME, HE would send someone to heal him completely..
      AND SO HE DID:
AFTER PENTECOST, JESUS sent one of the men who had followed HIM with the Apostles, back to the his home city of Edessa, and he taught Prince Abgar and the prince was baptized and fully healed..
His whole family and household was baptized and later his whole city..
He took the image/icon and had it mounted on a board and had it covered with precious metals and pearls and stones and had it mounted over the gate of his city..
      Below he had had written:
      "OH, LORD, JESUS CHRIST,
NO ONE WHO TRUSTS IN YOU WILL BE DISAPPOINTED!!"
It became a destination point for many Christians....

Because Christ fulfilled the old law. It is complete in and through His Incarnation. As Colossians says under no uncertain terms, He is the icon of the invisible God. Also, in Colossians, the Apostle states clearly what Fr. Maximos is saying here regarding passions as idols. Both 'icon' and 'idolatry' are derived from Greek and are easily made out even to the non-academic eye. Also, it's worth noting that whenever Christ Himself speaks of the commandments to keep from the old law, He never once mentions Exodus 20:4. I hope this helps!

I find myself wanting to say that anything (from God)which messes with your former prtnst brain is probably a good thing!
But i do say that in a gentle way with a smile..
Psalm 51" Create in me a clean heart, Oh God, and renew a right spirit in me".
Honestly, the Orthodox church is not an uber-prtnst Church..
It is the Church of Truth and mystical beauty which the prtnst works usually dares not to accept or get too close to.
It seems to me that you are on a right path..
Abbot Tryphon put out a video a while back where he said he at times lights his lampadas in the mornings and feels so unworthy that he can't look the images in the eye.
But he loves them and knows they love him..
And, eventually, he can do that again....or words to that effect..

My man the New Testament clearly isn't just a series of books that teach morality. If that was the case then the teachings of Christ would be at the same level as those of say, Aristotle, Plato, Socrates or Buddha, yet this is clearly not the case as we read in the testimonies of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John who all claim to report eye witness testimony of a man who claimed to be God and didn't just give moral teachings but who also performed miracles, died and was resurrected from the dead and offers all of us a path to salvation. To reduce the Bible to a series of moral teachings is disingenuous. Have a good day and I pray you realise the truth :)
