If you use some larger tie rips through the gaiters you gain more leverage moving them up

+Maximilian Rockefeller they keep dirt and gunk away from the fork seals. Mostly cosmetic though. All the sportsters come with them from the factory

+justin2800 on bikes with a fairing it makes it easier to stand up because the weight is more centered. On the other bikes I just do it out of habit
