You may not believe it but this movie actually went really well in the theaters when it came out and was really well received. People thoroughly enjoyed it. And I believe it was one of the better movies of that year
As far as I can remember, even though it did make a lot of money overall, a sequel almost was not made because it cost so much to make the movie and market it (which I think was about 3 x's the budget). I think it barely broke even after quite some time being in theaters and then I think it took even longer after that to finally make barely any profit that it is a miracle a sequel even got made since sequels usually cost even more to make. Again, as far as I can remember, I think it was considered insane at the time that even after all the fandom mania this movie had, it still took so long for any news of a possible sequel to come. A sequel was not a sure thing. It does seem crazy to think about it that a movie can make a lot of money, but still not make a profit or barely break even because the movie just costs so much to make and market it. But, that is the game nowadays with so many movies.
Here’s a cute behind the scenes story the four of you might find not know and will enjoy, but Mana Ashida, who played young Mako could not pronounce Guillermo del Toro’s last name, so she asked if she could call him “Totoro-san,” as a reference to the titular character in Studio Ghibli's _"My Neighbor Totoro"._ Funny enough in a recent Oscar interview following Del Toro’s win of his animated take on Pinocchio he would love to live in the world of _My Neighbor Totoro_
@@pinkishhaven5158Thanks, I wanted to share that story as Del Toro despite being known for his work in Horror, Dark Fantasy and Monster movies is a very friendly humble guy when off-camera. Not to mention artists did fan art of Del Toro as Totoro.🥰
@@doctorsnakeeater1997 Even Del Toro has mentioned in Interviews that he admires the work of Hayao Miyazaki and was one of Del Toro’s influences for the creation of some of his films, such as _Pan’s Labyrinth, The Shape of Water_ and his stop-Motion version of _Pinocchio._ Speaking of _Pinocchio,_ in an interview he had with Jimmy Fallon while promoting his stop-motion version of _Pinocchio,_ he mentioned Miyazaki’s quote _"If you animate the Ordinary it would be Extraordinary."_ and that resonated with del Toro during the behind the scenes process of _Pinocchio_
When Hannibal said that the connection went both ways it becomes clear that the two kaiju that came through were specifically designed to fight Cherno, Typhoon, and Striker. Their weaknesses were shown to them by Newton but not Gyspy as when Newton drifted it was still not an active jeager
And the last three was also made specifically to beat gipsy and striker since we all know the kaiju's are a hive mind they must have known about gipsy being commissioned again by the fight of leatherback and otachi
Oh heck, yeah. That line also soo fucking awesome and iconic. I would totally prefer to be in a Yeager rather than on the ground and died there. I really do hope that one day they will make a third film to round of the story.
@@danielwhyatt3278i hope they make a third movie to make up for the absolute dogwater second movie we got, like i dont understand how they went to wrong, they had an amazing setup for the return of the kaijus through the scientists who drifted, but they just undid the entire first movie which just pours a gallon of salt in our eyes
Fun fact, how they designed the monsters was in two stages. They made a first version where it abided one rule: a human had to fit inside of it. Since this was inspired by the man-in-suit monsters of Japan, the design would not pass if it could not be realistically made into a costume for someone to wear. That’s why the designs look so alien despite feeling so organic. The second version was when they added real anatomical efficiency to the creatures based on real animals. That concept art we see from the film are from the second stage, so it makes me curious as to what the first stage concept art looked like.
just to explain: The Martial Combat test in the middle of the film to find Raleigh's co pilot doesn't seek to find the best fighter, it seeks to see which is the most compatible with the other person. If someone defeated Raleigh without raleigh getting a single hit, that meant that that guy could read Raleigh's head but Raleigh couldn't read his. that meant they're not compatible as they need both pilots to havethe same mind. same would be for if Raleigh beat the other person. Mako and Raleigh got a hit back and forth and that showed how balanced and how compatible they are. what the test seeks is a tie.
also, there has to be a balance. if one pilot was too much more skilled than the other pilot, they won't be able to sync, their skills needed to be at a comparable level, even if they weren't exactly equal
Probably the greatest midnight premiere experience I've ever had. Me and my two cousins barely coudl find seats acuse the theater eas so packed and hyped up. The moment Gypsy squared off against Knifehead made everyone shout in anticipation. What a great memory that was
I love how the movie straight up opened with “there are monsters, we have robots, they fight. Any questions? Good!” It goes all in in the Kaiju genre and doesn’t shy away from it, doesn’t pretend to be something else, and that’s why it works
Lmao just wrong again in another reaction. This movie is great because it loves what it is and understands that it’s great and can make what it is great- literally doing what you described is why the second one is so terrible.
@@Souledex I feel like I’m taking crazy pills. We’re saying the same thing: the movie knows exactly what it is and doesn’t shy away from it. It understands the genre and that’s why it’s great.
This was a kaiju/giant mech film I never knew I wanted. Back when this film was released, my family and I saw it on the big screen and it was freaking epic! With the lack of monster films in the west, Pacific Rim was the greatest thing to get me back into the monster cinema genre. I actually found myself watching it twice with my church members and it still held up. One of the best cinematic experiences of my life!
@@jemal999 even though they didn't kiss it doesn't necessarily mean that their bond was not romantic, their relationship in the movie was actually rather ambiguous, they became close friends & partners who really cared about each other, but there were also some hints throughout the movie that suggested that they might've also had romantic feelings for each other. And there was a comic book series that was released after the first movie that served as a sequel to the movie, and in the comics Raleigh & Mako got married & had a child together. So at least in the comics their relationship was definitely romantic, but it's not 100% clear in the first movie.
not necessarily, just because they didn't kiss in the movie does not mean their relationship wasn't romantic, they could very well had romantic feelings for each other, they simply just didn't express it, there were romantic undertones to their bond in the first movie, it's just not 100% clear. And in the non canon sequel comics Raleigh and Mako got married.
@@jemal999 They shot a kiss, and then shot one without it. So it was definitely on the creators minds and the fact that they went without it is clearly a choice. I think the most important part of the emphasis is that drifting with someone is a more intimate experience than a person has ever had. Whatever they feel for each other they both know and understand it, they are possibly even too close to be lovers as strange as that is to say.
If anyone here hasn't read the novelization I highly recommend it. It's not as epic as the movie but has much more lore. For example, 53:29-53:38, the first Kaiju ever wasn't killed by tanks. It was killed by SEVERAL nuclear bombs. Until the Mark 1 Jaigurs were complete EVERY Kaiju had only been killed by a series of nukes. This was Slaturn, the first ever category 5 Kaiju. And you're surprised ONE nuke didn't stop it? Another fun sample. Part of the reason Pentacost ended up taking Mako in was that her father's family, traditional Japanese sword-makers, didn't want a girl. Brings a whole new meaning to the chainswords Mako gave Gipsy Danger.
@@ZarrarAAli If you've gathered differently from the wider lore I'm not going to say you're wrong. I was just repeating what I remember from the novelization.
Fun facts about the movie! Jaeger pilots were actually trained to inflict minimum damage as they could to the cities( i.e., the part where Eureka shoots the kaiju where theres no buildings when it falls , gypsy walking over the bridge) according to one of the books its why pilots preffered to fight on open water, bc they could allow themselves to go HAM with it Striker Eureka was actually going to be the main character, but it was scrapped bc he looked too fancy and "main character ish* , so they went for a more battle worn one like gypsy Jaegers seem to actually have have some sense of themselves( yes the machines, example: gypsy *flinches* when they get acid thrown on her, typhoon shakes their head when they get thrown down ), and some have been known to even move or twitch when their pilots are asleep, meaning in a slight way theyre still connected Adding to the prev one, pilots can actually tell sometimes when something"feels weird " whiting the machinery on the inside (lose cables?screws? Dirt, rust and blood stuck somewhere? Yep they feel it, apperently its like an itch that wont go away) Guillermo actually wanted to cast a set of 4 identical chinesse girls for crimson typhoon and give it 4 pairs of arms, making it in a total of 8 and instead of a "fox* motif use a spider one for it, they apparently couldn't even find two sets of twins that even looked alike enough so he settled for tripplets (lol ) There was going to be a latam jaeger, named "Obsidian jaguar"(i think in honor of the "obsidian mirror god",that could turn himself into a jaguar) it didn't make to final cut, but they used the idea in a way, later on Pilots movements where directed to be slow and even sluggish, because they themselves where supposed to be moving a 8000 pound machine, they really nailed it because it does look lije the jaegers are making 8000 pounds of dammage with their hits Gypsys and eurekas designs where more "modern" , with more human like features and movements ( cherno doesnt have fully movable hands, and crimson has blades for hands+it could do that thing with its waist) this was because that way pilots could connect better with them, and not feel so *out of skin*.
I think Del Torro said Stryker was too sharp and edgy to be the main Jaeger, so Gipsy was chosen. Also, I think you meant tons and not pounds. Something that I feel should be mentioned is that the weights for the Jaegers have been massively updated. Gipsy used to be about 2000 tons, which makes no sense since a tank can weigh 60 tons, and this thing is several thousand times bigger. It has been updated to 44,781 tons now. I haven't checked the other Jaegers or the Kaiju, but it makes me wonder what changed. Did people just get annoyed with the inconsistent weights? Did Beecham change the actual lore and retcon the weights himself?
@@theminerwithin9316You know I was so confused when Newt talks about a Kaiju as "2500 tons of awesome". My immediate thought was "I am pretty sure it would be much heavier than that"
This film is such a fun romp and literally it’s like if you take Neon Genesis Evangelion, Godzilla/Kaiju Films and Guillermo Del Toro’s love of Anime/Manga (Go Nagai, Katsuhiro Otomo, Hideshi Hino, Naoki Urasawa, Hayao Miyazaki) mixed it in a blender and you get _Pacific Rim_ I would love to see you guys along with the Girls to react to Guillermo Del Toro’s other movies sooner than later following your reaction to _Pacific Rim: Uprising_ such as _Cronos, Mimic, The Devil’s Backbone (El espinazo del diablo), Crimson Peak_ and _The Shape of Water_ along with the _Kingsman_ films and _Scott Pilgrim vs. The World_
I also found it interesting that the Kaijus were very ocean looking esque before Newt tapped in. It’s like they saw what existed on the surface and was like, “We need a gorilla, crocodile, and a bat kaiju.”
I hate that it's brought up in relation to Stegosaurus needing two brains. Something that is a myth and was debunked as complete bullshit a long, long time ago. As someone that quite likes dinosaurs and paleontology as a hobby, it makes me roll my eyes every time that scene comes up.
34:12 I saw this in cinemas a decade ago when it came out, and it wasn't until NOW that I realised the reason the kaiju are getting better at killing Jaegers is the same reason there's an early double event. When the humans win, the hive mind remembers how it happened. Can't believe I never caught on to that before.
And then the Kaiju groupie who "happens" to have studied ALL the remaining Jaegers does the whole hookup thing (remember, it goes both ways)... and the very next attack is by multiple Kaiju, specifically targeting weaknesses they did not previously know about. I always wanted to see more reaction to that. If it happened that way in the real world (like in 1942 when a congressman bragging about our Pac Fleet subs said the Japs could not hit them because the Japanese depth charges were always set too shallow) we would see a much larger response from the higher chain of command (near instant deactivation of the Jaeger force for one)
When this was in theaters I took my friend and her two young children to see it. Her oldest son, he was in middle school at the time and into Transformers, was like "awww Pacific Rim, what's that about?" Had no idea what this movie was, had never heard of it, and the entire movie neither of those children got up to go to the bathroom, they were in awe of the spectacle i think every kid should watch a movie in theaters that either involves giant robots, giant monsters, or both in the same film, at least once before high-school
As a lifelong kaiju/Godzilla fan this was such a badass movie. You can tell the love from Del Toro is on the screen. It's a shame the franchise couldn't really build on top of this world better cause the sequel is a disappointment but the Netflix series was actually pretty decent if not short lived. One detail i really love is how after Newt drifts with the kaiju hive, the kaijus resemble animals like gorillas and birds of prey because they would learn more from Newt
If you look closely at the head of the baby kaiju that broke out of the womb when the pregnant one was killed, it’s head resembles the gorilla-like one that came out of the Breach with it. I’m pretty sure the gorilla kaiju was the father of the pregnant kaiju’s baby. While there’s a good chance that their creators just put its DNA inside the other to cause the pregnancy, there’s a chance they may have actually mated, which would be… horrifying.
Fun fact, Glados from portal is the voice for the computer system in this movie. 😂 But yes I LOVE this movie and one thing I appreciate even though it does the fights only happen at night in rain, you actually can still see the whole entire fight, especially with the natural lighting. I also love how Mako and Reily came out as stronger friends instead of going straight for lovers clichè.
I wouldn't say there weren't scenes that insinuated a romantic relationship anywhere in the film (for instance, the scene where Raleigh says that he hadn't really thought about the future until "now" and is looking straight at Mako, which I read as him seeing a future with her or something of the sort), but I like the fact that they didn't go full Hollywood romance with it and made it more subtle - only giving us hints here and there as to their literal unspoken bond, which made the dynamic seem more realistic to me.
Raleigh and Mako definitely are romantic, but it's very subtle because their relationship is not the focus of the film. Also the psychological intimacy that drifting establishes means that they can completely do away with the cliche romantic tropes. But Raleigh and Mako were for sure completely taken with each other from their very first meeting.
You guys would really enjoy the DVD extras. Del Toro talks about the shots, and how he gave the robots and kiju weight, and what he chose to make practically vs what what computer animated. I think you would find the whole thing fascinating.
To his day, My favorite Sci-Fi movie. I saw this in theaters with my dad when I was 12. I begged him to see it and let me tell you, the best thing i ever begged for haha. Del Toro really knows how to make movies!!!
Never seen Nobu this immersed in a reaction. This is why i love this movie, when it came out expectations were low. But it wasn't dumb action and CGI. That's Guillermo del toro for you
Incase no one has said it. The Cockpits where physical 2 story tall sets built on a gimbal. Meaning those shifts and those slams in a direction where ACTUALLY happening on set. Toro sent those actors through hell and back for those shots.
@@whitenoisereacts as they said "the drift goes both ways". If anyone was going to test this... it should never have been someone directly involved in the project.
I remember when this movie came out. It was a very tough time for my family. My parents were not living together and would argue a lot. My dad would have me and my siblings on the weekends. One night our dad decided to take us to the movies and my brother really wanted to watch this movie. I’m glad we did because watching this movie on the big screen was sooo awesome as a lil teen, this movie will always have a special part in my heart.
This movie is amazing at putting to scale the Kaiju and the Jaegers. Every movement and hit shows the massive weight behind these things. Also remember the Jaegers cost a ton of money and take time to build. The rate of Kaiju attacks is increasing outpacing the rate at which Jaegers can be built, not to mention the financial strain it is putting on the world economy. If I remember correctly, it is mentioned that rationing of food and supplies on the Pacific Rim is occurring.
fun fact two actors who played vamps in blade 2 are in this, ron perlman, & santiago segura, Ron played reinhardt and santiago played rush, the vamp blade let go and later killed at the end.
I know you guys watched the monsterverse movies awhile back but it would be interesting to see you guys rewatch them with the girls this time not only to see their reaction to the movies but also see whether or not your opinions has changed towards them compare to how your first reaction. If not those movies a monster movie I definitely recommend a reaction to is called "Big Ass Spider" it's about a exterminator joining forces with the military to stop a giant mutant spider that's causing destruction around Los Angeles. Pretty good , really funny movie that doesn't take itself too seriously sort of like Rampage.
the music composer is "ramin djawadi". he also gave us the best iron man soundtrack of all time in iron man 1. the music when tony suits up to fly to gulmira.
This movie, Burning Gundam vs Master Gundam, and Gundamn Epyon going ham are some of my favorite Big Mech pieces. Seeing this in theaters and feeling that weight of contact and movement was just amazing.
In the special features, Del Toro described how he wanted the animation of Leatherback (the gorilla one) coming out of the water to resemble how he looks coming out of the bathtub 😂
The absolute best damn part of this movie for me, even ten years later, is the sound design You can *feel* these damn things making every step, crashing around, beating each other, the weight behind even just a finger curling or a jaw closing It feels real, mad goddamn props to del toro for it
My favorite thing about this movie, aside from the phenomenal creature and mech designs, is the pure, unadulterated JOY and love that you can see went into it. They didn’t have to go so hard, they didn’t have to make it so freaking good, painstakingly adding true weight, brilliant watershed effects, and hilarious random details like the objects falling out of the cargo containers…..but they did. Guillermo did his forefathers justice with this one. It’s a love letter to so many genres of film and television, so beautifully married into one glorious concerto of badassery and mayhem. Chef’s kiss💖
This movie one off is such a gem, I think it's such a good and underated movie, wish they did a sequel or prequel though about the characters presented in this movie.
When it came out in the cinema I was scared because I thought, as usual, here's HW butchering my fave anime (Gundam) but then I found out that del Toro loves anime and made this movie as an inspiration and he did really good!
I like to think Pacific Rim and Edge of Tomorrow take place in the same universe. Heck, I could even see Apex Cybernetics using Pacific Rim tech to help build Mechagodzilla in Godzilla Vs. Kong and is how they even learned about how to use Ghidorah's brainwaves. :) By the way, Tom Cruise's War of the Worlds and Edge of Tomorrow are also other good monster movie suggestions, if you have not yet seen them.
When I first watched it in theater with my family and student exchange friend, it was totally epic. We freaking love it. I was so immersed especially with the Jaegers, how cool they look, their design and weapons. It's visual effects are just amazing. There are scenes that just make me feel like I'm actually in it, such as when Striker approaches the Kaiju in Sydney and delivering the punches; as well as when Gipsy walks overhead of the camera in the street in Hong Kong searching for Otachi Kaiju. The effects just make it feel like I'm actually one of the people on the rooftop watching the fight or standing in the street and filming a real big robot walking over me. Along with Godzilla, this is one of the best monster movies.
I know you lot may not see this, HUGE FAN of your channel, but this is my favorite movie next to the LOTR Trilogy: -SO the reason why people didn't live in the centres of countries is because those areas became so expensive to live in because they were safer and the coasts on the Rim were cheapest or cost nothing because they were technically no go zones. -The reason why The Wall became a plot point was because Del Toro said in an interview "it's something stupid that a group of politicians would suggest". -Alot of this movie was practical effects. They only made one cockpit and just changed the lighting to help you think this was a different yeagar i.e. Blue for Gipsy, Green for Cherno Alpha, Red for Crimson Typhoon, Orange and light blue for Striker etc. -The inspiration for a lot of the movies designs were made because Del Toro had all the concept artists be cut off from any outside influences by all of them going down into his personal design studio he named "The Submarine" so that they could make completely original designs. -The reason why they didn't use the sword earlier in the fight was because of Kaiju Blue blood toxicity. In the Year One comic the Jaeger pilots were trained to not spill too much blood because it would make the area uninhabitable otherwise. They should have mentioned it in the movie but they did in the novel I think. -In the beginning the aircraft that was destroyed by the Kaijus tail actually had Idris Elbas (Stacker) sister in there. Her best friend and Stacker became pilots together but she during the defense of Tokyo (as seen in the drift) she passed out from radiation sickness and Stacker was forced to pilot Coyote Tango himself. Because of their illnesses that was the last time they piloted together. -They originally wanted Mako to speak nothing but Japanese in the original draft and as the movie progressed as the more Raleigh and Mako drifted they began speaking each others languages. Sadly this was scrapped and was utilised in another comic book story called Tales of the Drift (worth the read) -Slattern (the final boss category 5 Kaiju) is bigger than Godzilla. If Big G could survive a nuclear blast so could Slattern I suppose. - Stupidest thing said in this movie "They have two brains like a dinosaur" Dinosaurs never had second brains. - Stupidest thing about this movie: 6 helicopters pulling a robot that weighs 1,980 tonnes...sure Jan. -I thoroughly love this franchise because it so character rich and every part of this world drips with detail. Yeah it's monsters fighting robots but Del Toro said "so does that mean it can't have depth?". Every single character feels real, different people from different walks of life coming together to save the world, a lot fo the fight scenes were taken from a helicopter POV or bystander viewpoint and the robots have actual weight to their movements and directors usually avoid dark fight scenes but Del Toro and his team nialed it. PLus one of the few movies where we Australians are properly represented as the badasses we are :P (I have a Striker Eureka tattoo) Thanks for reading! Have a great day!
Forgetting the second movie, the first Pacific Rim is an underrated gem. It was well-directed, and I cared for all the characters because the stakes were so high.
There was no second movie, mate. Only some poorly made concept art that one day might be turned into something worth to be called 'a movie' or even better 'a sequel' by an equally worthy producer. But as of now, there is no sequel, no second movie.
This is my favorite movie of all time. No matter how many times I watch it it’s never not fun and Pentecost’s speech always gets me pumped. And Herc’s last words to his son and then him telling Pentecost “That’s my son. My son.” Literally makes me cry every single time
I love this movie so much,i think i watched it more than 100 times since 2013.the human perspective gives it realistic vibes and also the casualties like road breaking and people actually dying and vfx looks good in the night and mechanical sounds then the water physics.i hope they make a prequel where we can see cherno alpha, crimson typhoon in more action and more fights.
I would definitely check out the sequel. Unfortunately, it's a different director and it shows. The main issue I had with it is that the Jagers don't have as much weight to them as they did in this movie. They move more like Transformers in the sequel. But it's still a fun movie and that last fight is really cool.
It's like the makers thought the Jaegers for sequel would be the new generation & lightweight efficiency something. Unfortunately that means making Jaegers weaker in exchange for improvement & the disconnect of visual weight & impact in action.
@@changsangma1915 plus, you don't really get the same feel when they fight in the day. At night, all the lights and small details show. The new Jaegers moved insanely fast, but the Gipsy Avenger weighed nearly 3 times less than the Gipsy Danger. It's easy to see why they were getting tossed like ragdolls.
back again and to add a bit of background. Yes Striker was the only other pilot to ever solo fight a Kaiju. Specifically it was during the Tokyo attack by the Kaiju Onibaba. Strikers co-pilot was knocked out and Striker had to finish the fight. I cant remember where but it was a back and forth between Oni and Coyote Tango, the Jaeger he piloted, and not the normal 10 to 20 minute knock out fight. From what I heard, could be misremembering, it was a 7 HOUR back and forth battle, and thats just the time Striker had to solo pilot Coyote.
Has anyone suggested The Host (2006)? That's a great modern monster movie. I still hold hope for the seeing the original Godzilla on the channel. The rest of the Showa era movies are aimed more towards kids. Especially as the series goes along. Although, I think the last movie in that era, Terror of Mechagodzilla (1975), is actually up there with the first film (it also has Godzilla's best entrance). There are some good Godzilla movies in the Heisei and Millenium eras, too. I grew up in a time and place where they showed a lot of kaiju movies on TV. I remember watching Gamera on Saturday mornings. They are truly horrible. But, the movies that came out in the Heisei era are miles above the originals. One more kaiju that's less known outside of Japan, Daimajin. There's a trilogy of movies. They are kind of interchangeable but it's generally acknowledged that the second one's the best.
INSANE movie, I love the concept and it really immersed me when I saw it in imax, I was freaking out. This filmmaking really reminds me of real steel but the monsters in this movie are so unique with vivid colors used everywhere in all settings. Love the appreciation you all show for this and every movie, keep up the great reactions!!
Loved this movie, one of my fave actions. But, funny enough, not because of the giant monsters and robots, but because of those two science bros, what a beautifull characters!
Best jaeger is definitely Gypsey Danger but I will say they had some amazing designs for all of them I really love this movie one of my favorite monster movies super excited to see the reaction and we got the ladies on this one yay 🤍 funny thing is I’m typing this as the trailer for the meg 2 is playing I really can’t wait for that reaction hopefully we get one 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 Three megs this time gonna be epic
You know, it’s funny. I saw this movie when it first came out, and right before the wing reveal, I thought to myself, “hey, that things walks kinda like how we thought pterosaurs walked.”
So, one of my favorite details in the movie, which is so easy to overlook, is that Gypsy Danger's AI voice actor is the same one that voiced GLaDOS in the Portal games. I love that extra little attention to detail, getting one of the most recognizable AI voice actors at the time to play the AI in this movie. Also, for direct anime references, Gipsy Danger's eyes were a direct reference to the glasses worn by a character named Kamina in the mech anime Gurren Lagann.
Response to Stella wondering why the coastal cities are still populated. In Australia...the inland would be best described as inhospitable. Even compared to possible Kaiju attack.
I also imagine most of the rich folks left the coastal cities for greener pastures and it was borderline free real estate for poorer folks unfortunately.
Guillermo Del Toro is my favorite director. I definitely wouldn't say he's a very serious and contemplative director. What he IS is a big teddy bear of a man. Warm, kind, full of enthusiasm and wonder. He finds beauty in monsters and misfits and dark fairy tales, and so that's OVERWHELMINGLY what he makes. - Pan's Labyrinth and The Shape Of Water are dark fairy tales of outcasts misfits and monsters. - Pacific Rim is a celebration of mecha and kaiju. - Hell Boy is a monstrous outcast hero living in a borderline fairy tale version of reality. - Blade II is Guillermo exploring the nature of vampires as monsters by pushing them to their extremes. - Cabinet Of Curiosities is his curated collection of dark little horror tales, covering everything from Victorian Gothic Horror tales to Lovecraftian horrors in the modern day. - Crimson Peak is a Gothic Romance Ghost Story. Not really a horror movie per se, but a ghost story. Sort of exploring a tragic beauty and love story in the context of terrifying ghosts.
Even’s _Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio_ also involved an outcast similar to the protagonists in _Pan’s Labyrinth and Shape of Water_ while _Devil’s Backbone_ also is a ghost story while at the same time dealing with a group of orphaned outcasts dealing with someone who is a tyrant much like _Pan’s Labyrinth_
@@theirishviking9278 I started those, but I didn't get very far. I think it was a bit too much for kids for me. But it was fairly good. I think I was hoping for more of something along the lines of Avatar The Last Airbender, or The Legend Of Korra, or ThunderCats 2011.... Something darker and more serious and gritty. It just feels like troll hunters was the perfect idea for Guillermo del Toro, but then he had to make the safety scissors version of that show. I think it was less edgy and dramatic than like How To Train Your Dragon. 🤷🏻♂️
Mexican Jaeguer, Matador Fury (Daniel Muñez and Santiago La Cruz): was launched on January 9, 2017 as the first unit in the mark III line of jaegers. She was stationed at the Lima Shatterdome along with Diablo Intercept and Solar Prophet. Designed as the first and last jaeger with a nuclear ejection system, Matador Fury could technically still incinerate kaiju, even if her reactor was breached and due to the danger of this rather "explosive" system and politicians twiddling their thumbs, plus a hefty amount of bureaucracy, Matador was to be only deployed in remote areas, intercepting kaiju in an "early-engagement." This led to both pilots being separated from their fellow Lima Shatterdome colleagues and giving Matador an almost "mysterious" persona for a jaeger. Surprisingly Matador managed to rack up an impressive kill count of five kaiju, four being solo missions before her destruction in early 2024.
OH. OH MY GOD. I ASKED FOR THIS MOVIE AND YOU GUYS ACTUALLY WATCHED IT AAAAA.i definitely always think of Evangelion and Gundam. But i will NEVER watch the second one.
There is an Anime series called 'Knights and Magic' which combines magic, mechs and Monsters which i think you might enjoy watching in your spare time.
YES!! LOVE THIS MOVIE! Godzilla Vs Gundam! A sequel, Pacific Rim 2: Uprising, was released in 2018, but it was not well received by Critics or fans of the original. It made $290 million dollars against a $150 million dollar budget.
It’s kinda funny that Raleigh knows martial arts, considering he was never trained in them, and specifically mentions that the only thing him and his bro could do is take a beating😂😂
Well no, what he says is him and his brother were always good in a fight. Meaning they got into LOTS of fights growing up and ended up pretty good at it. As far as the martial arts... it's possible that that kind of trial is a normal thing for jäger candidates for drifting, or Raleigh picked it up during the five years between Yancy dying and his rejoining the program.
I thought Martial arts would be one of the things that the pilots would be trained in not because they have to do hand-to-hand combat but because it would help with endurance. They would have to be much stronger than the average human. Also it helps with figuring out who could be the perfect drift partner, as it did with Raleigh and Mako.
@@sladewilson9718 was that mentioned somewhere? I haven't read the book yet. But after the Mark 1 program they seem to have made a lot of upgrades so I would think martial arts would be one of them so that the pilots could be at peak physical health and to also figure out who would be compatible with who.
@bhargavipba I didn't know there was a book. It was more of an assumption based on the film tbh. You could definitely be right tho. It just seemed a bit out of place when he went out of his way to tell us he couldn't fight but he could take a punch 😂
Don't know how I missed this! The staple of how monster mash movies should be done; the actors having fun hamming it up, the action being a clear spectacle, the monsters being an interesting threat, and the scifi being well thought out in worldbuilding. Never thought about the anime inspirations, but yeah it's pretty obvious in hindsight lol. While I'm glad it got a sequel, I got less positive things to say about that so I'll withhold them for now.
Since you mentioned references here are some for you to see the homage Del Toro did to the classic Go Nagai Super Robot genre. It is a movie certainly made for people who enjoy anime about mechas and kaijus and all that surrounding Japanese culture, so it is not for all audiences, to me in particular I watched it at the cinema when it came out back in the distant 2013, without having seen a single trailer and without knowing anything about the movie, I just looked at a poster and said "wow that looks interesting" because I'm a fan of that kind of things, and no doubt I enjoyed it as if I was 7 years old again, today I am a grown man and I still enjoy it as I did the first time I saw it 10 years ago.

You may not believe it but this movie actually went really well in the theaters when it came out and was really well received. People thoroughly enjoyed it. And I believe it was one of the better movies of that year
yeah it did prty good domesticdally and made a lot of money internationally. That's why it got the underwhelming sequel XD

Very true. As I understand, it was Guillermo Del Toro’s highest grossing film ever.
Here’s a cute behind the scenes story the four of you might find not know and will enjoy, but Mana Ashida, who played young Mako could not pronounce Guillermo del Toro’s last name, so she asked if she could call him “Totoro-san,” as a reference to the titular character in Studio Ghibli's _"My Neighbor Totoro"._
Funny enough in a recent Oscar interview following Del Toro’s win of his animated take on Pinocchio he would love to live in the world of _My Neighbor Totoro_
omg this is so cute. Thank you for that info
To be fair he kind of can, since My Neighbor Totoro is just rural Japanese countryside... Albeit with some supernatural friendly fuzzies
@@pinkishhaven5158Thanks, I wanted to share that story as Del Toro despite being known for his work in Horror, Dark Fantasy and Monster movies is a very friendly humble guy when off-camera. Not to mention artists did fan art of Del Toro as Totoro.🥰

@@ripLunarBirdCLHEither that speech or King Theodens. They fluctuate between first and second best speeches
Probably similar to old Godzilla movies.
just to explain: The Martial Combat test in the middle of the film to find Raleigh's co pilot doesn't seek to find the best fighter, it seeks to see which is the most compatible with the other person.
The main theme of the movie still hits different every time I hear it. Best music if you go for a walk or hit the gym.

Same! Seeing this movie in theatre with my dad is one my most vivid memories from my childhood. Been one of my all time favorite movies ever since.
Agreed. It's now one of my favorite movies.
I like that Raleigh and Mako's strong bond wasn’t a romantic one.
Yes, the fact that they Hug instead of Kiss (like most Action movies would have done), is perfect.
I mean, it was, they just didn't went full lovey dovey.
They didn't nuke it. They used tanks missiles and jets for the first Kaiju. Also I'm pretty sure he was a cat 3.missiles doesn't mean nuclear missiles
Welp Japanese tradition sucks
@@ZarrarAAli If you've gathered differently from the wider lore I'm not going to say you're wrong. I was just repeating what I remember from the novelization.

And the VFX really hold up.
@@JeshuaSquirrel legendary studios VFX is top notch, they also did man of steel and monsterverse (Godzilla trilogy)
Fun facts about the movie!
Jaeger pilots were actually trained to inflict minimum damage as they could to the cities( i.e., the part where Eureka shoots the kaiju where theres no buildings when it falls , gypsy walking over the bridge) according to one of the books its why pilots preffered to fight on open water, bc they could allow themselves to go HAM with it
Striker Eureka was actually going to be the main character, but it was scrapped bc he looked too fancy and "main character ish* , so they went for a more battle worn one like gypsy
Jaegers seem to actually have have some sense of themselves( yes the machines, example: gypsy *flinches* when they get acid thrown on her, typhoon shakes their head when they get thrown down ), and some have been known to even move or twitch when their pilots are asleep, meaning in a slight way theyre still connected
Adding to the prev one, pilots can actually tell sometimes when something"feels weird " whiting the machinery on the inside (lose cables?screws? Dirt, rust and blood stuck somewhere? Yep they feel it, apperently its like an itch that wont go away)
Guillermo actually wanted to cast a set of 4 identical chinesse girls for crimson typhoon and give it 4 pairs of arms, making it in a total of 8 and instead of a "fox* motif use a spider one for it, they apparently couldn't even find two sets of twins that even looked alike enough so he settled for tripplets (lol )
There was going to be a latam jaeger, named "Obsidian jaguar"(i think in honor of the "obsidian mirror god",that could turn himself into a jaguar) it didn't make to final cut, but they used the idea in a way, later on
Pilots movements where directed to be slow and even sluggish, because they themselves where supposed to be moving a 8000 pound machine, they really nailed it because it does look lije the jaegers are making 8000 pounds of dammage with their hits
Gypsys and eurekas designs where more "modern" , with more human like features and movements ( cherno doesnt have fully movable hands, and crimson has blades for hands+it could do that thing with its waist) this was because that way pilots could connect better with them, and not feel so *out of skin*.
My immediate thought was "I am pretty sure it would be much heavier than that"
This film is such a fun romp and literally it’s like if you take Neon Genesis Evangelion, Godzilla/Kaiju Films and Guillermo Del Toro’s love of Anime/Manga (Go Nagai, Katsuhiro Otomo, Hideshi Hino, Naoki Urasawa, Hayao Miyazaki) mixed it in a blender and you get _Pacific Rim_
I would love to see you guys along with the Girls to react to Guillermo Del Toro’s other movies sooner than later following your reaction to _Pacific Rim: Uprising_ such as _Cronos, Mimic, The Devil’s Backbone (El espinazo del diablo), Crimson Peak_ and _The Shape of Water_ along with the _Kingsman_ films and _Scott Pilgrim vs. The World_
I like the detail on how a kaiju needs two brains to function and a jaeger needs two brains also to control it
I also found it interesting that the Kaijus were very ocean looking esque before Newt tapped in. It’s like they saw what existed on the surface and was like, “We need a gorilla, crocodile, and a bat kaiju.”
@@pogofgreed3707 damn good point
@@pogofgreed3707 you're on to something
Additional note: Itachi and leather back were specifically designed to counter
Typhoon, Eureka, and Alpha.
Guillermo del Toro really made a new nuanced form of intense intimacy and total vulnerability and used it as a reason to pilot big robots

But yes I LOVE this movie and one thing I appreciate even though it does the fights only happen at night in rain, you actually can still see the whole entire fight, especially with the natural lighting. I also love how Mako and Reily came out as stronger friends instead of going straight for lovers clichè.
Some movies just want to force different gender characters into lovebirds, which would sort of spoil it especially since they had almost no chemistry.
@@dallasyap3064If you are saying Raleigh and Mako had no chemistry, then I don't think we saw the same film

This movie is amazing at putting to scale the Kaiju and the Jaegers. Every movement and hit shows the massive weight behind these things.

There reactions while fighting the cockpits were 100% practical, they have videos on RUclips of it, its so cool!
I know you lot may not see this, HUGE FAN of your channel, but this is my favorite movie next to the LOTR Trilogy:
-SO the reason why people didn't live in the centres of countries is because those areas became so expensive to live in because they were safer and the coasts on the Rim were cheapest or cost nothing because they were technically no go zones.
Sadly this was scrapped and was utilised in another comic book story called Tales of the Drift (worth the read)
-Slattern (the final boss category 5 Kaiju) is bigger than Godzilla.

Forgetting the second movie, the first Pacific Rim is an underrated gem. It was well-directed, and I cared for all the characters because the stakes were so high.

This is my favorite movie of all time. No matter how many times I watch it it’s never not fun and Pentecost’s speech always gets me pumped. And Herc’s last words to his son and then him telling Pentecost “That’s my son. My son.” Literally makes me cry every single time
I love GlaDOS's ominous voice asking 'Would you like to try again?' when Mako collapsed
Sounds like something GlaDOS would actually say lol
Yeah lol it's almost threatening 🤣
Wow, John Boyega can't get some rest...
@@mr.dumbum8209 Whatever dumb shit you filmed in life, echoes in eternity -some guy named Maximus
What sequel?
back again and to add a bit of background.
This was the first movie I saw in real 3D in theaters and I was obsessed. I made my grandma go see it with me 3 times and each time she humored me 😅
This movie is so freaking awesome!!! That sword part is EPIC 🔥🔥🔥
This is one of my all-time favorite movies. Great reaction by the quartet!
Me and my brother watched this one after it's dvd release, it was awsome and we really need sequels.
Such a good movie. A real shame they never made a sequel.
I’ve never seen you guys sooo into a scene all at once until this movie lol 7:39 I can tell you guys were all truly enjoying it❤
I love that you can feel every hit. It’s just so dang good
I remember seeing this in theaters as a kid with my dad and absolutely loving it 😂 One of my favorite movies of all time
INSANE movie, I love the concept and it really immersed me when I saw it in imax, I was freaking out.
Fun fact, it's actually been 10 years since this came out. It already looked better in 2013 than some blockbusters in 2023.
I love this movie. I love the part where they are dragging that ship down the street and grab it like a baseball bat :D
Something bout Gypsy Danger t posing on the aliens before blowing up radiates chad energy 😂
I still love how it finally took 2 category 4 kaiju's made specifically to counter cherno and crimson.
To finally take down a mark 1 cherno aplha
You know, it’s funny. I saw this movie when it first came out, and right before the wing reveal, I thought to myself, “hey, that things walks kinda like how we thought pterosaurs walked.”
The fearsome 4! HAHA 😅Nice reaction guys! Also i like Stella's background very colorful. 👍🏼
@@thelegendoflivz Agreed. "Beachfront property" not having the appeal it once did.
OMG finally yes! i love pacific rim so much! the main theme and the gypsy danger theme are so awesome.
When robots use cargo ships as bat to beat monsters, you know its epic film.
Pacific Rim Most badass Most underrated Savage Flick of Hollywood

If you haven't already, you need to watch his version of Pinocchio, it's simply brilliant.
Pans Labyrinth has been my favorite film since it's release when I was a teenager 🔥🔥
Don't forget the Troll Hunter series and spin offs
Sounds intriguing. Where did you get the lore from?
OH.
Not to mention it also resulted in Legendary ending its partnership with Universal Pictures (who distributed Uprising) and returning to Warner Bros.
17:20 the problem with test drives is that if some one isn't compatible it can seriously damage or kill one or both pilots.
@bhargavipba It would make sense, but I'm pretty sure the whole training program was implemented after he left.
Gypsy Danger Launch = Mazinger Z Pilder On
Rocket Elbow = Mazinger Z Rocket Punch
Gypsy Danger Chest Burner = Mazinger Z Breast Fire
Gypsy Danger Battle Pose = Robot Jox Achillies vs Alexander
Gypsy Danger Mechanical Walk Mechanism = Same as above
Glad you guys enjoyed the movie. pls check these refernces out.
Once Newton drifted with the Kaiju the Kaiju engineers knew exactly what was needed to take down the 3 Jaegers.
Pacific Rim is a great monster movie.
Gypsy Danger’s walk was based off of John Wayne’s iconic walk in his westerns.
It is a movie certainly made for people who enjoy anime about mechas and kaijus and all that surrounding Japanese culture, so it is not for all audiences, to me in particular I watched it at the cinema when it came out back in the distant 2013, without having seen a single trailer and without knowing anything about the movie, I just looked at a poster and said "wow that looks interesting" because I'm a fan of that kind of things, and no doubt I enjoyed it as if I was 7 years old again, today I am a grown man and I still enjoy it as I did the first time I saw it 10 years ago.
damn, stella is lookin fiiiiine
