As someone who understand how hard a battle against a severe disease can be, the part where he talks about his cancer and death were very emotional, I am so happy that his cancer is in remission, I mean if anyone deserve to be in good health it's a man who has worked so hard to change humanity like this guy. What a beautiful talk. This is the first time I have heard a discussion of the difference between AI and humanity that identifies one of great differences between machines and humans. As we reach toward Strong and Super strong AI, we are at risk of being caught up in a wave of reductionism and depair. Who are we when computers can do everything better than we humans? We have eliminated our justification for being - as we know it now. Dr Kai-Fu Lee has inspired us break out of reductionism and materialism as a limiting definition of humanity, to embrace our capacity for love, compasssion and creativity. Thank you sir. I am inspired.
A lot of those 'compassionate jobs' shown in the chart are currently very badly paid at minimum wage levels. Will society see the value in them to pay them enough? I agree with the speaker that these jobs should be valued and expanded - but they will need to well paid or no one will do them. Not everyone will be capable of undertaking more highly paid creative/strategic jobs, and I doubt there would be a case for increasing the number of those jobs significantly. Consider the care system for the older people in society. Currently our old people are rotting away in 'care' homes, or even their own homes, with very little 'compassionate' human contact. Ignoring their families, those 'caring' for them are low paid and unmotivated; the environments they work in are falling apart and there isn't enough money in the system to give our older people the quality of life they deserve. There is an imbalance in relation to where society's 'wealth' is going. Wealth currently is sitting in the top 1-3% in society rather than being fairly distributed to create a better quality of life for all. In the coming decades, this redistribution of wealth will have to happen to avoid extreme social strife.

Humans also learn from the environment, past, etc. For example, nobody was trying to push semiconductor chips to 2nm 1000 years ago, because they didn't exist. Nobody was so creative that they will suddenly jump to this technology 1000 years ago. It is incremental progress by millions of people. Similarly, there were child sacrifice rituals that were considered normal because these rituals evolved with time and the people practicing these rituals were trained to think of them as normal. Social progress was also slow and each new generation changes something. Revolutionary changes happened when one group of people transferred their knowledge to another.

But I think that even in this model, the people at the bottom is always improving their situation every year and I hope to see one day, that the poorest person in the world can live with what would be today the minimum standard of a decent life.

Sweeping a street can be meditative and give you a feeling of accomplishment, and a lot of potters and glass blowers like what they do. The tragedy is people having to do things they don't like. I think AI and an universal basic income can solve this. And in this scenario humans should do the work they like, regardless of the fact that machines can do a better job :-)
One of the best TED talks. He really touched something deep inside me. My field of expertise is philosophy but I really think that science and humanities need to work together. An interdisciplinary approach is nowadays required more than ever.

I believe that for the human race to fully enjoy the benefits of AI, and without significantly lowering the quality of life, then either of two things must happen: Human beings must become exceptionally creative Human population must reduce drastically But with increasing creativity, there is a corresponding improvement in AI which is a result of man's creativity. Eventually, the population will give in or quality of life will drastically decrease.
I am not sure about 2nd point: population stress should be relieved by going out space while living a lesser greener lifestyle for all, not the luxury waste life people looking forward to like shown in the movies

"AI can optimize but not create." - Well, I'd be careful here. If an optimisation brings up a solution that was unknown before, than by combining them new applications arise. Creativity of man is not a optimisation problem but with the speed of processed data, AI can behave like it is creative and create similar results. The term: "AI cannot create, is one that I'd be careful with."
AI can't create, even if it does assimilate our process of creativity. In a nutshell, creativity is human because it's a humans' concept. Only humans can communicate and sympathize with humans in that sense. As soon as a machine tries to create art, for instance, it would only be art for the machines, not for humans, even if we manage to appreciate AI's capabilities of mixing colours and textures to deliver a message. And TBH, that would only happen If AI ever develops consciousness as a self, as a species. In the meantime, all AI advancements will be human, and thus if they create, that would be a human trait it has copied, and we can take advantage of it to keep creating and communicating in ways yet to known. The future is AI, we will become AIs, we're constantly giving and seeking love because we want to survive (reproduce). we need eternity as a species. While I respect and agree with many points Kai-Fu Lee makes in this talk, I take issue with his closing comments about AI and love. First of all, even if none of the AIs hitherto created did in fact have a concept of love, this says nothing about future AIs being able to love. Making it a uniquely human emotion might be a failure of perspective. Sure, our human take on love might be unique indeed, but the assumption that non-human entities cannot feel it is dangerously chauvinistic. Secondly, the fact that Alpha Go did nothing in the way of expressing happiness or excitement does not necessarily mean it "felt" nothing. The understanding of its complete internal state and its idiosyncratic modes of expression (including, possibly, emotional ones) might be well beyond our cognitive powers, especially given our strong bias for searching human traits in other forms of intelligence. Don't get me wrong. I love humanity and savor our uniqueness. But I don't think or feel we are, nor can be, the only ones in the area of values and emotions.

It won't be an easy, unless legislators themselves react beforehand. If a country like India had universal basic income where would the money come from, India doeesn't have any of the big players in AI AND it basically depends on the west to fuel many of it's workforce, if the west decreases it's need for these repetitive jobs, there might a lot of suffering. I hope evevrything ends up ok. All the nations of the world would have to come together to share the collective growth in wealth.
AI can't create without human input any more than assembly line robots can. Humans can feed their creative input (ideas, problems, examples) into algorithms and then humans can prompt AI to speed up the task of moving pixels around, and humans can use their creativity to evaluate and tweak, appreciate or reject that output, but that output is meaningless (and therefore, not creative at all) without humans at both ends of the chain. Just like Photoshop cannot create on its own, but it can certainly be used by humans to create digital media that was never possible before. What good is a selection tool that detects edges based on contrast, without a human wanting to select a subject out of a photo and composite it into a new scene? Yes, creative jobs are safe. People like you will be sure to reject soulless AI output, right?

Comparing Photoshop or "algorithms" to deep neural networks tells me you are basing your opinions on things other than minimum knowledge of how these models, or even our brains work. Human was once an AI but learning things from time to time. It’s not we are smart but our cells adapt to it in order to survive hardship conditions. Everything has its pros and cons, love is the same as well as our brain behave on social matters. Loneliness can teach you what you need to be social as a human while create Recognition is what teach you to be logical sense. An AI with the ability to communicate with each other and adapt the environment will become something like us. Love is the very best profession if we are genuine about it. I think that is part of what he is trying to convey. Have an introspective interview with yourself about the course of your life and the time you have left, as he did. Make those choices to sacrifice what matters less for what matters most.
Powerful talk that made me tear up. It's been on mind lately, what is our world going to be when say half of the population is unemployed? How to make systems that people trust and believe in, that can manage such a huge challenge? It's good to realize that we human have something better to do than produce goods, in the form of producing happyness and education. We can be so much more than we are and AIs must help us realize this potential.

How wonderful! The exact reverse of the AI-fearers! Did you spot any of The Terminators in this? Did you see Ava from Ex Machina? Noooo. But, even in the Terminator franchise, at the end of #2, Sarah Connor is musing about "......a machine learning the value of a human life......then, maybe there is hope for us." But a Lee dramatically showed, that sort of AI is far, far away. At 70, I am in a very different world than that of my childhood - but I am not adrift in it, nor am I afraid of this world - or its technology. AI, rock on!
Very good speech! I do believe AI used for the service of humankind can greatly improve our lifestyle, however, at the end of the day, it is the individual that must understand the importance of life and that, can only be achieved through experience and introspection. Having more time at our disposal doesn't necessarily mean becoming wiser because some people might as well choose to waste their extra time accumulating more material wealth than they actually need!
Lots of good points in the talk, but it has some flaws. AI is incredibly dangerous (misalignment problem), and his actual story "a more productive economy means we can do less work" has already happend, and failed. He also undermined his own story by saying that he still works just about as hard as he did previously.

I think we need to be careful here: the tragedy is not people performing tasks that a machine can do better. Sweeping a street can be meditative and give you a feeling of accomplishment, and a lot of potters and glass blowers like what they do.
The tragedy is people having to do things they don't like.
I think AI and an universal basic income can solve this.
And in this scenario humans should do the work they like, regardless of the fact that machines can do a better job :-)
One of the best TED talks. He really touched something deep inside me. My field of expertise is philosophy but I really think that science and humanities need to work together. An interdisciplinary approach is nowadays required more than ever.

I believe that for the human race to fully enjoy the benefits of AI, and without significantly lowering the quality of life, then either of two things must happen:
Human beings must become exceptionally creative
Human population must reduce drastically
But with increasing creativity, there is a corresponding improvement in AI which is a result of man's creativity. Eventually, the population will give in or quality of life will drastically decrease.
I am not sure about 2nd point: population stress should be relieved by going out space while living a lesser greener lifestyle for all, not the luxury waste life people looking forward to like shown in the movies
i dont think we can fully grasp what an intelligent machine will do or think.
Creativity is also out of the memory we hold and we are no match to AGI in that sense. The only thing that humans should do to remain relevant is to achieve consciousness through meditation. AGI is on the way and a lot of things are being kept as secrets to avoid panic in societies. The level of automation that is being adopted by the world gives a chilling experience of this

"AI can optimize but not create." - Well, I'd be careful here. If an optimisation brings up a solution that was unknown before, than by combining them new applications arise.
Creativity of man is not a optimisation problem but with the speed of processed data, AI can behave like it is creative and create similar results.
The term: "AI cannot create, is one that I'd be careful with."
AI can't create, even if it does assimilate our process of creativity. In a nutshell, creativity is human because it's a humans' concept. Only humans can communicate and sympathize with humans in that sense. As soon as a machine tries to create art, for instance, it would only be art for the machines, not for humans, even if we manage to appreciate AI's capabilities of mixing colours and textures to deliver a message. And TBH, that would only happen If AI ever develops consciousness as a self, as a species. In the meantime, all AI advancements will be human, and thus if they create, that would be a human trait it has copied, and we can take advantage of it to keep creating and communicating in ways yet to known. The future is AI, we will become AIs, we're constantly giving and seeking love because we want to survive (reproduce). we need eternity as a species. Machines are the next step to consolidate that dream since our planet is dying, the only way to keep fighting is becoming immortal machines. The Matrix will be real. K?.. bye.

This speech on "what's next for humanity" echos a prescient article by Keynes back in the 1930s titled "Economic Possibilities for our Grandchildren".
Most of people work hard and burn out not because they identify with their job, but because they need to support themselves and their families.
As for compassion workers -- 1 out of 1000 wants to work with homeless and elderly.
While I respect and agree with many points Kai-Fu Lee makes in this talk, I take issue with his closing comments about AI and love. First of all, even if none of the AIs hitherto created did in fact have a concept of love, this says nothing about future AIs being able to love. Making it a uniquely human emotion might be a failure of perspective. Sure, our human take on love might be unique indeed, but the assumption that non-human entities cannot feel it is dangerously chauvinistic. Secondly, the fact that Alpha Go did nothing in the way of expressing happiness or excitement does not necessarily mean it "felt" nothing. The understanding of its complete internal state and its idiosyncratic modes of expression (including, possibly, emotional ones) might be well beyond our cognitive powers, especially given our strong bias for searching human traits in other forms of intelligence. Don't get me wrong. I love humanity and savor our uniqueness. But I don't think or feel we are, nor can be, the only ones in the area of values and emotions.

If a country like India had universal basic income where would the money come from, India doeesn't have any of the big players in AI AND it basically depends on the west to fuel many of it's workforce, if the west decreases it's need for these repetitive jobs, there might a lot of suffering. AI can't create without human input any more than assembly line robots can. Humans can feed their creative input (ideas, problems, examples) into algorithms and then humans can prompt AI to speed up the task of moving pixels around, and humans can use their creativity to evaluate and tweak, appreciate or reject that output, but that output is meaningless (and therefore, not creative at all) without humans at both ends of the chain. Just like Photoshop cannot create on its own, but it can certainly be used by humans to create digital media that was never possible before. What good is a selection tool that detects edges based on contrast, without a human wanting to select a subject out of a photo and composite it into a new scene? Yes, creative jobs are safe. People like you will be sure to reject soulless AI output, right?

Comparing Photoshop or "algorithms" to deep neural networks tells me you are basing your opinions on things other than minimum knowledge of how these models, or even our brains work. I can go to the easy debunk which is humans are now unable to distinguish between artworks generated by other humans or AI. Your argument is cooked already. So you'll say oh this piece of art is sublime, not knowing it's the output of a diffusion transformer that has modeled the human perception of art.
There's nothing special about our brains. It's all neurons networking, there's no magical sauce outside of that. Each person lays within a huge spectrum of creativity, from a lot to a little, right? Now there are synthetic minds there too.

And I think that really makes the point - whether we have a best case or worst case scenario - it's humans who are the ones responsible for that outcome. AI is just a tool. Human was once an AI but learning things from time to time. It’s not we are smart but our cells adapt to it in order to survive hardship conditions. Everything has its pros and cons, love is the same as well as our brain behave on social matters. Loneliness can teach you what you need to be social as a human while create Recognition is what teach you to be logical sense. An AI with the ability to communicate with each other and adapt the environment will become something like us. Species have been evolved for million years so we understand what we are doing now is trying to find how we are working at the beginning of living animal.

What i learn from this speech is, if we teach the AI with love, and positive thinkings, they will do no harm to us , right? since they can mimic us in all ways. Powerful talk that made me tear up.
It's been on mind lately, what is our world going to be when say half of the population is unemployed? How to make systems that people trust and believe in, that can manage such a huge challenge? It's good to realize that we human have something better to do than produce goods, in the form of producing happyness and education.
We can be so much more than we are and AIs must help us realize this potential.
In other words, this new era will teach us, the hard way, that we either give some love, or we're no better than a machine.
It will teach us that we better learn to fight against progressive agendas intending to exterminate and replace us with robots

How wonderful! The exact reverse of the AI-fearers! Did you spot any of The Terminators in this? Did you see Ava from Ex Machina? Noooo. But, even in the Terminator franchise, at the end of #2, Sarah Connor is musing about "......a machine learning the value of a human life......then, maybe there is hope for us." But a Lee dramatically showed, that sort of AI is far, far away. At 70, I am in a very different world than that of my childhood - but I am not adrift in it, nor am I afraid of this world - or its technology. AI, rock on!
Very good speech! I do believe AI used for the service of humankind can greatly improve our lifestyle, however, at the end of the day, it is the individual that must understand the importance of life and that, can only be achieved through experience and introspection. Having more time at our disposal doesn't necessarily mean becoming wiser because some people might as well choose to waste their extra time accumulating more material wealth than they actually need!
Lots of good points in the talk, but it has some flaws. AI is incredibly dangerous (misalignment problem), and his actual story "a more productive economy means we can do less work" has already happend, and failed. He also undermined his own story by saying that he still works just about as hard as he did previously.
This was an especially good talk!
