As a trans woman I cannot even explain how much it means for this message to be broadcasted publicly - especially in a way which shows actual empathy for the trans experience. I happened to come across Anna at a local show that she was opening for. To say I was stunned by her music, which I could describe as nothing other than art, is an understatement. While waking out the back door I happened to run into Anna and her band. I explained that as a trans woman who had recently transitioned I’d thought my days of attending folk and country shows was behind me but that I’d come to this show by myself on a last minute whim and I was blown away. In her ultra kind way she showed her appreciation of love for me as a human and gifted me a copy of this Album. I think she played The Question on set but I hadn’t let the lyrics sink in just yet. It was until I was back at home, listening to the album she’d given me that I realized this song was about a trans woman. Once it hit, I just started crying. She seemed to actually get it and expressed true appreciation for the struggle trans folks live through every day. She is a true artist and an amazing human being. I am a fan for life.
For many years of my artistic journey I was looked down upon because I wasn't the popular rock star or whatever it may be. I'm so glad that artists like Anna exist because it gives me hope. This record label is producing some really good music that is so truthful. For many years I was in prison in the idea of what success is as a musician and now that I'm a violin player I honestly find so much happiness and playing my violin near Creek to an audience of no one. That a success to me.
I often think of myself as a failure as a musician for having low metrics like videos views or album streams. This music video shows me that that stuff don't mean shit. This is art beautifully and perfectly done even if it only has 12,000 views.
Every time I listen to this it moves me to tears, such a beautiful song and video. Sending love out to all the wonderful trans family out there. I don’t know you, but I love you so much. May you live your best life as your authentic self, and be surrounded by supportive and loving people 💗💓💗
Because Tivel's writing is so nearly perfect in this song, the video is inevitably limiting. True poetry and true music are meant to be experienced in the mind and heart of the listener. The video is well done and lovely, but the song is beautiful and deeper than can be captured in another medium. Thank you Anna Tivel.
This song stopped me cold during the workday when I heard it the other day on WUMB Boston. Brilliant and this acoustic version is as good as the studio version if not better: ruclips.net/video/eHYEzM7nzLY/видео.html

Anna Tivel is an absolute poet. Hers is a voice the likes of which we sorely need and yet are almost unworthy.

Lyrics , music and person blended with the emotion of the human spirit ; visual simplicity at it's best.

Heard it this past April, 2023 on WUMB. Got the lyrics, will be playing for my congregation soon
Rather mystical
Rather mysterious
Rather luciferian.
What say you Anna Tivel?
To me, the person in the video is way too young for the image of the person Anna paints in The Question.
