Which exact rendering template are you using ?
The safest way to render is with the CPU only if you are having problems.
Set Encode Mode to CPU if your Render As "Video" template has this option.

According to the Twixtor website, Movie Studio is compatible.
regarding 200fps: you are giving some wrong information at 3:30. unfortunately the lowest number u can apply to the playback-rate is 0.250.
your statement, that 0.125 would be the perfect setting is only theoretically correct; but u simply cant apply this setting. the question remains unsolved on how to slow down 200fps-footage to its smooth max ! if you find out how to, i'd be very happy to learn!!

Only Vegas Pro allows for continual change in Velocity over time.
Thanks very much , your video helped me out greatly ! I'd like for you to do a video on rendering 4K video for RUclips . I just purchased a Sony ax-100 camcorder and I'm not sure about the render settings in Vegas Pro 12 for RUclips .In My latest video "Super Chevy Memphis 2014" , I used the XAVC S 4k 3840x2160 Long GOP 29.97p template & the file size was huge for a 3 minute video. The quality is good on RUclips but I can't help think there's a better template to use .
What speed conversion should i do if i want 30p to 24p?
30 fps → 24 fps = 0.80
To work out any speed conversion, divide the Project Frame rate into the Original videos frame rate.
24/30 = 0.80
I render the video to the same settings as the project and video and when i play the finished video it just has a black screen??
When you said at the end to do the double render for better quality videos, do you recommend this to be done with all videos being made or only videos where you slowed down a segment ?

Thanks for your help, but I'm confused when you set project settings to input video (ie 60,120,240) do you not also have to output the final result to the mentioned frame rates from chart? (24,25,30) or are you just rendering out at 60,120,240 and using that short clip in another project that is 24,25,30 fps? (or I'm totally wrong and you are just keeping it at higher frame rate w/ slower speed intermixed. also i thought i saw u comment on it but can't find it now, i cannot get playback rate lower than .250 no matter what even with 240ps footage. 0.125 seems unobtainable in vegas pro 13 at least for me??

You say if you want to slow 240p video down to 30 fps, you need a 0.125 playback rate. This is correct, obviously. However, I can slow down to 0.250 rate at minimum, which is very unfortunate if you have video at very high frame rates. Is there any way around this or will I need an external tool for time-stretching the clip, then import the slowed-down version into Sony Vegas?

Actually I did read the article, but this will do a lossy reencoding twice and I lose flexibility (since the clip is already rendered to a lower speed, I cannot e. g. set the factor to "1" in the "main project" to get "normal speed") so I might as well use external tools that are specialized for the job. If that doesn't turn out good, I might wanna choose to "fall back" to "reencode twice with Vegas".
Also it seems that, contrary to what you're saying, you don't render your entire *project*, but only the clip that you want to slow down, then drop the slowed-down version into your project and slow it down further. If you do it the other way round, the second slow-down will affect the entire project (since it was rendered into a single clip - of course you could cut it again, but this is an awkward workflow ;-) ) and not just the clip you want to slow down.
I don't get why Sony doesn't allow for more than a factor of four speedup/slowdown though. This looks a lot like "we use a very exotic algorithm for time-stretching that has this limitation".
I really like your tutorials though, and I think I'm gonna need a lot of that stuff (especially the split screen stuff, etc.) for my upcoming video project, so I'm very glad to have these tutorials available.

Hi Mate. Great video! Just want to clarify something. In your video, you say always say yes to "match your project video settings to your media." But what if I am using a 120fps clip and want to slow it down in a 30fps timeline? Surely, then I wouldn't want to say yes to match my settings as both the media clip (120fps) and project settings (30fps) are different, which is a good thing as it will enable me to slow down the video by 0.25 to achieve slow motion. Is this correct? if so, then in this case, I wouldn't match my imported media to my project settings? Hope this makes sense, and any clarification will be appreciated!
Yes in that situation you need to manually set your Project Properties to 30fps.
@@MovieStudioZen Thanks for the quick response! Also, i've got another question. I want to speed ramp a video shot in 120fps on a 30fps timeline. So basically, I want the beginning of that 120fps clip to start with real-time and then slow it down by 0.25. ( i don't want the whole clip to be slow-mo!). Will that mean that the portion of the 120fps clip which will be in real-time (ON A 30fps TIMELINE) be stuttery, as there will be frames missing? When slowing down a whole 120fps video to 0.25 on a 30fps timeline it comes out nice and smooth, but is there a way of making the 120fps real time part on a 30fps timeline to be just as smooth as the slow-motion part? or is that just something i have to deal with it in order to achieve a speed ramp within the same 120fps clip on a 30fps timeline? 1. Just try it and see what happens!!!
2. 120fps being played back at normal speed on a 30fps timeline will not stutter once you render the project. Yes, 3 out of 4 frames will be thrown out when you render 120fps into 30fps.
3. When I have made projects like this in the past, I made sure to plan out my shots beforehand. Which meant I switched my camera to 120fps ONLY when recording video for slow-mo, and then returned to 30fps recording mode for the other 95% of the video.
4. TIP: If your video looks too blurry after rendering the project, experiment with turning "Re-Sampling" off. Right-click video, go to Switches and set re-sampling to OFF.

I'm using you 1st method (properties>playback rate and stretch to the grey dot) and it works just fine for me but I have a problem with the audio, it is looping and I don't want that, I want to stretch it, can you help with that?
also I want to reduce from 240fps (iphone) to 30fps=0.125 but it only let me reduce to 0.25 = 60fps
If you are using Movie Studio Platinum, you will need to first render the video at 60fps and then re-import into another project and then slow it down 50%, to get it to 30fps.
If you are using Vegas Pro, there is an easier method.

QuicoPT 1. Create a new project with ONLY the video that you need to slow down. Slow it down and then save the project.
2. Open a 2nd project or your original master. Now use the Import Media function and import the .veg project file from step 1. Drag file onto timeline and now you can slow down further.

i have active take information active...but the percentage isn't appearing on the bottom...thought just came to me....i don't have audio which might be why...
i suppose i could add an audio track. i find velocity and right clicking for properties to be so slow comparatively
Yes you need to keep the Audio track attached, if you want to see the % readout.
Once you have adjusted the speed, you can then remove the audio.
The footage from my drone contains no audio track at all. In order to get the % readout, I tried inserting an empty audio track and grouping them, but this doesn't bring up the % readout. Do you have any idea how I can get a % readout in this case? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Hello Derek, Ive been your fan and subscriber for some time now and thanks for this video. Anyway I have a question about the project properties and render settings. Example I have 50p video(live in Europe) All my footage for videoclip is in 50FPS. I want to slow down to 25 some of the video but leave some of the footage to 50p(not slowed). I am rather confused what to setup in project properties in this case and another case is render setup. Can you please help?
One more different question about different resolution in one project. For example I have 4k video and 1080p video. What would the settings be in project properties and render? Thank you very much for any suggestions.

When using 50 fps and wanting to slow down to 25 fps, you need to set your Project Properties Frame Rate to 25fps and not 50fps.
Method #1 in my article here, is the best method to slow down video by x0.5

Then obviously, you will be rendering to 25 fps and everything slowed down will be nice and smooth.
When mixing 4K and 1080p, most people would set the Project to 1080p and then everything will look great in 1080p.
A lot of people then can zoom in on their 4K video and it still looks sharp in 1080p
If you set to 4K and render to 4K, the 1080p won't look as good on a BIG screen.
Oh I see, thank you very much. But still if I have 50fps vide and want to use only part of my videoclip slowed and the rest of the clip want to leave at 50fps (want to have mixture of video) should I still have project properties at 25p and render at 25 p? This is where I got confused.
And if I setup my 4K and 1080p video - project properties 1080p and render the same 1080p is that ok? Or will there be any issues with the rendered video? Thanks for any ideas.

If you render at 50 fps that has been slowed down to 25 fps, Vegas has to create 25 extra "fake" frames to get back to 50 fps. This can often look terrible.

Oh I see. So the conclusion is : If I have "mixed video" in one timeline- partially slowed to 25 and some left not slowed down - I still have to render at 25 to look ok. Is that right?
Quick question. You said if I had a gopro and shot at 120 fps then the best playback rate to get really smooth slow motion would be to slow it down to 0.25, which would make it 30fps and I would then render the video at 30fps. Wouldn't it be better quality to slow a 120fps video down to 0.500 which would then make it 60fps slowed down which would be better quality? Still learning all about this stuff, thanks a bunch.
If your main project is a 60fps project, then yes, slow it down by only 0.500
If it was a more conventional project like a documentary or movie, then it would be set to something like 30, 25 or 24 fps.
Thanks I have 120fps clips and also 60fps clips on my timeline. I figured I would render them both at 30fps. Slowed down the 120fps ones to 0.250 and the 60 to 0.500. The 120fps ended up looking horrible but the 60fps clips looked great. haha geeeez. In the future I need to just film everything at 120fps. I also found that when I slowed down the 120fps clips to 0.500 the audio didn't sync up. What would you do about different clips with different fps on one timeline? Like the 120fps and 60fps one I have. Just sucks that my 120fps clips look terrible and choppy slowed down to 0.250 with or without resampling.
@@dinnersat630 120 fps should not look choppy at all when slowed down to 30fps. 120 to 30 fps should look super smooth. If it is not playing smooth, you have something wrong with your settings or your computer is not powerful enough to play in real time while editing. Make sure your Project Properties are set to 30 fps !!!!
@@MovieStudioZen Hm ok yeah that's very strange then. I recently realized that I've been using Lightroom to edit the brightness, exposure, shadows etc of videos then export them and then edit them. However I realized that Lightroom can only export max 30fps videos so all my 120 and 60 fps videos were getting butchered. Do you know of any programs to adjust exposure, contrast, shadows etc then export the videos at the original fps and then edit them? I feel like Sony Vegas is limited when it comes to this? Or maybe I'm just not exploring all the features enough. Thanks for the help you're a wonderful person. Also wonder if the slowing down needs to be exact or else the quality will suffer noticeably, like if I slowed down a 120fps video just by stretching it manually so it was slowed down like .43 then rendered at 60fps if that would affect the quality enough to see. ALSO wonder if I shoot videos at 120fps then slow down SOME of them 50% but leave the rest at 120fps then render the entire video at 60fps...would that affect quality a lot? @@MovieStudioZen Wow you know what I just realized why my slow mo was choppy cause I slowed the playback down to 0.25 but then I also slowed the undersample rate down to 0.25 because I thought that would slow the audio too cause I'm a noob haha. Cause when I slowed the clip down the audio was out of sync. Do you know how to make it so the audio lines up perfectly after you slow the playback down aside from manually moving the audio around to fit it perfectly which is time consuming and annoying.

I could still use your advice, on a little matter, please:
1. How can I best edit 24fps (or 30fps) files along with 50fps (or 60fps), withing the same project?
And not to end up with a shaky video.
Should I put the Project properties as 24fps, if most of my files will be rendered at their normal speed,
then when I include a 50fps file and make it play half-speed, then should I use your methods above,
and that's it?
At the end, I should have a good looking 23,976fps movie clip with nice slow-motions, here and there?
By the way, the 50fps (or 60fps) is shot in 720p, where the 25 (or 30fps) in 1080p.

That was my plan also, to render at 24 (23,976, actually, for that film look, but also because I shot those clips at that frame rate), and also include some nice 50fps materials, slowed down (half), for some nice shots in a music video, for example.
But, as long as will activate the "Active Take Information", avoid slowing down with odd numbers (0.53 etc.) and stick to dividable numbers, everything should be fine in the end, right?
Of course, I could also slow down something in another plugin, then import it etc.
But, just wondering if in Moveistudio you could do something like that.
P.S. In other software I've tried, there is an option to activate "50/60fps" within a 24fps project,
then everything will be blended out nicely.
I dont get the small grey notch when i pull the clip. Any ideas?
Test with a very tiny video clip first and drag right edge to right - notch should appear very quickly.
If not, reset the program to defaults, in case you have changed a setting somewhere.

Which country do you live in ?
The reason I ask is because some countries use NTSC frame rates like 29.97 fps (30) or 59.94 fps (60) and others use PAL frame rates like 25 fps and 50 fps.
The Frame Rate settings you use, depend on what the final destination of the video will be.
If you are uploading to YT, you can use whatever you like. However for DVD production you need to be more careful.
Vegas Pro 15 now use the MAGIX AVC encoder, instead of Mainconcept AVC encoder.
You can customize any MAGIX AVC template to use the SAME settings I showed in the tutorial.

The video gets cut short when I change the playback rate .. my video is shot in 120 FPS 1080p but when I change ye playback rate to 0.25 the video gets trimmed
When you change the playback rate to a *slower speed*, the video on the timeline will need to be extended to show ALL of the video. Slowly drag the right edge of video to the right, until a *notch* appears in the top edge of video. The notch indicates the true end of the video.
If you did the opposite and sped up your video to something like 2.0, you would immediately see a notch appear at the halfway point of your video (the new end). In this situation you would to drag the right edge of the video to the left.
By default, Vegas will loop ALL videos back to their beginning, if you extend them beyond the end of video.
Thanks for your video but what if you want every to end up at 24fps specifically..shot some normal speed footage at 24fps and 120fps footage want to slow down to 24fps to keep that filmic frame rate. Thank you

Movie Studio Zen thanks..what do people do when they have a 24fps timeline but somehow speedramp down into slow motion then speed up to faster than normal motion but specifically in that same clip also play it back momentarily at normal speed.. in the parts of the clip playing back on a 24fps timeline where the its playing back at normal speed is it playing back at 60 FPS or 120 FPS (whatever the original frame rate was) or are they able to still play the normal speed part of the clip at 24fps somehow even though it was originally shot at a higher frame rate (& converted from the higher frame rate to 24fps during the normal speed portion of the clip)? To do what you are describing, you need to use the Velocity Envelope Tool, which is only available in Vegas Pro. This allows you to change the playback speed over time.
Movie Studio Zen yeah I have Vegas pro and am somewhat familiar with the velocity envelope tool but does that mean when playing the originally shot 120fps footage at ‘normal’ speed is it playing back still at 120fps or because the timeline is a 24fps timeline after rendering the normal, slow mo and sped up portions of the speed ramps all are still rendered equally at 24fps to retain the filmic/cinematic look? On a 24fps timeline that has mixed frame rate video, after rendering the project to 24fps, everything will be playing back at 24fps.

What do you mean by _"toggle to 960 frames"_ ?
If you imported a 960 fps video into Vegas/Movie Studio, you would need to slow it down, just like I showed in the tutorial. I guess when you say "toggle", you mean slow it down.

Un-link the Audio and Video tracks first.
Press on top of video track and press U for Un-Group.
The audio and video are now separate.
that does nothing. What i mean is the video is played back slower but the sound continues at realtime
Forget about what I first said.
Don't use Velocity Envelopes.
Make sure Active Take information is turned ON in View Menu.
Hold CTRL key down and drag edge of video to right.
Audio will slow down at same rate without Pitch Shifting.
It is impossible to change the play back rate without some level of sound distortion when slowing down video.
It is less obvious when you speed up video.
If you right-click the Audio track and look at Audio Event tab, you will see that elastique time stretch is applied to the audio.
If you set Pitch Shift to Lock to Stretch, then you will hear very bad distortion.
okay i need to better describe my problem. I ordered a Sony a7 iii which can shoot up to 120fps with sound and in order to get 5x slow motion i need to slow the footage down to 24fps but vegas only lets me slow down to 4x (30fps) using stretch and lock to stretch. i can get 5x with velocity but when i slow it down the sound continues at 1x and they get out of sync. Thats my whole problem :)
Question: I shoot at 120FPS, and when I render the video AT 24FPS, the slow-mo footage DOESN'T LOOK SMOOTH... Why? What's a good frame rate to render 120fps footage??

If you're shooting at 120 fps and want to render at 24 fps, you need to set the Play Back Rate to exactly 0.2
+Movie Studio Zen I did that (type 0.250 in Playback Rate). Still happens: rendered video TOO DAMN CHOPPY!!! I typed 0.500 and rendered, and looks a little bit better..., but NOT SMOOTH... :/ I think I might destroy my computer...
You MUST enter a playback rate of 0.20 - if you don't do this, the maths will not work !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This slows down your video exactly 5x times.
if I type 0.2, the video plays back EVEN CHOPPIER! :O why the damn 120fps clip does not plays back SMOOTHLY!!!!???????????
Do you have your Project Properties set to 24 fps ?

Set Playback Rate to 0.20
Render to 24 fps
Playback rendered video and it should be perfectly smooth.
If you rendered to a ridiculously high Bit Rate - that can cause choppy playback.

No. This is a Vegas Pro feature only.

Hero 7 black, 1080p/240fps. I use the ctrl button to stretch it out but it stops at 25%. So I'm having to save it like that and then open it in elements to slow it more.
I was having trouble opening the HEVC format and got magik movie studio platinum to open the videos. It wasn't working on elements.
Am I supposed to be saying no to the prompt at the beginning of opening a new project for slow motion footage?
I'm also looking for the "interpret footage " button in magik...
5:06 does not show up in SONY VEGAS PRO 14... WHYYYYYYYYYYYYY!!??
Right-click on the "actual video" on timeline and select Insert/Remove Envelope - Velocity.

yeah men, I do as you said, I right click and everything... but NOTHING APPEARS!!! but that's not my main problem. I wanna find out WHY ON EARTH MY 120FPS CLIP DOES NOT PLAYS BACK SMOOTHLY! o.O Does my software lacks something??
I have sony vegas pro 14 and I right click on the clip and go to Insert/Remove Envelope -> Velocity... not sure why yours doesnt. It should playback smoothly in the preview window if you do what OP says to do when importing the media. Make sure your project matches the fps of your media
