I visited San Remo on my way back from a 3 months stay in Cannes/Antibes and found the city not quite on par with them. It’s biggest deficits are the lack of a nearby airport, sandy beaches, islands, a peninsula like Cap d‘Antibes and a rugged coastline like that between Theoule Sur Mer and Le Dramont. Also, the bulk of the visiting tourists didn’t seem to be quite as affluent as those visiting Cannes/Antibes.
On the plus side, it’s cheaper and the local people are in general more likable than their counterparts in France, although that might have been just my personal impression.
