This is so helpful. I've never seen the pen tool used in this way. I'm excited to try this out on some HS Senior Banners I'm doing this week. I'd love to see how you do a cut out of long hair...especially long curly hair.

Once you make the vector mask around the entire thing you can pen tool inside both arms with 'exclude overlapping shapes' and it will automatically mask those too. no select & mask needed.

I like to use select subject and then let it make the selection, then turn that selection into a work path, then use the direct selection tool to adjust the points on the path to fit perfectly. Obviously if it does a good job I’d use less points, if it does a bad job more points in the work path to adjust accordingly.
You can do it without brush tool, just make new selection with layer mask, convert to smart object and do a pen tool again for arm insides... and select again new layer with layer mask & do smart object thing.. later you can edit every stage of photo.
Good catch! It got cropped out of the video. You're going to hit the "Add layer mask" button. It looks like the Japanese flag. I'll try to be better about how I crop the videos in the future. Let me know if you have any other questions!
I completely skipped this part as well. I'm following along and didn't notice I was working on the background until the 10 minute mark and like 30 minutes of working on the photo. How is that 1st layer done????
I feel there were a few key steps that were missed in this tutorial, definitely not meant for someone like me that has zero experience with Photoshop. Missed the initial step off adding Layer 1, the 10:00 mark you don't see what button you click, and then after following along you don't mention what to do after you've done the cutout. Pretty much a cliffhanger of a video if anyone is/was following along like me. Also, Photoshop has changed since then, a couple of things aren't easily there in 2022, maybe you can make an updated version.

Here to say why waste 18 minutes just take your quick selection tool and go inside the player and select anything you don't want just do ALT and start clicking to remove what you don't want. You'll thank me later instead of trying to form lines for an hour.

It's the 'Add Layer Mask' button. It looks like a rectangle with a circle in the middle in the layers window.
whn i press alt key it just opens up windows operator tab
