  • No start mower. Dump pick mower will it run? I have this Craftsman Platinum 190cc mower and it is a dump pick. It's been sitting for a year in my bone yard. The reason it's been sitting, when I first picked it up it looked like it was in decent shape all the parts were here but when I got it home & pulled on the cord it would not turn over.

The air vane for the choke shouldn't be hooked into the thermal device lever. The lever should rest just behind it, so the fan can blow the vane forwards when it starts. As it warms up the thermal device pushes the arm up to the vane to hold the choke off for a warm start.

If there's a gummed up, gunked up carb out there, you seem to find it. I don't blame you for buying a replacement. When they're that hard to get apart to clean and check, it's hard not to just get a new one. I paid about $165 for an OEM Briggs carb for my Craftsman tractor mower after a neighbor dropped and lost an internal part or two. We found one, but without a complete carb with everything where it's supposed to be, I didn't want to try a rebuild kit and I didn't trust the cheaper no-name carbs from just wanting to be done with it so much. In the future, I'll look at your HIPA brand, and if you make a buck from that link, it's fine with me. Turned out to be a good thing getting an OEM, though, because it's an upgrade to Nikki that was in there. They developed problems over time, so Craftsman changed to this one. It threw me at first, not looking the same, so I asked the local small engine shop about it and they told me it's the replacement in the parts manual.
Once you get the wheels repaired and anything else, and maybe repair the rust and spray paint the bad place, it'll run like new and look great again. When I'm in that deep, I do the little stuff, too... when I get around to it. 😝 My Troy-Bilt tractor mower is still in pieces in the shed after getting the Craftsman from my best friend. I'll get to it one day, but it's too hot now, or at least, that's my excuse. It might be too cold soon. 🤣 The Craftsman has kept me busy enough just keeping it running and then not burning belts. I'm hemorrhaging money on mowing my grass. That's a better excuse for now. 😉 Great job, Joe!

Thank you. Yep I seem to find them LOL. OEM is the better way to go but like you said can be pricey. Nikki carbs can be tricky with the gaskets but like anything else once you do one the rest get easy. Check Facebook, Craigslist or curbside for a free mower. There are plenty out there you can use for parts.
