Angelina has blessed us with many versions of "Bad Valentine" and each of us can have their favorite. For me, the jazzy version suits me best. Angelina's vocal control continues to improve, if that is possible. Always putting the story of the song first.
It seems like she's at the chrysalis point in her career. But a rainy day project is to listen to one or two songs starting at 6 and go year by year and watch a prodigy unfold with grace, fire, and delivery unlike anyone before. She has set the bar for excellence.
I love both of these versions, the power in the live is amazing, but the jazzy, melancholic version is sophisticated & is so Angelina. The 1st one is a banger, the 2nd one made my cry!
The jazzy version is unreal -- AJ scats and her signature frybrato has never been more pronounced.
What strikes me as something she is incredibly good at, on top of all other qualities, is that once she has "adjusted the voice" the way she wants it for that particular song, she is very consistent to this setting throughout the song . Then she can adjust the setting and perform the same song so that it appears with a completely different effect or angle. Then she is loyal to this "mood" or "setting" throughout the performance. Almost incomprehensible what level she has already reached! Many other good artists fail to achieve consistency at such a high level, especially in live performances.🤩

In short we have mad to sad in the sense that the song was written when she was 16..perhaps emotions still raw moving forward 2 years to the jazzy more mournful version looking back on the loss with sadness..it’s an interpretation that seems to be gathering momentum in terms of consensus..Thanks so much for taking the time to look at both versions. 🙏

Angelina literally shocked me, I love her voice and I am more and more in awe of her unstoppable musical evolution, I would never have expected that at her age she had already reached such a stratospheric level of vocal perfection. This is truly a beautiful song perfectly arranged for her voices (many!), both in the first blues version and in the subsequent jazz version, but what she creates in that melancholic and sad jazz version is indescribable and absolutely astonishing, even for the apparent ease with which she does it, in reality the instrumental accompaniment is little more than a simple pleasant decoration, her voice alone is enough to reproduce the emotional effect of a whole orchestra. She is a truly eclectic and extraordinary artist, I understand well why Toby is enraptured by her talent, being able to collaborate with a singer like her leaves a boundless space for musical imagination, you probably can't even imagine what vocal wonders she can create. Her creativity is simply enchanting and astonishing. 💛🧡❤
The jazzy version is epic
Tobi’s initial objective was to “reimagine” several of his most famous songs for his “Piano Diaries” album. When Tobi discovered Angelina it was like finding the holy grail. Tobi said that Angelina is the best female vocalist he’s ever heard. That was when he knew he had to work with her.
Something tells me that Tobi didn’t anticipate Angelina performing “Bad Valentine” in four different arrangements. The new pure jazz version is my favorite because it showcases Angelina’s other worldly talent and her genius level musical acumen.
This collaboration has resulted in a best case scenario for both Angelina and Tobi. Angelina needed Tobi’s name and reputation as much as Tobi needed Angelina’s once-in-a-millennia vocal talent.

Thanks so much Mrs. R for the double exquisite beauty of our Angel of music. Been following her for 8 years now and just when you think you have heard the best from her she just surprises you again and she is just 18. Her and Toby will do great things together and she is also working with Scott Hoying (Pentatonix) creating new music as well. There is no ceiling to stop this young lady from being one of the greatest vocalists in our life time. My time is running out on this planet but will savor every minute watching and listening to Angelina. Watched her grow from a baby and now a young woman who has never lost her humbleness, Class and eloquence, she is very unique in the music industry. Cheers, stay well.

It is amazing that Angelina and Toby could have created different renditions of the same song and lyrics, and the results are two almost completely different genres. It speaks to the creative collaboration between the two. One is in your face and the other is jazzy and introspective. The emotional content is evident in each, yet they yield different moods...completely. You are the first to compare the two in a reaction. My preferences are divided between the two. I like the jazzy version only because it is more in her wheelhouse.
I like the jazzy one, but I love the way she belted it out in the first one too! So hard to pick a favorite!

Yes, Angelina is the Bad Valentine - She has indicated that this is her breakup song - Toby and Angelina wrote this song when she was 16 years old - but not been released until now - interesting story as to why. Angelina and Toby wrote and recorded 8 songs together that were intended to be included on an Album but Republic Records decided to go with a shorter EP instead (Old Enough) - so Bad Valentine and the other 7 songs that Angelina and Toby wrote were not included. However, it looks like they are going to be released on Toby's label Kite Records starting with Bad Valentine.
She is spectacular, and I love this song. Another great musician that we have watched grow up.

To each their own, but I prefer the first (original) version out of the 3 or 4 that are now out there.
I loved how she belted it out in the first one... the second was a bit more "polished" but also more "laid back"
