Wrath of the Black Manta (NES) Playthrough

- A playthrough of Taito's 1990 action game for the NES, Wrath of the Black Manta.
An overhaul of the 1989 Famicom game Ninja Cop Saizou (忍者COPサイゾウ), Wrath of the Black Manta mixes elements of Ninja Gaiden and Shinobi to create a wholly memorable NES platformer.
If you'd like to see the original Ninja Cop Saizou game, you can find my translated playthrough of it at • Ninja Cop Saizou (NES)... .
You play as the "Black Manta," a ninja who is tasked by his master to save a young boy named Taro. A gang, led by "El Toro," has been kidnapping children around the world with the intention of forcing them to peddle drugs. This is a product of the late eighties after all. Remember America's "War on Drugs"?
(I have always wondered, though: what the hell is a "manta"? M-W defines it as "a square piece of cloth or blanket used in southwestern U.S. and Latin America usually as a cloak or shawl," and that doesn't really fit. The ninja doesn't seem to be a manta ray, either. Maybe he was originally meant to be a mascot for Mylanta and they just contracted the name?)
Like in Shinobi you toss shuriken at your enemies, and you can knife them if they get too close for comfort. Most of the time you wander about the streets, collecting information from the red thugs who can be "restrained" (by grabbing them by the throat) when you get close enough, and searching buildings for the kidnapped children (encased in blocks of ice, for whatever reason) who will give you hints about secret rooms when you free them. Eventually you'll fight the boss of the area, and when you beat him, Black Manta's master will give him access to new ninja arts.
These ninja arts are the gimmick that sets the gameplay apart from most other ninja-themed NES titles, and include attacks, like flinging fireballs and lightning strikes, as well as support abilities, like the ability to turn temporarily invincible or to tunnel underground like a gopher. These arts are unlimited in their use and can be activated at any time by holding the d-pad in a specific direction while charging the POW gauge.
These abilities are fun to play with, and since the gauge fills quickly and you can charge it while you're on the move, you can constantly spam the invincibility power once you've cleared the first stage. The game isn't particularly difficult to begin with (save for some awkward instances of unreliable hit detection), but these powers tend to make the game a total cakewalk. It's still fun, though.
I loved the campy ninja theme and the unbelievably ugly cutscene portraits, the dialogue's hilarious anti-drug rhetoric, and the general flow of the action. Wrath of the Black Manta is a bit rough around the edges, but I enjoyed it for its 80s brand of charm and cheese.

This game is tragically underrated. It was so deep for a NES game of that time. The ninja arts were so varied and well executed. Combat was fun. Story of rescuing kids and the anti drug message was good. The villains and the "cut scenes" were well done. I remember being legit scared of Toro when I was a kid. Secret rooms were robust and cool. Boss fights had great music and cool mechanics. The fight against "Tiny" is so iconic.
For tha eraI. Wrath of Black Manta was a stand out game.
Wrath of the Black Manta feels like Shinobi on drugs, which I suppose is pretty suitable given the theme. What an utterly bizarre game this is!
It says Wrath of the Black Bass in the youtube link :D I love this game, it's one of my favorite NES games
@@PlasticCogLiquid Oops! I thought it was funny, but I meant to change it before it published 🤣 It seems that I didn't.
@@NintendoComplete LOL, I had to do a double take, thought I was trippin
I love this wierd game, played it as a kid and I still like. I actually revisited it about a year ago... I am suprised by myself how much I still actually remember.
This was one of the ten or so NES cartridges that I actually owned as a kid. I could get to the last boss reliably, but I don't think I ever beat it.
The song for stage 1 has lived in my head rent free for decades now. 😅
"All right! I'll talk."
"Tell me everything you know."
"I don't know anything. I swear!"
Good dialog writing, Taito.
Well he DID talk...
Sounds like any episode of law and order
10 out of 10.10 out of 10. 100/100 best game best game.
I like to imagine it's just like the same suspect you're grabbing over and over until he finally starts giving up the information. XD
I know, Taito is probably like, "Well these dialogs are retarded but at least they'll entertain a 5-year-old". Laziness gets rewarded quite a bit these days...
This is one of those surprisingly forgotten games that is actually damn solid for the time. And very difficult.
I remember playing this game quite a few times with my cousins back in the late 80s/early 90s. Love old school 8-bit, the golden era of gaming!😁👍
Yet another example of late 80s early 90s ninja Mania. If you didn't live it you wouldn't understand LOL. Every other thing in media was a freaking ninja and it was awesome
Go ninja, go ninja, go ninja, go ninja, *GO GO*
Including that 3 Ninja kid movie lol
@@80sForever29 And Surf Ninjas!
Yup we were so hyped up from the commercial. But it sucks so bad once we all played!!😂😂
I even named my cat Ninja had all the ninja turtles went out on Halloween as a ninja great childhood memories!
I'm on a spree of watching games I rented as a kid, got close to the end, but never finished. I got to the end boss but wasn't able to beat it before I had to return the rental. I was like 8 years old, and 34 years later I still remembered that part. Thanks for the closure haha!
This was my game
“Master, what’s up”
😂😂😂
I randomly remembered this game today and thought "I need to find a playthrough on RUclips to remember what its all about". Then I come here and low and behold there's this video posted from just 7 days ago. Perfect.
Played it as a kid and didnt remember much. Googling NES ninja games didnt help. My two clues: a boss named Tiny and another holding a kid
i've been looking for this game for a long time. Finally found it after so long
That "ding" when you melee attack is really satisfying for some reason ..
It is! When I was a kid I tried this on my cousin, but there was no *bling” sound… just lots of blood 😕
Never heard of this game before. I'm surprised I missed this back in the day as a kid! I would have been all over it!
That second stage (11:30), with dueling flaming finger guns while flying thru the air on bedsheets... If that isn't peak NES gaming, I don't know what is.
So, Taro left a message telling everyone where he would be brought.....BEFORE HE WAS EVEN BROUGHT THERE? Kid's not just smart, he's prescient!
Who knows? Maybe Taro is actually the Kwisatz Hadderach.
The Black Manta sprays ninja death to prevent reefer madness.
The blond boy/girl that you save has always reminded me of a "My Buddy" doll
my buddy and meeeee!
@@_Majoras I loved mine!
I like when he asks him if he does drugs. Would have been funny if the kid said no but i love smell of cocain!!!
This game was a bop when I was eight yrs old, renting it in 1990. Full price Nintendo games back then were ludicrous.
damn and the music is even better than I remember it 😎👉👉
Yep I grew up knowing never to ask my parents to buy me any Nintendo games due to price so we just rented them. Christmas 1989 they purchased super dodge ball. Besides Mario and duck hunt that was the only other game I remember owning lol
@@justman4891 At least it was a good one, right, and not something like Captain Planet or Super Pitfall?
@@NintendoComplete lol you are so right! Rented both of those trash games back in the day too! Lol
@@justman4891 Hahaha oh man, it's so easy to look back on the good games and totally forget some of the total trash that was out there.
Classic!!!
8:35 that's my desktop wallpaper!
This brought back memories of when we used to play the "old Nintendo" as we called it back in the day in my household. Appreciate the playthrough, could never make it past the second stage. lol
Taro's greatest skill is clearly negotiation as he got the kidnappers to tell him where he was being taken and let him write a note during said kidnapping.
Gotta love that 80s lazy writing magic. That said still looks fun.
I LOVED this game when I was a kid. I don't remember how I even got it...
"Who could be calling in the middle of the night?" Says the man dressed as a ninja in his room.
I remembered this as being the $19.99 game at Walmart that my mom would not let me have because it looked too violent lol!
Taito's response to Sega's Shinobi along with Capcom's Code Name:Viper , that also was in response to Namco's Rolling Thunder.
Wow!!!! so much memories I played this so much times I was so mad when I first started it I couldn't get past tiny the first Boss 😂😂😂
Wow, I had completely forgotten about this one until I saw this video. I definitely had fun renting this a couple times as a kid
Damn man. The universe is something else! I had this game on my mind and just couldn't remember it. I was going to ask you about it. Then, bam. This vid gets recommended!
Funny how things work sometimes, huh? That's a helluva coincidence 😀
@@NintendoComplete yes. I was ready to ask, "Hey, do you remember an old school nes ninja game where one of the bosses is a big baby and the roof falling?" When I saw the thumbnail preview, I was like that's it! I now realize that wasn't a big baby. 😆
@@clayne10 Lmao this kinda feels like the Minority Report of random RUclips longplays. I love it!
i been trying to look for this game for a long time
I completely forgot I played this game as a kid. Wow, taking it way back. AVGN brought me here.
Wtf i watch him and searched this game couldnt find it
Do you plan on doing the Japanese counterpart Ninja Cop Saizou too? It has a different story and music and level designs and I believe different ninja arts as well.
I had been considering it :)
@@NintendoComplete Please play a translated version.
@@JuraIbis Is there one? If not, it might take me a bit to get to it. It's going to take a bit of time if I have to translate it myself.
ruclips.net/video/31d4XmTeze8/видео.html Here you go!
i actually like this game for some reason lol it's like a poor man's ninja gaiden
HOW THE FULK DID HE LEAVE A NOTE SAYING WHERE HE WILL BE HELD AT. HE WAS A MOTHERFULKING GENIUS.
nice description, as always 👍
Back in high school, i skipped my award ceremony to beat this game
Just check christy teigen’s place for the kids
This game always stuck with me - less for its quality and more because it's as close as we're ever getting to a playable Godfrey Ho movie.
You can picture almost imagine all of Manta's dialogue in Richard Harrison's voice. It's great.
i really like this game, played it so much
Thanks a ton for posting this. I loved this game, spent way too long playing it. Def a tough one. I don't remember the music being so repetitive! So many rip offs here, karate kid, TMNT, mega man. Good stuff- back when developers weren't just throwing eye candy out there
Best in game dialogue ever
What every kid said when they first played this- THIS AINT NINJA GAIDEN!
i loved this game
One other strategy is to cheese some of the rooms you find in the game to kill the three thugs that come into the room, thus boosting your health.... 'cause busting (crime) makes you feel good, I guess??
Totally bizarre and Underrated game! Plays similar to shinobi but still decent and fun!
God I remember this game. It creeped me out for some reason. Looking back i should've gave it a chance
Extraordonary video.
Judging from the thumbnail, it seems this game might be...o-tay.
One choke hold and the red man gives up the info lmao
I played this game a lot but couldn’t figure out the pattern to defeat the final boss but I still liked it seems like this game should be remasterd as well as some other games Nintendo had some good games back when the first NES came out good memories are you going to do the skate or die series I really liked those thanks keep making vids it means a lot to an old game master like me.
Yeah, I could get up to the last boss fairly easily (as NintendoComplete says, this game isn't terribly hard) but I could never figure out how to kill the last boss. I eventually heard somewhere that you had to use four specific arts in a precise order to kill him, but by then I'd already moved on to other games and didn't have the motivation to come back and finish it.
I remember playing this game with my cousin when I was like 4. Good times.
gas, grass, or wrath - nobody rides for free
I had this game but don't remember playing it. Crazy.
I believe it was also featured in AVGN's special episode featuring Captain S. Never knew about the game until this playthrough.
Black Manta is a living embodiment of "speak softly and carry a big stick". Dude has a infinite supply of shuriken, can turn invisible and summon meteor showers at will, but when interrogating thugs the worst he thinks to threaten them is the police commissioner. He's a big softie, really, but one who can fuck your shit up.
It's an interesting game, certainly. It's not flawless by any measure, but significantly better than the unlicensed Shinobi for the NES. Kinda wish there was a remake/spiritual successor that could flesh out the interrogations and secrets more and have a bit more Ninjutsu.
I like how the manta wears his mask home alone in the middle of the night.
Oh man, I haven't thought of this game in 30 years. Spent hours playing it with my older brother. The music, SFX etc sigh. I need to buy it again except I only have a famicom now :(
"Alright I will talk!" "Tell me what you know!!?" "I don't know anything, bye."
Music on point.
Thumbnails was like : im about to do somethin' nasty and disgusting
This is so much like Shinobi, I wish I was aware of it back in the day.
O NES tem uma biblioteca bem louca..... Esse jogo junto com o Jason... joguei mto
I remember the massive marketing campaign for this game… and the “meh” feeling when I finally played it. It was on the TMNT/ Bad Dudes level of games. Great trip down memory lane though. Thank You
Yeah this was an issue of VGCE mag I had. I thought it looked like crap.
Played it probably a decade later around 2001, bought it used real cheap.
Didn't like it at all. Owned it back then out of personal laughs. It was a really bad game with some interesting ideas that just fell flat.
One of my first video games
I was so happy as a kid when I beat this game. ~_~
_Fuuug-leeey_ graphics! Although there are certainly a couple of interesting ideas here. I actually rather enjoy quite a few of Taito's 8-bit games, and their licensed ones like the Jetsons and Flintstones games...those are absolute classics.
It's ugly, but it does do a few impressive things. That first boss is huge for an NES game, and that faked transparency effect when he turns invincible is pretty clever and looks really good. I agree with you that's it's not near the level of their H-B games, though.
I remember, my friend had this game. We couldn't get past the first boss.
literally same
Same. Tiny is a big jerk.
I remember renting this game back in the day but I don't think I got much past Tiny...lol.
One of the better games for nes I remember
Wait a second...jumping around to rescue children, a jukebox at the end (for no reason), and a villain who looks like Mr. Big? Were these intentional nods to Moonwalker?
I used to own this back in 91-92 but a "friend" from high school conned me out of it....can see how " the Messenger" got some play dynamics from this....
I don't understand all the hate. As a kid I really loved this NES game. The music, the animations, the artwork and the whole 80's ninja atmosphere was so awesome. Looking back I do see rather ridiculous conversations though :-)
Do you use drugs? No, I don't use drugs. Don't use drugs!
So, after all these years, you watch the ending and see that the Black Manta was mid 90s WCW wrestler Disco Inferno this entire time?
Scrolled down all the PL just searching for this games because i recalled i was never able to beat the final boss back in the time when i was a kido 🤔
I remember the comic book ad
My mom used to hate when i played this game .....cause of the kidnapping smh🤦🏿♂️
Never herd of this game 🤔
43:55 Giant bald fat guys were quite the problem in the 1980s. Luckily the ninjas got rid of them all.
Wrath of the Black Manta was one of the hardest ninja games i played along with Ninja Gaiden 1-3 when I played Nintendo games in the early 90's. I had to cheat to finish Black Manta.
I remember my cousin let me borrow this game it was so hard never got close to finishing it at all never made it to the 2nd level I had forgotten all about this game until today to be honest my cousin didn't let me use the game for long so I didn't play it much 😅 but this game waa kinds ahead id its time 💯
"Are you all right?" Loool
This, folks, is the REAL Frank Dux story.
That thumbnail 🤣😂
That man looks like that love expert Tim Meadows played on SNL
I remember this
Man, New York had a real Ninja problem in the 80's between this and the turtles lol
Like Ninja Gaiden and Shinobi combined.
I remember the commercial then playing the game and felt let down so I traded it probably for Ring King or something
Unofficial sequel to the Karate Kid. Tell me that's not Mr Miyagi
In Russia pirates called this game (japanese version) "Ninja gaiden 4".
Yes, I had this game on a cartridge and it was called "Ninja Ruykenden 4".
They should remaster Gilligan's Island from Nintendo that would be epic XD
Are you playing these games on an actual NES?
I LOVED this game back in 3rd-5th grade. However I have since learned that my cartridge had a data error that made the last boss completely unbeatable. I traded my NES and a few other consoles back in 1999. I know someone else got that borked up cartridge. For that I apologize! We both got screwed over in the end!
I thought this was going to be an Aquaman game.
I don’t care what anyone says, this game was awesome. I’m not a stupid drone who lets word of mouth dictate my tastes. This game is even better than any ninja Gaiden game and I love ninja Gaiden. This game deserves better from the NES fanbase
Captain S And Angry Video Game Nerd Are Team Up To Save Christmas
Did.... Did you name this Wrath of the Black Bass?
Yeah, I forgot to change it to Manta before I hit publish lol
The “Just Say No” message At 8:40 😅
"Alright I'll talk.....I don't know anything".
Highly underrated a bit better than ninja gaiden, hard as heck
