Halo Season 2 reviews near as the series draws close, and an old comment from Pablo showcased a very common attitude in Hollywood. Hidden behind a wall of language about how Important it is X is put into the series, it always hides self interest and their own personal taste. You can find Rene Auberjonois (Odo from DS9) giving a class on acting in a mask. Dude taught at Juilliard, by the way. But he said that a mask actually makes you much more expressive because the audience is used to seeing you not emote. So even a tiny little head movement or a tone of voice carries so much morer weight.
That’s actually a core theme of many of Tolkien’s villains. Melkor/Morgoth, Feanor, and Sauron all started as highly creative beings, but as evil consumed them, they lost most of their creative ability, which also seems to be the case with much of modern day Hollywood. There are many formerly creative “old timers” who now are so consumed by conforming to DEI and virtue signaling that they no longer can create anything decent (and of course there are the newbies who never were any good to begin with).
I like the part where Pablo said he needed to take the helmet off so he can make us feel for his character, but all we felt was contempt for him taking off the helmet. Sorry Pablo, we don't empathise or sympathise with your Soyjack face.

I feel the same about the book of Boba Fett. Why is he taking off his helmet? And he's smiling? That's not what Star Wars fans wanted to see. In the movies, Boba was a bad @ss. But on TV he's a fat, smiling old man. No thanks
Lol totally, he'll he takes his helmet off so little that when John 117 finally does remove his helmet he's pale ..virtually opaque. These clowns know zero about the source material
We're not supposed to know what Chief is *feeling*, he's a nearly emotionless killing machine, not a war criminal who rapes prisoners. Echo should show emotion though but for some reason she doesn't because women think that makes them tough.
Yh llus there is also body language and voice acting. Sure not showing face makes it all a bit harder but that just means that you have to invest more in body language.
The whole point of characters having the helmet on and lack voice lines is so the player can project into that canvas. MC is the main protagonist, everything revolves around him in a deep way. But what MC believes is that he is an additional soldier just doing his job, as they are bigger things at stake. This is what Hollywood can't understand. By removing the helmet you are undercutting all the war machinery he is in, and the idea that anyone can be behind that helmet. It's weird that they removed it, even in the fanloved animation Red Vs Blue spartans mostly use helmets and in the fanloved games Halo 1, Halo 2, Halo 3, we never see MC face
They are unable to understand a hero who stoically does his job and trusts his superiors. To them, a military hero is someone who refuses orders and fights his superiors rather than the enemy.
Not one Narcissist can understand the motives or intentions of the Unsung Hero (which is also known as "The Stranger" or "The Faceless One." It is an old concept; A village is threatened with the end of its existence and they must appeal to the outsider to balance the world and restore order. If the outsider has no face, it is because those of the village project their own fears and desires upon The Stranger. See "High Plains Drifter" or "Yojimbo," or countless other examples, some tragedies and some comedies.
The show runner for the Witcher cant stop talking about Yennifer a character that has like 5 viewpoint chapters in the entire witcher saga. She has less chapters then there are books. An important character yes, but its not her story it Geralt and Ciri's story.
Probably the best comic adaptation Karl urban was willing to keep his face covered too, proving his ego isn't everything Personally, with modern films they should encourage the actors to try voice work more, that way they're face isn't the thing getting them work Robert Englund is instantly recognisable with just voice work whether it's the voice of dormammu in super hero squad or scarecrow in injustice, Jason voorhees and Michael Myers are iconic because of their masks
If someone wants to show their face, maybe they shouldn't apply for a role where the character is famous for never showing it? Just a crazy idea I had :P
2:28 During Sgt. Johnson's death scene in Halo 3, the frame of Chief's left hand holding onto Cortana's chip had more meaning and emotion than the "Johnny Rings" face shots which all give the impression that the armor's auto-jacker switch broke off during production and they just left it on.
Master chief in halo 2 mission 1 walking away saying "I wont" when being asked what would happen if he misses that bomb had more emotion in it than the entirety of the new series. Master chief always had a way to deliver powerful statements with very minimal words. The dude in that garbage ass show is just straight up not master chief.
I completely agree. This generation of "actors" would all benefit from wearing masks all the time. At least they would have more facial expressions that way
They're in such a death knell state. They know their time of being the center of attention is coming to an end (it's already done -- people are more interested in the lives of comedians and youtubers than they are in actors) and these narcissists are mentally spiraling because of it
If they wanted a Halo show with a spartan, then just make your own. Stop ruining Master Chief, 343 is already trying to do that. Really wish they would just step away from him.
Cluster B is described as "unpredictable, dramatic, or intensely emotional responses to things". The four disorders in the group are Narcissistic, Histrionic, Antisocial and Borderline. I like how Hollywood pretends that barbie was successful because it was such a great story instead of realizing it was only successful because of the name. Call that film anything else and it would flop.
You know that Amy Schumer was originally cast as Barbie. If she had been cast and they kept the same story, the movie would have flopped regardless of the brand name
They also made damn sure it looks like the Barbie franchise, hired an actress that really looks like a Barbie doll and even then had to throw in lots of male abs to sell it.
Peter Weller single handedly proves Pablo wrong about Master Chief. Weller can out act all modern actors on even with a helmet covering most of his face as Robocop.
Remember that awesome scene in house of the dragon where paddy considine put in a beautiful performance simply walking to a throne WHILE WEARING A MASK?

I swing between hope and dread for the 40k project on a near daily basis. Sometimes I think it could be as big as Star Wars or the MCU were at their height, now that those properties have left holes in the culture. Other times I'm ready to place bets on when Cavill gets fake metoo'd out of his position and replaced by someone like Phoebe Waller-Bridge.
I hate seeing the direction Jodi Foster is taking. I was always such a huge fan since I first saw her in Taxi Driver when I was in high school in the eighties. I just do not understand why people, celebrity or not, think anyone else would care about what they think to the point of force feeding it to others.
When you're told you're important everyday, eventually you believe it. It's our responsibility to show them they're just entertainment, easily replaced by something as simple as a stick and a bit of mud.
The Halo situation is stupid. - They already established a way to see the face IN THE HELMET if you are that desperate. Marvel did it with Iron Man when RDA was in the suit. - Films and TV series have been able to have actors emote while wearing full prosthetics, makeup and straight up face masks for decades. Mandalorian is actually a good example of this ironically but then even THAT decided to take the helmet off. - The added hilarity is how badly Halo S1 abused the helmet situation. MC takes off his helmet in situations where he should keep the damn thing on but puts it on when it is not needed. - Watching the Pink Hair Spartan get straight up face planted with no helmet by the OTHER Spartans actually wearing their helmets was pure comedic irony which I think is too complex for the hacks writing this garbage to grasp.
you can actualy argue that an actor is more free with a mask on because then you dont need to worry about facial exprecians only voice expression and bodylanguedge. its funny that the guy that wants the mask of is better with the mask on :P
Everyone in these shows look like they hate what they’re doing and/or they hate the audience they're doing this for. I really liked Tom Hardy’s Bane, that was a well done portrayal by Hardy and we never see more than his eyes, but we get enough through them.
No, it's overrated considering it gets a past for having the same fundamental flaw as the '90s movie: it leaned too far in one direction. Remember that one time that Judge Dredd made a comically over-the-top drug bust?
You know, the bit about using ASL to talk behind camera while rolling is actually kind of a smart move. Means they could talk without risk of it being picked up on mic. That's probably the only good use of ASL they had.

Funny, the numerous cutscenes in the Halo games did a beautiful job at conveying Master Chief's emotions and character while never needing to remove his helmet. So what's the modern series' excuse?
What that writer doesn’t understand is that there are iconic helmets that have more meaning than some random actor’s facial expressions. Boba Fett was instantly famous back in the day. Master Chief and Judge Dread characters are the mask/helmet. Taking it off dilutes the meaning. The Mandalorian embodied that perfectly. Seeing a face would make it a completely different thing that would’ve never been as popular.
The one line Darth Vader says to Boba Fett, "No disintegrations" tells us more about both Vader and Fett then the entire Book of Boba Fett and Kenobi shows.
@@edgarbm6407 you’re so right about that. You also brought up another iconic Helmeted character. Can’t believe I forgot about Vader. The mystique of Boba Fett lessened with him rarely wearing his helmet. That scene you mention is one of the coolest by far.

It's bad enough they're screwing up echo, but that's their character to screw up. It pisses me off beyond words that they're screwing up the live-action version of Master Chief though.
What puzzles me the most about echo and how they changed her power for the "better" is that if she actually could read people movements perfectly she could also READ LIPS AND NOT NEED THE USE OF SIGN LANGUAGE IF SHE IS LOOKING RIGHT AT SOMEONE!?@ like what
Yes, that's how it was in the comics, she could communicate pretty normally because she could read lips as well as mimic speech. Plus, she also learned to play instruments by watching others- which was the reason Kingpin realized she was something special, not just a deaf girl that needed special treatment. So I've been confused on exactly how all that is "lame", lol, and I've wondered exactly how much of the comics the director read to form that opinion.
The weirdest part of the helmets thing is that anyone who has done Masque training will tell you; they’re talking bollocks. It’s actually hard not to over act when your face is covered and the smallest gesture gets over interpreted by the watcher. And surely the copy reflexes ability suits Eho, who’s obliged to stare at your hands anyway, on account of being deaf…?
The halo actor fucked up so bad because he would’ve been respected and loved so much more if he kept his mask on. People don’t want a face to master chief. If this show was actually good, and this actor kept the mask on he would be legendary right now. But because we got to see his face and ass he’s toast.
Ego is essential in creative entertainment - it's how you sell the product, when people ask what's in it for them, you gotta gush. Belief that your product is hot shit that people will want. The only rule is you must gush about the work itself, the product people will be experiencing with their eyes and/or ears. If you're gushing about yourself, no matter your position in the production - or what inspired the work (ideology, personal history, taste)... you've completely forgotten what it is your selling, and the product becomes just a vanity project, a vessel for your backstory that means nothing to anyone other than you. Consumed by ego.
I knew halo was bad, but that part near 21:44... He knew about the spartan program as they got told that they were part of a program to create super soldier able to withstand a suit that would rip human in half and fight against the unbelievably strong covenant. Sure, they weren't told they had been kidnapped but they knew most of it. The scientist who made them couldn't stop cackling about her black ops program as she made them. So why did he have to a spartan program search in the show?
My daughter's name is Halo (she was released before the game). Some of our best memories together are playing Halo together when she was 9 to 11 years old. And I saved for months to buy an Xbox simply because of the Halo game. All that being said, I was already so jaded by Hollywood by the time that the series came out, I refused to get a Paramount account to watch it. The more I heard and saw about the series, the more I knew that was the right decision. It is sad, because the game means so much to me, and holds such a huge place in my heart and past, yet it is the only way I could keep those memories good.
@@SoRePeSi I have been using that for years to clarify to people that she was not named after the game. In fact I had not heard of Halo (which was a Mac only project at the time) until 3 months after my daughter was born. :)
I love how easy some things are to fix. In Halo, fans would've accepted having Master Chief having his helmet on with us having to see the internal helmet shots to show Pablo's face. But he wouldn't have that. In Echo, they needed to commit to either having this all deaf, or not. Or have her actually kick ass without the leg (which there are many scenes they could've done)......or not. I love that she needs the prosthetic to do anything. All AFTER removing some of her comic abilities! What a shame.
Imo it wouldn’t have been difficult to show her mastering situations despite the missing leg. It’s imo the fact that the fight scenes try to act as if she was a huge dude with two normal legs that ruin the action. Being deaf and missing a leg, they would have had to show her to be cunning and able to adapt fast, not to be a full frontal assault fight as if she was Captain America. But I guess „the message“ was more important than to show actual strong women.
Love how everyone Quote Tweeted that shit take from Pablo with the End of the intro for Doom 2016, where without even saying a word you feel and see every bit of anger and rage the Slayer has for what happened because of what Samuel Hayden did, for all the lives lost
the ironic on this is "Y'ALL IN THIS FOR MONEY" the more specific the target audience the less money they get because frankly, no one cares if the stories is good or not. alienating a good chunk of audience is a sure way to lose a fuckton of profits
Even worse, they changed the tribal origin of Echo from Blackfeet to Choctaw because they felt that the Blackfeet tribe's aesthetics were BORING and DERIVATIVE. Imagine that, being so up your own tuchus that you think "representation" is important...but only when YOU think it looks cool enough.
They thought particularly expensive bouts of self-gratification would pass as entertainment. She-hulk in particular was getting off on how clever they thought they were being. Sure other shows are meta, but they struggle not to come across as smug and self-congratulatory.
One day I hope to hear Disparu joyously singing the praises of some random show/movie. I think he's right about all this crap and enjoy his takes but I also believe it would be interesting to hear him give a positive review.
You know since movies and TV are an audio/visual media, if a character is wearing a mask you can interpret their emotions through their tone of voice, the context of the situation, the framing of the filming and the musical cues (extremely important when setting the tone). I swear Hollywood acts like they're work is first to do anything so it's impossible not to do things their way....when there's hundreds and thousands of examples to work from.
Also! Just for funzzies! 7:31 "Does it matter", at 2nd point, back up looks back with a look of wtf!? As if to say! "Girl how far are you gonna remove yourself from the culture! And still claim it!???"🤣
Yeah, that’s peak narcissism. She isn’t tied to it in any way but claims the culture as her own and pretends to champion them because she looks like them and shares a heritage she is loosely connected to.
I hope we leave this “woke” Hollywood era soon. There’s nothing wrong with inclusivity but sacrificing a good story to push your views is dumb. If marvel wants to improve their projects they don’t need to take more time on them they need to hire directors and writers that actually care about making a good story. Not a mediocre or bad story with a political message
So if we have to see a face to understand a character... why can we all understand and connect with say the muppets? Most of them don't have complex facial expressions yet I can understand Kermit just sitting on a shelf far more then any current day actor. What about anime, cartoon or CG characters? A lot of them don't even have faces to emote with. Yet you'll understand most of their emotions mostly from expressive voice acting. So Mr John Halo sit down, put the helmet on and use that little something called body and voice acting.
19:29 Have you read the conclusions section of a research article written in the last since we started publishing articles? Hint: They never say that all about a subject is known and we need less research on the subject.
What a lot of these newer film makers don't understand is that unlimited creative freedom is not a great thing. Creativity comes from limitation. If you have a limited budget and a simple idea you need to get more creative to make it work or even get it made.
Rarely do people show up to see an actor, great actors drive people to theater because of the characters that they are able to portray. Dredd is a great example of understanding The Story and characters, part of the reason why is it great is because Urban understood the character and put that over his ego. Compare that to the awful Stallone movie where so long and sister that people see his face. That's why Dredd is great, keeping up the character first
We never saw the faces of the Rookie, Noble Six, or Emile, yet we understood plenty what they were feeling (hell, Rookie didn't even say _anything_ and still gave a great performance).
*an* historic series. You'd expect professional writers to know basic grammar at least. Also, any professional actor should be able to voice act sufficiently to perform without their face visible. Also also, lol at saying toxic fans won't tolerate a deaf / disabled superhero fighting because they're bigoted, when their largest complaint is in the context of them fighting a famously blind and recently successful superhero who everyone loved. It's about quality not identity. I suspect I'll edit this again soon...

Simple answer... dont watch Halo like people are not watching Star Wars or Star Trek or Dr who. Or any of these other desecrations or TV shows that are straight out vandalizations of things we love.
Dont know, Guillermo del toro seemed to do fine with dr. Krauss, a faceless yet not emotionless character in the slightest. That cut to master chief's expressionless face after Disparu reading that article piece about how a face provides expression, is utter brilliant.
I was perfectly fine with master chief taking his helmet off. He’s a human and ya know probably wants to eat and shower and maybe not wear his power suit 24/7. Karl *WAS* Judge Dredd. He was 100% committed and absolutely nailed it.
A Savior doesn't need lifted up. A Savior does the lifting.
A true savior doesn't look for validation or adulation, either. Chasing an ego boost doesn't exactly lend itself to virtue or altruism.
These "creatives" don't know anything about selflessness or humility.

You mean Victimized and College Student (non STEM)
You can find Rene Auberjonois (Odo from DS9) giving a class on acting in a mask. Dude taught at Juilliard, by the way. But he said that a mask actually makes you much more expressive because the audience is used to seeing you not emote. So even a tiny little head movement or a tone of voice carries so much morer weight.
Evil doesn't create , it only seeks to destroy .

Sure not showing face makes it all a bit harder but that just means that you have to invest more in body language.
Maybe thats the problem. Its too 'hard' to actually act.@javelinmaster2

Karl urban was willing to keep his face covered too, proving his ego isn't everything
Personally, with modern films they should encourage the actors to try voice work more, that way they're face isn't the thing getting them work
Robert Englund is instantly recognisable with just voice work whether it's the voice of dormammu in super hero squad or scarecrow in injustice, Jason voorhees and Michael Myers are iconic because of their masks

Remember Karl Urban insisting how important it was that his face was seen to be able to effectively tell the story in Dredd? Me neither.
Or James Earl Jones showing his face in Star Wars?
2:28 During Sgt. Johnson's death scene in Halo 3, the frame of Chief's left hand holding onto Cortana's chip had more meaning and emotion than the "Johnny Rings" face shots which all give the impression that the armor's auto-jacker switch broke off during production and they just left it on.
Red vs Blue had their character emote better than that.

The most heartbreaking thing is when Mark Hamill was with Ruin Johnson and quoted him saying "we don't care about the fans" and the audience cheered.

Literally divas with none of the street cred needed to even justify the big head/complex forming to begin with.
