  • The Colt Single Action Army, also known as the Single Action Army, SAA, Model P, Peacemaker, M1873, and Colt .45 is a single-action revolver with a revolving cylinder holding six metallic cartridges. It was designed for the U.S. government service revolver trials of 1872 by Colt's Patent Firearms Manufacturing Company - today's Colt's Manufacturing Company - and was adopted as the standard military service revolver until 1892.
The Colt SAA has been offered in over 30 different calibers and various barrel lengths. Its overall appearance has remained consistent since 1873. Colt has discontinued its production twice, but brought it back due to popular demand. The revolver was popular with ranchers, lawmen, and outlaws alike, but as of the early 21st century, models are mostly bought by collectors and re-enactors. Its design has influenced the production of numerous other models from other companies.
The Colt SAA "Peacemaker" revolver is a famous piece of Americana known as "The Gun That Won the West". The original length of the barrel, issued to the U.S. Cavalry, was 7-1/2 inches (with an overall length of 13 inches).

An SAA revolver went full-auto once, because the backward force was -just- enough to push the hammer back all the way every time, firing all 6 rounds.

This seems very unlikely... but interesting. Your main spring would have to be fairly weak to succumb to the recoil (which would be mostly concentrated on the muzzle), and it could be weak enough that it could not generate enough force to detonate the cartridge. Not only would it have to strike the primer, but also have enough energy to actuate the cylinder. There have been examples of "semi automatic" revolvers such as the Webley-Fosbery, but that relied on a short recoil system to cock the hammer, as well as cam surfaces on the cylinder... all in all, a full auto SAA doesn't seem physically possible...

@@obviouspseudonym9345 The user had used +P ammunition (larger powder charge than usual), which the gun was not rated for.

@@Based-wn9jg Even so, people load hot rounds all the time, and usually it just damages or blows the gun apart. Do you have a source? This is quite an interesting story and I'd like to look into it further.

Was the barrel removable from the beginning of the gun's production? I think the first models had a firm barrel....

This is showing o-rings on some of the screws. I haver several clones and need to retighten screws after every range trip. Did original Colts have o-rings to keep screws from coming loose?
