I've been getting a few questions about this. You can do this upgrade on any year SC300 or SC400, but the donor brakes must be from a 95-00 LS400. The 90-94 LS400 brakes are smaller 2 piston calipers and will not be an upgrade for the SC.
Cloudburn yep the rears will stay stock for now, just with new rotors and aggressive pads. I need to look into a dual caliper setup to ditch the stock drum ebrake.
I'm buying a SC400 tomorrow. Its already been stripped on the inside, which after watching all of these episodes, I know how much work it took to strip it. I really think you deserve more subs, I also like that you show everything in your videos. Thank you for making this awesome videos!
Gertofius1 thanks for the comments! It's super fun stripping the interior at first, but once you realize how many things need to be removed and how long it takes it gets old fast. I like showing the entire process if I can so people know exactly what it takes to convert a street car into a dedicated track car. Also that way I can go back and see what things looked like before I screwed with them if I need to fix anything.
I drove 4 hours (each way) to look at it and the engine was running very poorly. Probably only half of the cylinders were working. The transmission also slammed into gear every time, jerking the car. But it got worse. Since it was stripped I was able to see the hole(s) in the floor that rust had eaten through. The seats in the car were RX8 seats which would be a redeeming factor for this turd except the adapter used to put them in was wooden planks and bolts. That was the most awful car that I have ever looked at. On a plus side, a buddy of mine who owns one had been scouting some out and a guy in our hometown was selling one to get money to get his truck back. I got it for pretty cheap and it came with a new, still in the box, set of coilovers. Not a bad end of the day.
Aww that sucks that you had to drive so much for nothing. But sounds like you got a good deal in the end. Congrats on the purchase, and welcome to the SC fold!
I have been looking for a clear / easy instructions for this swap since 1 year and couldn't find any till i stumbled across your video. Thank you so much!
this video is going to be a perfect reference video when I do this upgrade to my sc400!! thank you for your content! I look forward to watching your videos!
Glad to hear it! I think I covered all the steps, but leave a comment here if you have any issues with the install and I'll see if I can help. And thanks for the comments!
Thanks for the videos there the most detailed ones on SC400's on youtube. They really help me out cause I just bought a SC400 and the videos give me a feel of what I need to do and how to do it on my car.
id like to add on to this video • TO ANYONE WHO JUST DID THIS PLEASE READ• Do not bleed only the front calipers when you have done this i was busting my a** off and thought this was the correct way and i flushed the fronts two times and the pedal was still sinking on to the ground. FLUSH ALL CALIPERS starting from passenger rear then on to drivers rear then to passenger front and last drivers front. and for the love of god use blue or orange loctite to secure the caliper bolts before they fall off
The dust shield also functions as a heat shield keeping your hot ass brakes from roasting your bushings and struts, also if you get some brake ducts you have some where mount the outlets to. No reason you can't run without them, but they are not totally useless, just mostly.
and now to buy two sets of whichever caliper you can find that will fit a hydro brake rear kit for that car. Because drifting becomes significantly more straight-forward with a hydro brake handle for the rear so you can use it to initiate the break of rear wheel traction.
Porterfield can also make pads for you in the compounds they offer as well as Raybestos, PFC, and Hawk compounds.. You may have to send in pad measurements first if they don't have them already.
I tend to quite agree. ;) Also, buy your rotors online and they will be even cheaper! I managed to find a front set for $8.50 a piece last time I bought. There were even the Centric Premium with painted top hats and cooling vanes, which negates them ever sticking to the hub or wheel.
I will probably paint them later on. I'm more focused on getting the car mechanically together right now before I start worrying about what it looks like.
Thanks for the video! What is the minimum offset needed to clear the calipers? Found a great set of calipers at my local junkyard and working on giving them some fresh paint. Currently running on 18" but have tried the calipers and the wheel spokes wont clear the calipers. Not sure what my current offset is. Thanks
Thanks! I'm still not entirely comfortable in front of the camera, but that's getting better with every video. Hopefully I can move out of the build only phase and into the racing and build phase soon.
Obviously this comment is late, but for those buying calipers used, you should def buy a rebuild kit for the calipers. Replace the pistons, piston boots, the tension clips and all other hardware. It would suck to have the brakes installed, and then have them fail because of old or worn out hardware.
This is a really good point. I assume everyone would at least inspect the brakes they pick up for wear and tear. My brakes were in excellent shape thankfully, but this is definitely a good thing to keep in mind.
Thanks man. Doing the videos is definitely a labor of love. It takes a ton of time, especially when filming everything in a DIY style. Future videos will be a lot less build heavy (except for the roll cage) and a lot more driving and racing. Thanks for saying hi.
@@FullySpooled I honestly was going to message you about roll cage. So I have never drifted or tracked a car. It's all I have ever wanted to do. I plan to do a roll cage, but for now ordered a harness brace for my harness belts. I'm guessing you will be doing a video on cage install. My other question was if you needed it to go to track and does it need to be certified or any special style. Thanks
@@petescarport Be careful using a harness without a proper roll bar. If you're just using a brace and roll the car, the harness won't let you duck and you'll have a flattened head. That's why I kept the stock seat belts until I build the cage. As for certifications, I will be following the Formula Drift rulebook since that is the highest level of drifting with the most amount of requirements. I suggest finding the highest level of whatever racing you want to be doing and following their guidelines. (NHRA for drag racing, Formula Drift for drifting, etc)
@@FullySpooled wow I hadn't heard that one. Only thing I found bad was installing harness without bar and submerening. I do plan to put roll cage in before heavy drifting and I'm thinking I can put roll cage with harness bar.
William Lundy the stock rear brakes on the SC are actually pretty good as far as rear brakes go, so I'm going to keep the stock ones for now and possibly upgrade them later to the Supra Turbo brakes if needed. I also need to figure out what to do about the handbrake situation since the stock handbrake won't work for drifting. That'll be a future episode. I'm sticking with the Evo Enkei wheels for now since I'm on a super tight budget.
Cloudburn yep! It'll get wide fiberglass fenders, hood, bumpers, new paint, etc once the mechanical stuff gets sorted. Performance first, cosmetics a close second.
So does this work with all SCs because I have a '93 Sc400 and am considering doing the same with my brakes but you mentioned the 4 piston brakes needed to come from a '95-2000 ls400. Would this work for my '93? Thanks for any answers and nice videos keep it up!
Parker Sperry yes, all SCs of any year can upgrade to these brakes. You just need to make sure the calipers you buy are from a 95-00 LS400 because earlier year LS400s have smaller 2 piston calipers that aren't an upgrade for the SC.
I did the Tundra Brake Upgrade on my 2002 4Runner so.... I have a 1994 SC300 and I want to do this upgrade also. My question is can I use the 17" GS 400/430 OEM wheels with no clearance issue?
Are you going to turbocharge the 4.8 prior to install? How about instrument panel, might be easier to use a panel out of same year truck? No adapters or workarounds. Also, if I upgrade to the Gen 2 LS400 front brakes, will they allow the stock wheels to fit, or will I have to get wider wheels to clear like you?
Nope, not turbocharging the 4.8 yet. I want to get the engine in and running first before I start introducing even more complexity. It'll help narrow down any issues with the install. I also want to start drifting and racing the car on lower power levels before upping it with boost. Also I'll need to crack the engine open to modify the piston rings and change out the stock con rod bolts for ARP, among other things, so that will all happen later on. I'm going to be using aftermarket gauges instead of a full stock instrument panel. I really just need a tach and maybe speedo behind the steering wheel for racing. Everything else will be mounted in the center console. The LS400 brakes will not let you use stock wheels. You'll need to get bigger wheels for sure. I tried making the stock SC wheels fit in the video and the spokes hit the caliper. I'd suggest 17" wheels minimum with either a higher offset or wheels spacers.
I didn't do anything to the rear brakes other than install higher quality pads since rear brakes don't do a ton of work compared to the front. But you can install Supra MKIV rear brakes if you can find them. They will be a nice upgrade over stock.
I'm going to weld the spider gears on the stock diff for now. Later on I'll likely swap to the SC300 rear end for the 4.27 ratio and install a proper 2 way LSD. For the driveshaft I'm using an F-body one piece. You can actually check that out here: ruclips.net/video/r4y6L71J0j8/видео.html Next episode will have the new driveshaft going in.
I got a SC300 and the owner before me put on a big brakes from LS400 (I believe) so I needed spacers and when I put the spacers on now the tires is rubbing the side fender. You got any suggestions of what I should do? My tires sizes are 225/45/18 and I put a 1” spacer on.
Are you using stock wheels? How much space do you have between the brake caliper and the inside of the wheel spokes? You only need 1/8" to 1/4" of space there for them to clear. I would suggest getting aftermarket wheels if you can. My 17x8 +35 wheels off an Evo 8 cleared the brakes and did not rub. Otherwise you might want to get smaller spacers to reduce how much they stick out from the hub.
From what I've seen the replacement parts aren't any more expensive than other cars of the same vintage. The luxury car tax on parts tends to fade as cars get older. Granted I immediately pulled out the engine and transmission, so those are probably going to have the most expensive parts to replace. Performance parts for the SC are largely on par with other popular platforms from what I can tell. (Except for S13 240s, which has a lot of cheaper performance parts just because there is so much competition between aftermarket companies).
