    This year, 2020, during the “pandemic”, in California, I found my pedigreed breeders on CL, the male was $40 and the female was $50. They came from separate breeders, who I think were into rabbit shows and the state fair. I got them early during all this, in anticipation of any food shortages...now can’t even find a rabbit on CL... I got very good quality rabbits with pedigrees and tattoos, around here people want the pedigree, it means quality. If I sell a bunny in the future, I probably won’t sell at pedigreed price, but I’ll give folks the option, some will want it, some won’t.

    Thanks for great content. It’s good to hear the ‘voice of reason’. There are so many people advertising their rabbits as ‘litter trained’ and ‘house trained’…. Any reasonable person knows that a rabbit is a complete lack of digression in front and a total lack of responsibility at the other. They are wonderful pets. They can even be medically recognized as ‘comfort companions’ but we should stress health, comfort and nourishing for food but not to try to sell what doesn’t really exist. Buying from a knowledgeable person who has an honest opinion of their product is the best you can hope for.

    In our area there are monthly animal swaps where you can buy directly from the kids who raise them for 4-H and others that raise all kinds of animals. We even found a small rabbit breeder and was able to pick her brain. Its also a great way to build community. We are looking into getting goats and there is a lady there who has been raising them since she was a kid and we talk to her often. There is a relationship there and i will absolutely buy my goats from her.

    I am really impressed with your video!
    So many “HomeSteaders” I have watched videos from do not have a clue about the livestock they are raising and expect a pat on the back just because they own an animal that can chew it’s cud and produce manure....
    I really was impressed about your mention of County Fairs, 4-H, and FFA Programs as a source of locating breeding stock. I was raised in 4-H and FFA and when I have mentioned these programs to HomeSteaders I have been met with resistance. High School FFA teachers and County Ag Extension Offices can refer ppl desiring to increase their livestock herd sizes. They also have their programs which normally have a minimum of good literature even if the project leader is not real experienced. As a 4-Her I served at the state fair, showed livestock at 7 or 8 Fairs and Livestock Shows which provided me with a lot of contacts to source new stock from. If I was to add anything to your presentation would to tell folks to not in-breed their rabbits. Try to Get their males and females from different breed lines, even different breeders. Continued breeding of brothers and sisters produces offspring with defects that affects meat production.
    Another thing that impressed me about you is you are very knowledgeable about choosing the correct breeds of rabbits for meat production! I’ve seen too many “homesteaders” getting any old breed of rabbit... the furrier the better. I’m not sure if there are any HERITAGE breeds of rabbits. So many ppl claiming to being “homesteaders” listen to these “EXPERTS” selling various old fashion out of style breeds of livestock which are not good investments at all. All Heritage means is HIGH PRICE = high profits for the breeders!
    Keep up the good work sharing good info!!!

    Hi Sarah. We have around 75 breeding does and 10 bucks. Some advice I would recommend. When you do locate a rabbit grower ask a few questions prior to making a wasted trip. Can't say the truth will be told but after a couple of questions you'll find out real fast.
    1. How long have you been breeding rabbits?
    2. What breeds do you have? Purebred or hybrid?
    3. Will I be able to tour your rabbitry?
    4. Do you have good documentation on the rabbit?
    5. Is the doe and buck on site?
    6. How many were in the liter they were in and how many died.
    7. How many liters has the doe raised?
    Along with all of your advice you have a pretty good chance of receiving a good rabbit. Rabbits don't have to be papered to be great rabbits, they just need a lot of love. Thanks for your time.
    Billy at Far-Mar Acres.

    Another idea for where to get them is the local Amish community....I live in Northern Central Missouri and super close to a large community that offers a plethora of livestock....I have established several "friendships" and each offer a variety of goods.. Search for animal or produce auctions to get aquanted with individuals as well...

    We found that New Zealand red, and Black Satin were a great mix. The satins are small but have excellent sweet meat. The does were excellent mothers. The Red NZ were larger bodied and also excellent meat. Combined, we averaged 6-8 kits, medium to large size per litter but man did they taste good. One NZ Red buck, 2-3 Black Satin does kept a family of 4 fed, with babies to sell as well. I’m considering starting up with them again but probably next year. And ours LOVED eating the bark off mulberry twigs or other fruit trees. And comfrey! They went nuts for comfrey!

    I took some one word I was buying two does and a buck. I wasn't at thier home I asked a lady if she had some she says yes . She called her husband he brought them to job I paid him. Put them card board boxes he had them separate two and one so good sign I didn't question him except age . He said they were year old never been bread. They were beautiful black New Zealands look really good no mites or canker ear little over weight tho . But healthy looking as I ever seen. I got the three for thirty bucks. Happy with my purchase got home looked each one buck. I wasn't disatisfied little disappointed tho because I thought my search was over. I'm bad about if I want something I never slow the search till I achieve what I'm after . So now I got to choose my buck out of the three plus still insearch of a doe. It's middle of winter I have know idea where to get couple of doe's. And I don't want get rid of the bucks till I got a proven buck. Plus I was wanting to be ready for spring littlers . I can't understand why they can't be ship like standard shipping like chickens. I've got to build pens for my rabbits. I hate winter . I bought my homestead 7 months ago I've been working every sense. I'm not no spring chicken 63 years old rooster. I've got my chicken flock well started coop built. Just started getting eggs. I'm also getting three ducks for eggs got one as of now. And I think I got a Susie. Couple months old maybe when I got it still had down. She started feathering out her wings wouldn't fold up. I looked it up she has angle wing syndrome. It not something unhealthy just awkward looking. She looks like a plane on the runway. But I might be able to correct it. I'm giving it a shot splints but I'm useing duck tape I new they called it duck tape for reason now I know. I let her feathers get long enough folded her wings in place kinda of tape the feathers together tips no skin contact. You can tell she's more content she's not constantly trying to adjust her feathers in place. It may correct it I'm gonna keep an eye on her make sure it doesn't create a bigger problem. She seems more at peace now. Nothing is ever easy for me. Thiers aways something new to learn. I've had rabbits before I got pretty good knowledge rasing them. But I just can't read people good I always give them the benefit of the dout. I told them what I wanted on the rabbits the thing is I'm deaf.i plainly ask two does and a buck she shook her head yes.ok bring them. Well in 63 years I haven't met 15 honest people. You just have to figure the facts. Number one Cost , number two possible loss, and number three can I live with it. If you use thoes three scenarios. You will be ok. Now took me along time to really come to terms with those facts. You see in this world you have to use thoes every day of your life. I don't know parents just came seem to make things simple for us. You see the word trust it doesn't define every day life just people in general. Some times in business even if you don't trust them you still have to deal with them. We dam sure gonna make mistakes. But can we live with it. I hope someone else can use that tool .

    Another great video, Sarah! I have a few questions I was hoping you could answer. I was wondering if your breeders are hybrids? I've heard heard that hybrids, sometimes, don't make the best mothers and was wondering what your experience was. Also, now that your rabbitry is pretty well established, do you bring in outside breeding stock when you need to refresh your herd or pull from your existing litters. How long do you typically keep a doe in your breeding program? I only ask because our two original does are almost 3 yrs. old now and I noticed their last litters were smaller than previous litters. We aren't particularly aggressive in our breeding timeline (off the top of my head I think this was their fourth litters), so I was hoping to get a few more litters from them before retiring them. Finally, I would love to see a video of you clipping their toe nails. Of all the rabbit related chores I have, that's the one area I struggle the most with. It's always nice to see someone else's technique.

      You'll have to wait and see. 🤗 I actually don't palpate their abdomens because it can harm the babies. I just wait. Sometimes if they have a belly full of babies, you can start seeing her develop a bigger belly that can been noticed when she stands straight up. You could hold a treat up above her to look. 😊

    Californian does tend to produce more milk than New Zealand does. If you're going to cross those breeds and butcher their offspring, I recommend using New Zealand bucks and Californian does to get a faster growth rate between kindling and weaning.

I don't know why they are doing. when the first one died it was between a box i had in there and i wondered if it could not get out. the second one died it had rained and I wondered if some rain blew in and got it wet. then another died and i wondered if it was because I accidentally got it wet. then another on died and i have no idea why . coould these be reasons> also the man who built my cage put a floor in it and i dont likke that because there is no air flow and it gets to dirty to fast . I dont know if that could be the reason.

    Around here the best rabbits are mutts. The meat stock has been so in bred their off spring is messed up. The nz cal crosses are good. But those are in bred too much too.

    I know y’all raise them for meat but I just can’t see how y’all can kill a little cute bunny. I love watching y’all and do understand why y’all do what y’all do. God bless y’all for doing what y’all do.

    If I am breeding and have a kit, intending on processing at week 11-12, do I need to worry about separating the bucks and does in the kit before hand?

    • @LivingTraditionsHomestead
      @LivingTraditionsHomestead  4 года назад

      We do not as long as they are being processed by that age. If you are going to keep them longer you should.

    Hey Sara(h) and everyone in the comments!!
    I was wondering if you ever use hay cubes?
    I was wondering because we live in the city and I dont drive. I havent been able to get hay delivered the past little while so I got some cubes from TSC. The cost seems outrageous at $18 for a 50lb bag and its a Timothy/Alfalfa mix. Our rabbits are adult breeders with brand new litters. Do you think these cubes are a good choice? Worth the cost?? Any opinions?
    I will say I love how easy it is to feed/ store and the low waste!!!! Also the rabbits seem to really love them.

      @LivingTraditionsHomestead  6 лет назад +1

      Cubes are totally fine. As long as you are feeding rabbit pellets (I recommend 17% protein), you really can use the cubes as a supplement. I don't feed hay all of the time.

    • @CanadianFarmGirl1
      @CanadianFarmGirl1 6 лет назад

      Living Traditions Homestead yeah we feed free choice pellets and cubes right now till our grass gets going and we are able to get them out in the tractors.
      How much pellets do you feed?

    • @LivingTraditionsHomestead
      @LivingTraditionsHomestead  6 лет назад +1

      Because my does are bred intensively, I let them free feed on whatever they need.

    This was really helpful! I did have another question about selling rabbit meat. Do you guys just sell it through farmers market or just to individual friends or...? And do you have to have it processed through a federally inspected butcher? And lastly, how do you decide what to sell it for?

      Each state has different regulations that you will need to figure out. We aren't able to give "legal" advice about what is ok in each state. I would start with your state Dept. of Agriculture. As far as price, again this can vary ALOT by state. Here is a video we did that helps you figure out what it costs to raise them. ruclips.net/video/h-Y-DS1IRy0/видео.html

      OK, I asked too soon! Your rabbit tractor build came up as a suggested video on your episode about combining litters in a rabbit tractor. Checking that one out next! Thanks a million, guys!

      The flavor is very much like chicken, but a bit more chewy. Rabbits are all white meat and I honestly can get filled up on just a back leg or 1/3 of a back. Delicious!
