She is so underrated as a guitarist, and she's understated: she doesn't bother making the most of her skills all the time, so it's expressive rather then excessive. Her vocals and guitar are two wild rivers. And you can tell her audience was her therapist during this period.
This is from her debut album. She's said in interviews that she didn't think she'd get a second album, so she put everything into this one. This song is absolutely genius, playing with the 3/2 rhythm in almost every iteration, using pedal tones to build to an absolute frenzy. She should be recognized for the rock god she is.
Can't believe how unbelievably brilliant this still sounds and how much it still resonates! She still knocks all competition into a cocked hat! Pun intended.... Superb.
I hate that, whenever I'm minding my own business doing anything (like cooking or cleaning), out of the blue I'll start chanting "IF YOU PUT IT ON, IF YOU PUT IT OOOON", like some sort of weird reflex
Lyrics: Put on that dress I'm going out dancing Starting off red Clean and sparkling, he'll see me Music playing, make it dreamy for dancing Must be a way that I can dress to please him It's hard to walk in the dress, it's not easy I'm spilling over like a heavy loaded fruit tree If you put it on (x4) It's sad to see Lonely, all this lonely Close up my eyes Dreamy, dreamy music make it be alright Music play, make it good for romancing Must be a way I can dress to please him Swing and sway, everything'll alright But it's feeling so damn tight tonight If you put it on (x4) "You, purdy thang, " my man says "But I bought you beautiful dresses" "You, purdy thang, " my man says "But I bought you beautiful dresses" Filthy tight, the dress is filthy I'm falling flat and my arms are empty Clear the way, better get it out of this room A falling woman in dancing costume If you put it on (x8)
PJ Harvey Dress is fun to sing and perform/ rock out to! My cover band rocked it back in 1996! @ So is Here and Now by Letters to Cleo - @, also my cover with an older 90s alt rock band I was in
The best music videos are the ones where it looks like the budget was about 100$ That way the artist is forced to think, to attract attention of as many passbyers as possible. Therefore these mvs are the most creative ones
Omg its 2024 I ' m drunk and this song STILL resonates and says something about mens ideas about relationships. . I will never ever have a hetero relationtionship again
It's in 4/4. In the verses, the snare/ guitar are punching 'dotted 1/4 notes', which take 3 bars to resolve (so a 2/3 poly-rhythm). The 'tambourine' remains on the 'offbeat' throughout. The intro is 8 bars, so when the first chorus starts, the snare lands on the '2'. The verse is 16 bars, so when the chorus starts, the snare/ guitar land on '1' with the 'crash', then it switches to straight backbeats. I guess it's a form of syncopation?
Ya Know Polly Jean , Living here in Appalachia it seam around every cruve in the road . There lays another cross road in frount of ya ! . Polly Dont ever let any body ever tell ya different ! no body ! Kisses Polly Jean From your feeling spent fan ! Fg lol
I love this song. It reminds me of bench pressing backflipping cartwheeling multicoloured lesbian lollypop ladies made of light dancing in the night with an infinity of psychiatrists they make babies out of and turn babies into that look like me and you except have a propensity to invent the Teacup Exploding Breast Machine. Women are flowers - some tulips, some daffodils, some rhododendrons, some roses, some poison ivy, some Venus fly traps. Men are just trees that f*ck. But this song is a cherry tree with many fruit and flowers and it plays guitar as well as f*cks. What's not to like?
Gez ... There is not one ounce of originality here. I hear a young lady who is imitating many many that came before her that had an original sound. I do not get what the big deal is. I guess that's why she never made it to America because we would see her as she is rip off

This song is one of the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame's 660 "Songs That Shaped Rock And Roll."
This song is flawless. Put on some headphones and let it envelop you. I fight to keep up with every note but I'm left breathless every time.

Not gonna lie, I spent most of the 90s getting people to listen to PJ Harvey.
Doing it now
My whole life since I learned about her on the Batman forever soundtrack in 5th grade 🥰 I’m glad there’s others

Lyrics:
Put on that dress
I'm going out dancing
Starting off red
Clean and sparkling, he'll see me
Music playing, make it dreamy for dancing
Must be a way that I can dress to please him
It's hard to walk in the dress, it's not easy
I'm spilling over like a heavy loaded fruit tree
If you put it on (x4)
It's sad to see
Lonely, all this lonely
Close up my eyes
Dreamy, dreamy music make it be alright
Music play, make it good for romancing
Must be a way I can dress to please him
Swing and sway, everything'll alright
But it's feeling so damn tight tonight
If you put it on (x4)
"You, purdy thang, " my man says
"But I bought you beautiful dresses"
"You, purdy thang, " my man says
"But I bought you beautiful dresses"
Filthy tight, the dress is filthy
I'm falling flat and my arms are empty
Clear the way, better get it out of this room
A falling woman in dancing costume
If you put it on (x8)

She's the premier female vocalist of that era. Everyone else is a derivative
Only a person whose worn a dress, knows how she feels. 😳
Surely depends on the dress ?
@@markewings7525 😆🤣😅😂🤣😅
😂
Your dad gets it.
@@thomas79marshall I'd like to assume you liked your own comment

Literally, the only good one she has, but it's a masterpiece.
White chalk?
The demo was better

Hahahahha
Well, to be fair, this is from her debut album. Many artists develop their own sound with their subsequent records.
Who do you think she is imitating? They might be worth a listen. Thanks
